USAH Mid-Am Tier 1 Rankings update December 19, 2018

Recommended Posts

Below is a summary of https://www.myhockeyrankings.com/ for the USA hockey mid-am district. The top 6 teams in each division are eligible to participate in mid-am district playdowns in March 2019 to determine the district representative to the Tier 1 USA hockey national tournament in April 2019. Presently, the U18 division appears wide-open with any of the teams listed could make a run over the next 3 months for the district banner. Pittsburgh Penguins Elite appear to have a tight grip on each division below midget major.

It will be interesting to see if these standings change much over the rest of the season. At this point it looks like the Vengence and Icemen are picking up where the Pgh Selects left off. The Vengeance has been bashed for calling up 16u players to their 18u team, and now the Icemen are following that lead by rostering PAHL players on their 15u team. Interesting because PAHL rules don’t allow it, but I guess they’ve figured out how to work the system somehow?

That is the link today's update for the 18U age group. Right now, the Preds trail the Barons by a mere 2 one hundredths of a point. The question is this, will MidAm force these two teams to play a play-in game to see who gets the 6th and final spot? It would seem only right since they set that precedent in 2017 when PPE Black Bantam Major team was forced to play a play-in game against Esmark even though they were separated by 1.72 points. See link below.

Is that the only play-in game? Seems like 16's and 15's should probably have one as well. 14's is clear cut. Maybe it would just make sense to go back to the 8 team format. I understand that they are trying to avoid having teams that aren't competitive but at the 18's in particular, once you add in Culver and Gilmour there should be 8 qualified teams. This year, maybe not. Maybe only 7 but an 8 team format is much cleaner in the way it plays out.

That REALLY sucks for Preds. IMHO there should be a playoff for any teams within 1 rating point for the final spots. 0.02 rating points to eliminate the Preds players and coaches from a shot at districts and national championship??? Reflects VERY poorly upon the directors of USAH Mid-Am district who set up such a scenario.

Not the 1st nor last time I will be wrong. Heard from a couple of different people that it would be a play-in... Unfortunately for the Preds the line has to be drawn somewhere. Strength of schedule seems to be the factor.. Being in the Tier 1 League has its benefits...
