Team Story - Program Development and History

The Meadville Hockey Program played in the Lake Shore Hockey League beginning in the 1979-80 Season. The Bulldogs won three Pennsylvania State Championships in 1987 over Council Rock in Class AA, in 1989 over William Tennent 4-0 and in 1992 over Monsignor Bonner 9-3. This Meadville team will go down as one of the most dominant High School Teams in State History as they won the Lake Shore League with a perfect 10-0-0 record and posted a 38-7-1 record entering the Penguins Cup Playoffs lead by three 50 goal scorers in Ryan Smart, Tommy Westfall and Scott Phillis. The Bulldogs flexed their muscles in the West Pennsylvania playoffs beating North Allegheny 18-2, Shaler 10-1 and then defeated Bethel Park 7-1 in the Penguins Cup Final.

Monsignor Bonner competing out of the Eastern High School Hockey League, won their first Flyers Cup Championship in 1991 and then won the 1991 Pennsylvania A Title defeating State College 5-2. In 1992, Bonner won the AAA Flyers Cup beating William Tennent 3-1 and 6-1 and then lost to Meadville in the Pennsylvania Final. In the 1993 Flyers Cup AAA, the Friars continued their dominance defeating West Chester East 8-3 and Downingtown 4-1 to earn a spot in their 3rd straight Eastern Championship against Germantown Academy. Bonner defeated GA 5-1 and 3-2 to earn a second consecutive berth against Meadville in the Pennsylvania  State Championship.

Road to a Pennsylvania High School Hockey Championship

In the Pennsylvania Final before an overflow crowd at Haverford Skatium over 200 patrons Monsignor Bonner battled through a scoreless first period to a 1-1 game as the teams traded goals in the second period. Meadville goaltender Jim Brunner played a string game in between the pipes to keep the Friars from gaining an advantage. The Bulldogs took the lead for good as Tom Westfall scored 1:11 into the 3rd period to give his team the lead 2-1. Scott Phillis took a Ryan Smart pass and beat goaltender Jim Bauer to make it 3-1 with a little over 9 minutes to play. Marc Johnson and Jason Guerrierri add goals in the final five minutes of play to give Meadville and coach Jamie Plunkett their 4th Pennsylvania State Championship in 6 years with a 5-1 victory.

Meadville, the 7-time Pennsylvania Champions and Penguins Cup Champions were still finding their way as a program in 2003 in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League in the footsteps of 4-time Pennsylvania Champions Bethel Park, who captured the title in 2000, 2001 and 2002. The Bulldogs had an 18-3-3 Regular Season in the PIHL and continued its programs success outside of the League with excellent competition in New York and Ohio including winning the Bulldog Invitational earlier in January. Coach Jamie Plunkett entered his 17th season in Meadville and his Bulldogs were licking their chops to redeem the 1999 triple overtime loss to Conwell Egan at Grundy and capture their first State Title since 1996 in Johnstown, a 3-2 victory over LaSalle.

The Road to a Pennsylvania High School Hockey Championship

The Bulldogs made it to the Penguins Cup with relative ease defeating their opponents the first three game including North Hills, Plum and arch-rival Central Catholic by a total of 16-3 and jumped all over Franklin Regional in the Penguins Cup for an impressive 8-3 win capturing their 9th Western crown. As usual a large contingent of Meadville faithful were standing the entire game with chants of Let’s go Dawgs.

Malvern Prep used the huge crowd of 1600 at Ice Line to their advantage as Mike Curran and Chris Campanale scored in the opening period to give the Friars a 2-0 lead. The Bulldog’s DJ Durkee cut the lead to 2-1 beating Malvern’s Mark Cetola. This State Final would go back and forth Campanale scored his 2nd goal of the game in the middle of the 2nd period to give Malvern a 3-2 lead. Christian Nickerson converted a Phil Siverd feed on the power play to cut the lead to 3-2 and then the Friars Justin Martin scored on a breakaway to make the count 4-2. Justin Wehrle scored a huge goal late in the 2nd period to go to the ice cut 4-3.

The Bulldogs would rally in the 3rd period behind great goaltending of Danny O’Sharuk and Chris Claspy scored on the power play with 4:41 to play and then Christian Nickerson scored his 2nd goal with exactly three minutes remaining to give the Meadville Bulldogs a heartstopping 5-4 victory and their unprecedented 8th Pennsylvania Title

Team Story - Program Development and History
North Allegheny started their season in style capturing the pre-season St Margaret's Fall Face Off and in Mid Season took home the Director's Cup for thePA Hockey Scholastic Showcase and looked to have an edge on the Penguins Cup field in Class AAA. To believe the Tigers were a contender for the Penguins Cup got a little jolt with a late season loss to Shaler and then a final game loss to nemesis Bethel Park.
So this journey began with Canon McMillan, who defeated the Tigers early in the season. NA dodged a bullet in overtime as a breakaway and a penalty shot did not spell paydirt for the Big Macs and Cody Black's OT goal kept NA alive. In the Semis, Bethel scored a power play goal top take the lead 2-1 and Joe Griffin's shorthanded tally turned the tables and the Tigers moved on to the Penguins Cup. In the Penguins Cup Final against Peters Twp, who had also beaten the Tigers, a 0-0 deadlock was decided as Joe Griffin got his stick on a puck and the North Allegheny Tigers seized the Penguin Cup with a 2-0 victory a little prior to midnight. Cinderella has a slipper and coach Jimmy Black has danced in 2006 with Pine Richland and again in 2007 with North Allegheny for their only State Championship.
The Tigers have not met a team the caliber of defending State Champions LaSalle and the Explorers are primed to win their 5th State Championship tying Bethel Park and Bishop McCort with Pennsylvania titles. Coach Wally Muehlbronner's team has gone virtually unchallenged in the Flyers Cup except a tie against Holy Ghost Prep. The Explorers compliment of Non-League games is always a barometer the LaSalle is prepared for the State Championship and defeating Rhode Island giant Mt St Charles is a nice win for the program in 2013. The Explorers are Flyers Cup AAA champions five of the past six years for a reason and that's because they have a program built to win Pennsylvania High School Hockey's ultimate prize.
The Road to a Pennsylvania High School Hockey Championship Class AAA - North Allegheny Tigers 6 LaSalle Explorers 2
LaSalle built a 2-0 lead in the first period outshooting NA 12-6. The Tigers responded in the 2nd period with a natural hat trick by Joe Griffin to take a 3-2 lead. In the 3rd period, Joe Griffin set up Dominic Zangaro to make it 4-2. North Allegheny Goaltender Bradford Thornburgh stops 34 of 36 shots for the Tigers in goal and Matt Fantaski and Griffin added empty net goals to make the final 6-2 and give NA their 2nd Pennsylvania AAA Title and first since 2007

Thomas Jefferson began play in the old South Penn League in the 1980-81 season and made it all the way to the Pennsylvania Final in Class AA before losing a 4-3 Heartbreaker to Erie Fairview. The Jaguars won the South Hills Interscholastic Hockey League regular season title in the 1997-1998 season after knocking on the door during the 1990’s every year. In the Penguins Cup playoffs, Don Powell and TJ faced a strong Class AA Field edging 1997 Finalists Fox Chapel 7-6 and 2 time Pennsylvania Champions Greensburg CC 8-5 to advance to the Penguins Cup for the first time since 1981. In the Penguins Cup Final at Rostraver Ice Garden, Thomas Jefferson spotted Peters Township a 1-0 lead and rallied on goals by Brian Hartman, Pat Kenny and Chuck Fink to defeat Peters Township 3-1 and to win its first Penguins Cup in school history.
Unionville was a member of the Inter-County Scholastic Hockey League with limited success in the Flyers Cup Tournament losing in 1993 to Pennsbury of the Lower Bucks League. In the 1995 Flyers Cup, the Indians defeated Neshaminy 6-0 to capture their first ever Flyers Cup and then went on to its first Pennsylvania Final and was defeated by Bishop McCort 9-1. In the 1998 Flyers Cup playoffs, Unionville beat Palmyra 10-5 and Ridley 7-1 to earn the Flyers Cup Final and then defeated Archbishop Ryan 5-4 to win their 2nd Flyers Cup.
The Road to a Pennsylvania High School Hockey Championship
In the Pennsylvania Final, Thomas Jefferson struck first on the power play as Chuck Fink scored at 7:18. Michael Roth extended the Jaguars lead to 2-0 with another goal with 3:22 to go in the opening period. Unionville rallied in the 2nd period, finally breaking through on Matt Mitchell as Charlie Gerbron scored at 5:16 to cut the TJ lead to 2-1. This State Championship took a different turn in the 3rd period as Thomas Jefferson would score five times as Chuck Fink scored twice to complete the hat trick and Pat Kenny added a pair of goals as the Jaguars outshot Unionville 13-6 and held off the Indians who scored four times to make the final count 7-5 in favor of Thomas Jefferson and Thomas Jefferson won their 1st Pennsylvania AA Championship .

Team Story - Program Development and History

Peters Twp went through the regular season 18-2-0 to capture the # 1 seed in the Penguins Cup. The Indians smashed Hampton 9-2 and Greensburg CC 8-0 to reach the Penguins Cup against Kittanning. In the finals, Peters struck early and often to defeat the Wildcats 6-3 to capture their 2nd straight Penguins Cup, The defending State Champions would play Holy Ghost Prep who won their 1st Flyers Cup defeating Freedom [LVIHL], Archbishop Wood [SHSHL] and Abington [SHSHL].

The Road to a Pennsylvania High School Hockey Championship

In the first period The Indians pounded Holy Ghost for a 14-4 shot advantage on goaltender Dave Monteith in the 1st with a balanced attack and broke open the game early with four goals from Matt Clackson [8:02], Mike Papciak [7:23], Matt Schwartz [2:56] and Brandon Rubeo [2:22] for a 4-0 lead at the end of one.

In the second and Peters continued its onslaught as Matt Schwartz and Mike Sherer scored to spur Peters Twp to a 6-0 lead. Holy Ghost finally took advantage as Ryan Gunderson [2:54] and Paul Worthington [1:02] took advantage of the Firebirds power plays and cut the lead to 6-2. The prettiest goal of the game came as the Peters line of Christian Minella, Matt Schwartz and Matt Clackson would put an end to it with one of the prettiest passing sequences and a great backdoor finish by Minella with 33 seconds to put the Indians on top 7-2 after two periods.

The third period was pretty much academic as Peters added two more goals by Minella and Kevin Kustron and HGP’s Worthington added a tally at 11:21 to make the final outcome 9-3 and a second straight Pennsylvania Class AA Championship. Kyle Kittleberger stopped several Firebird chances with some spectacular goaltending throughout stopping 23 shots. The win by Peters Twp put this team in the company of the best Class AA teams who have ever captured the Pennsylvania State Class AA Championship and opened a debate that this may be the best team in the state at any level. HGP Head Coach Brian Tibbels called Peters “better than any AAA teams in the state”.

Conestoga (21-5-1) coach Mike Graves led the Pioneers through the 2008 Flyers Cup field with some real nailbitters over Methacton 5-4, Central Bucks South 1-0 and then a triple overtime thriller over Pennridge 3-2 with a Vince Masciantonio goal to end a classic Flyers Cup AA final.

Latrobe’s (22-3-0) Head Coach Ron Makoski, established  a goal prior to the season that this group of talented players could mold as a team and after the Wildcats defeated West Allegheny 3-2 in overtime and then Franklin Regional 3-2 in overtime to wins its first ever Penguins Cup.

So before a great turnout of Latrobe Wildcat faithful, who ventured over the mountain on route 271 and some pretty boisterous Conestoga fans the crowd of an estimated 1300 watched the battle for supremacy in Class AA begin between the Pioneers and Wildcats. The opening period was scoreless.

Latrobe struck early in the 2nd period as JeffJoe Regula dangled the puck and fed Alex Stahl on the doorstep who jammed the puck past Mazda wot give the Cats a 1-0 lead at 13:25. Latrobe’s Zack LaDuke got his own rebound of the loose puck and scored to make it 2-0 Wildcats at 8:38. The Pioneers finally hit paydirt with 1:06 to go in the second as the Masciantonio brothers set up a nice give and go as Loyacona stopped Vince on the initial shot, but brother Rich found a loose puck on the goal line and punched it home for a 2-1 game.

Latrobe’s biggest producer all season  JeffJoe Regula got behind the Pioneer defense and beat Madza on an overpowering wrist shot on the short side to give Latrobe a 3-1 lead with 12:58 to go. Conestoga outshot Latrobe 12-4 in the third period and finally solved Loyacona as Adrian Piwonski found a rebound and scored with 52 seconds remaining to cut the lead to 3-2. Latrobe would hold on and win their first ever State Championship.

Team Story - Program Development and History

When you read a lot of hockey articles on the Internet, it gives one a sense of accomplishment when a program wins its first tournament game or a league overcomes years of obscurity to win a long sought after championship for the first time. For many of us that have followed the Pennsylvania State Championships  for many years, the question remained when the CPIHL would win a Flyers Cup. I am sure the Flyers Cup committee when they seeded Parkland, with an undefeated record in the Lehigh Valley League, was thinking along those same lines as the Trojans were granted an 11th seed. Parkland defeated Abington  of the Suburban League and then raised eybrows when it defeated ICSHL AA Downingtown East. When the Trojans defeated Suburban League power North Penn, the Hoosier's tapes started circulating as this team would be guaranteed a seat at the Flyers Cup AND Pennsylvania State Final since Cherokee was ineligible for the Pennsylvania State Championship. Cherokee earned that long anticipated Flyers Cup after several finals appearances and defeated Parkland in the Flyers Cup 6-3

For 15 out of the past 17 years, Western Pennsylvania has captured the Class AA crown for PA Hockey. Council Rock South interupted the WP run a year ago by defeating West Allegheny in the finals. Latrobe is the owner of three of those fifteen titles, as the Wildcats had a three year run in 2008, 2009 and 2010.All of Latrobe's Pennsylvania State Championships were one goal victories over Conestoga, Council Rock South and Downingtown East and the Wildcats are looking to join Canevin with four Pennsylvania State AA titles. Latrobe has reached the Pennsylvania Finals yielding only two goals in three games and netminder Shane Brudnock is looking to finish his career with a State Title he won as a freshman.

In the Penguins Cup Final against Pine Richland, the Wildcats’ Dan Staffen broke the ice with 9:08 left in the second period. Latrobe added two more goals in a quick span to take control Dalton Hunter’s wrister gave the Wildcats a 2-0 lead and Adam Ferguson swatted in a loose puck at the top of the crease 41 seconds later for a 3-0 Latrobe advantage.
