Can you share with us the rules differences between the two sides of the state?  I had heard the Eastern side has a distinct advantage in eligibility and player pool.

For AAA, all the schools are Private so they always have an advantage.  The LaSalle team that won a few years ago against NA had 3 future NCAA D1 players with one (Lipkin) being drafted by the Coyotes and playing World Juniors for Team USA this year.

All Schools play under the same rules. The Alignment for Flyers Cup is Private Schools play AAA and AA (700 + PIAA) and A (700 - PIAA) is based on Enrollment. PIHL uses competitive formula.

All Players Eligibility is by choice to play or not for the school they attend

Can you elaborate on the choice they play for part?  I’m just trying to figure it out in the state. Thanks!

Shouldn’t the eastern part of the state be basically open class based on that?

Put another way...

AAA is open boundary schools (i.e. private and parochial schools where students do not have to live in a specific area to attend)

AA and A are public schools districts where you have to live in the school district and attend the public school.  The split between AA and A is based on male student enrollment, just like the PIAA uses.

Do any public schools play in AAA these days?

Would be interesting to look at the numbers to see where some of the Western PA schools would fall if they were in the east.  I'd think a handful of AAA schools here would land in single A over there.

You are correct. Their Single A schools  are very big schools. I would venture to say that the west may never win the single A title again because they don’t move teams up and down like here in the west. Bayard Rustin won 6 or 8 straight state titles and are still a single A school. That would never happen here because the school would be moved up AA probably after their first state championship.

Actually, Perk Valley played in the AAA Flyers Cup this year because they were not pure but were strong enough to compete (i.e. they had 2  players from another school district that did not have a team).  I don't think they played any AAA teams during the regular season.

The other thing to note is that teams here in the East are not in leagues broken down by AAA/AA/A, at least in the Inter-County.  For the most part they are broken into conferences that are based on their PIAA leagues, regardless of school size.  For example, ChesMont is the West Chester schools, the Downingtown schools, Unionville and Avon Grove.  Some of those schools are A and some are AA.  They play each other, as well as non-conference games.  Then they get placed for Flyers Cup based on their AA or A size.

Perkiomen Valley was AAA because they entered into a PIAA compliant co-op (one school less than 300 male enrollment number) with an open enrollment school.

AA-A split is determined by enrollment.

All eligible schools are listed.

A natural break point is selected somewhere near the halfway point of number of schools.

The split for the next two years is done at 615.  Here are the schools on ether side of that.

OJR is smallest AA School and CR North is largest A school.

Harry S Truman 1 AA 665
Quakertown Community 1 AA 663
Owen J Roberts 1 AA 631
Council Rock North 1 AA 597
William Tennent 1 AA 573
Garnet Valley 1 AA 566
