My point is match penalties shouldn't be handed out like candy.  You are correct, if the player swore at the ref there can be repercussions.  Usually that would be an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, 10 minute misconduct or a game misconduct.  Just like in school there should be a punishment but shouldn't go directly to being expelled.  That to would be ridiculous.  Yes the match penalties for removing the helmet is fine as it is a rule.  I just get concerned when I see so many match penalties in one game.  Now if they used hateful or discriminatory language that too would require a match.  A match is not something taken lightly.  It shouldn't be used as a weapon.  I don't know the circumstances in this game but seems like a lot of match penalties and should probably be looked into.

Swearingen at a ref definitely should be punished, but a match? I agree with you.

I have also seen a ref have a kid yell and swear at him while the ref was removing the kid for fighting, the ref didn’t say a word and just removed him from the ice. The kid then flipped off the whole crowd. Only penalties the kid got was for the fight.

It’s always the refs fault, right?  Couldn’t be parents or kids who don’t know how to act, probably learned from their parents. Looking forward to seeing you out there in the stripes next season.

Wish I could take credit for it.

Well if you ever met that coach then it would make sense

The match penalty tells you that the player didn't simply swear at the official and that the language escalated to something that USA hockey deems as being "hateful or discriminatory in nature".  I agree that simply swearing at a ref or an opposing player does not rise to the level of a match, but using some of the "magic words" that fall under "hateful or discriminatory" does according to USA Hockey.

I have first hand seen a player get a match for saying "that's fucking bullshit" about a call against him. While it's certainly not the right way for a 17 year old to speak to an adult referee, handing out a match is a disgrace.

I understand that if one of the “magic words” was used why it was a match.

All the parents complaining about the players behavior? Look in the damn mirror. Monkey see monkey do.

When it comes to egregious actions, the responsibility always lies with the player first.

Then the parents

Then the coach

Then the refs/league/USA Hockey

Then the courts and judicial system

Parents who continue to excuse their kid's actions get exactly what they deserve.

Yes, that is how it is supposed to be.  I have no idea if that was the case though.  If so they earned it.  I have seen officials give match penalties where players did not use any magic words Or meet the other criteria.   I have no idea what was said hear.  Just seems like a lot for one game lol

Give me a break. You’re acting like they gave out 20 match penalties.

Remember that Hateful or Discriminatory language now requires a Match.  It can be a very innocuous word that teenagers may use regularly to friends and they slip and say it to an opponent or official.  If heard, requires a Match.  Such is the word we live in now.

What a weird comment. Why would it be okay to use hateful or discriminatory language around friends?

If someone calls somebody the n-word or a f@ggot or something like that, it's just, "Whoops. Sorry, I didn't mean it. Me and my friends talk like that and I just said it out of habit." ?

Have you been near high school students when they are just hanging out lately?  Do you know the lyrics in the music they are listening to?  Have you overheard talk on the benches during a game?

I refer you back to this exhibit, with one small change.

Do your damn job!! If your own child is acting like a jackass on the ice all the time, that's 100% on the parenting.

Oh OK. It's perfectly fine, then?

It's not that it's "fine". But if you've been around 14-18 year olds, it's most certainly not uncommon to hear these things said....

Exactly!

Kids will follow the lead of the coach and it’s evident with the Allegheny coach. When you can hear him dropping F bombs at an official from across the building it’s no surprise.  Does the organization hold him accountable?

Allegheny organization holding someone accountable? That's a laugh.

Are we talking about casual use of the “N” word?  Sorry I can’t keep up with the excuses on here.

I was not. But a number of the other "key words" are common vocabulary for many teenagers.

It is not just the casual use of the "N" word, but it has been a point of emphasis for USA Hockey officials for the past handful of years for any word that is homophobic or describes a disability...  think of a word that starts with an "R".  Those will all qualify as leading to a match penalty during a game, regardless of if the player uses it in the hallway at school or when out with his buddies.  There was a local player that was assessed a match penalty at MidAm's last year for saying the "R" word I referenced above, and he missed the remainder of that weekend (it happened in the 1st period of the 1st game) as well as his current teams 1st game this season.  Essentially a 5 minute major and a 4 game suspension.

Pens Elite 16 U 3        Predators 16 U 2

https://gamesheetstats.com/seasons/14294/games/2810456?configuration[compact-view]=true&configuration[primary-colour]=BF242B&configuration[secondary-colour]=28438E

So this tells me that the Pens Elite 16 U beat the Predators 16 U Team in a shootout by 1 goal. Sorry I missed it.

The Predators AAA/AA are filled with very good High School Hockey Hockey Players who are encouraged not to play High School Hockey and the majority of these kids (over 80%) will end up in ACHA M1 if  they dont make DIII NCAA. And can do so after High School.

ALL of these kids should be playing High School Hockey until they turn 19. And can do so with High School Friendly organizations who keep the game count under 60 Total per year (4-5 games a week) and focus on quality instead of quantity. Then players will not be burned out from running all over  the country.
