1974-1975 Baldwin varsity hockey

Featured Replies

If I remember correctly, this is the first team to win a PA state championship. They are being inducted into the Baldwin Athletics Hall of Fame this evening. I think that Jim Cox is the only person to win a PA state championship as a player and then coach his alma mater to a state championship (Baldwin 1988 team).

Program Development and History

The Baldwin Hockey Program joined the Western Pennsylvania  Interscholastic Hockey League for the 1974-75 Season after two years in the South Penn High School Hockey League. The Highlanders won the South Penn League Championship in 1973 and 1974 under Head Coach Skip Remmy.

The Road to a Pennsylvania High School Hockey Championship

Baldwin enjoyed a 20-4-2 record in the regular season in winning the National Division of the WPIHL and headed into the first ever Pennsylvania High School Hockey Championship Playoffs. The Highlanders defeated former rival Bethel Park 3-1 to qualify for the Pennsylvania High School Hockey Championships to be held in Erie, Pennsylvania.

In Erie, the Highlanders would defeat Erie McDowell 4-3 and Springfield of Philadelphia 2-1 in overtime to earn a spot in the first ever Pennsylvania State Championship. Baldwin would face WPIHL rival Churchill and the teams battled to a 3-3 tie through regulation. Jim Cox's overtime goal at 1:10 of the extra session would give Baldwin the first ever State Championship of the State of Pennsylvania 4-3 over the Chargers. Goaltender Brad Allman would make 23 Saves and was named along with Cox to the All-Tournament Team.
