As I talk with more people who expect their kid will play club hockey in college, I’m finding there are a lot of misconceptions and overall lack of knowledge. With tryouts around the corner, we are trying to make a decision if we should stay or go. I am sure this topic will produce many responses of differing opinions, but we need some guidance from families that may have experienced this in the past. Most of our friends that coach older age groups think we need to move on if the coaching isn't going to change for next season. Its not a personality issue the coaches are great guys off the ice, but more so, what seems to be coaching knowledge/experience and a group of dads running the bench. I know, we'll likely deal with dad coaches (which I have nothing against if they're doing it right) anywhere we go except for maybe AAA, wh…

Lets hear it. Seasons are over for some and some are finishing up. Everyone has a voice and who is getting their moneys worth? Too many teams have these hidden costs or additions at the end of the year. How much did you end up paying for your team last year? Travel included? Was it worth it? Mind sharing team/organization?

I heard Pittsburgh Hornets youth hockey is coming back for Bantam and above. Has anyone heard any details on this?

Mike Lange's voice and game/goal calls for the Pittsburgh Penguins have spanned decades in the Pittsburgh area. Listening to him call all those games over the years was instrumental in growing hockey in Pittsburgh. I know it is one of the reasons I fell in love with the game, and I'm sure a lot of the people on this forum as well. Rest in Peace Legend.

Larry Koch passed away on Thursday 1/23/25 at the age of 92. Some of you will remember him from coaching high school hockey for Bishop Canevin, South Park and North Catholic. You may also know his sons, Jim and Bob, who are also involved in western PA hockey. Larry was a great promoter of the sport and one of the first in the area to start learn to play programs. He used to run them at the South Park ice rink back in the late 1970's. I know a lot of people that got introduced to hockey because of his learn to play. My sympathies to the Koch family. Larry was truly a special person. May he rest in peace.

My son is a 2016 Birth Year who will be moving up to squirts next season. He is in his second full year of hockey and is currently playing at the red level in mites. This season he made a transition to goalie about 80% of the time between his two teams. One team he is the only goalie and the other team has a 2017 part time goalie as well as a couple other kids who will try it periodically. He enjoys playing both positions but he does not want to commit to being a full time goalie or full time skater. My question is at the PAHL Travel level, is it unheard of having a goalie skate out if there is two goalies? I am new to hockey in general and we got our feet wet this season…

If I remember correctly, this is the first team to win a PA state championship. They are being inducted into the Baldwin Athletics Hall of Fame this evening. I think that Jim Cox is the only person to win a PA state championship as a player and then coach his alma mater to a state championship (Baldwin 1988 team).

Second time I've tried to watch a PIHL game and there is no sound at the Spencer YMCA. It gives me a message that it was turned off. I went back and tried some random practices and they were muted too. What is going on? That makes it a pretty miserable experience to try to watch a game.
