This is so wrong. He's a really good coach with an outstanding resume and he was dismissed because certain people on the board want to go in a different direction. The word is they want to find someone with a military background. Not sure if the last part is true or not. I wish John well. Just one of the perils of coahing HS hockey. You're at the mercy of the board instead of an athletic director.

Oh, if only that were true everywhere.

  2. PAHL, IMHO is a classic pyramid scheme in that the bulk of the money is paid by the lowest age group. The Squirt parent that is brand new to travel hockey and doesn’t know anything about the organization or the league, their kid made a team and they start writing checks. By the time Mom and Dad start to figure things out and ask questions, their kid is older and probably a year away from HS and we all know that is where the drop off starts. PAHL administration know that there is an endless supply of folk that will give them 4-6 years of money, nobody is doing anything to challenge them or propose a viable alternative so why should they change?

I am old enough to remember when there weren't any 'elite' youth athletes and no one worried about 'development'. You just played. Focus was on exercise and fun. If you liked whatever the sport was, you worked on it on your own. So, yeah. I know, I am old.

    Same here @Saucey, same here….

Well, I see you're at least able to write a paragraph without misspelling anything or making 30 grammatical errors. You're tribe probably thinks of you as a modern-day Albert Einstein.

I don’t profess to be a member of any “ tribe”, but there is a grammatical error in your post.

Private / Catholic schools are not bound by zip code residency restrictions public schools have.  Take a look at St. Joseph's in Philly for football - most kids on that team come from all over the country.

Again, don’t mean to piss anyone off. Just don’t know so I’ll ask.

Are the rules different for hockey since PIHL is its own entity or do hockey programs do basically the same thing?

I saw a few of the games from this tournament. I'm pretty sure FR middle school had 2nd year 12u players on their team as well. Now, that could be the reason they chose to play down in A rather than AA. Like the poster said above, school teams usually have a wide range of talent and they played down to obviously have a better chance for success. Honestly, the bigger can of worms here is why are 12u non checking players allowed to play "up" in a 14u checking tournament? Seems to me that USA hockey would probably not approve... but hey, it's youth hockey though, and everyone just pretty much does whatever they want anyways. Rules are more like guidelines.

Would be real ironic if your "nephew" played on the Average Joe's team that took the check from behind from the game I saw. Considering I just saw a kid from that team clip a kid in the head in Baierl's summer non-checking league. Not saying that the check from behind wasn't suspect because it was, but make sure your team is filled with angels before you start tossing rocks.

When my player was second year 12u he played on a spring tournament team in the 14u division. The organization he played for did that every spring.

That's the silliest thing I've heard all day. Who pays for these teams to play, and for the rinks to be open? It sure isn't the schools.

A better idea would be having (competent) security at the games. I'm sure the schools have no problem paying for that at their football games.

Seems that isn’t quite the same. Security or local law enforcement usually are happy to be at the football field on Friday nights for a game. The entire community shows up.

Not to much when it is a 9:50 puck drop in January and it’s snowing.

The point is taken, but different dynamic.
