Mid am has stated that hockey will be played like in Michigan. 4 on 4, no checking 10 players per team. That’s the end of any real hockey for this year, they should change the hockey is back slogan. This isn’t a county issue, it’s going to be every state. It‘s coming from Denver.

How many coaches? I guess 2? and one referee to make it 25 people on the ice?

What's going to be different January 1, 2021?

Did you see Paul Zeise's piece on this? Nothing's going to be different in January. In fact, it will be worse since it will be peak flu and cold season. No way there will be college football then.

  3. Big problem Pitt has with hockey is it's seen as competition for NCAA basketball. Way back when the Petersen Events Center was built, there was some noise about the Penguins paying for it to have ice capacity, possibly as a temporary home while a new arena was being built, and the idea was shot down. No one was more upset than the Pitt athletic department when the Penguins did not move to Kansas City or where ever they were going to end up. They are probably right too, attendance at 'the Pete' is not nearly as good when the basketball team isn't winning.

I think there will be an announcement within a week that competitive sports will be mostly shut down. I also predict that schools be restricted to remote learning for the first nine week period. The data shows that there has been a significant uptick in Covid-19 infections within the 13-18 year old age group over the past few weeks.

I have heard several districts in the South Hills - Bethel Park, Peters, Char Valley, Keystone Oaks among them - are planning on in person instruction, 5 days a week this fall. I think they may just be waiting for the governor to shut them down so they can say they aren't the bad guys though.

Can we get back to talking about hockey? Any rinks released a memo about the new 25 person gathering limit? I know of one rink has said that 25 on the ice and 25 off the ice (in the stands) is okay per the regulations.

I got emails from the Ice Castle and Baierl to remind me to wear a mask. I have not been in either rink lately, but have been in rinks in the early part of June and not seen a whole lot of adherence to the signs posted about mask wearing and whatnot. It is possible those rules are being enforced a bit more now.

FYI my oldest has now skated at 3 different rinks in a week. It appears to me the only rinks not selling Ice are community owned (lebo, beaver, etc ) college owned (rmu), pro owned (upmc) And Pahl hq (Allegheny).

Which rinks, if I may ask? Assuming one is Alpha, probably one is Castle of Ice, what's the third?

Is there ice at the YMCA in Bethel?

I don't like that it doesn't have playoff or a champ game either, but my kids have both had a great time playing in the event and the West 16u team took Silver last year which was a big accomplishment for them since the EAST team is usually stacked with AAA Flyers kids and basically no AAA kids from Western PA play on the West team.  We were looking forward to it this year but oh well.

My experience wasn't as good. In my opinion, this was a thing way back when most rinks were closed in the summer and there weren't spring teams and tryouts in the spring as well as summer practices. Now that hockey is more or less year-round, the time and expense for a 3 game tournament is a relic of days past. Other sports in the Keystone State Games allow team entry, probably just a matter of time before hockey does so as well.

I think that a season will still be possible even if tryouts were held Aug/Sept/Oct. with the season Oct/Nov. through Feb (normal ending date).

    Time will tell.

The main thing is we all need to be really careful and get through this peak so that the damage is minimized.

Anyone else been around long enough to remember when tryouts every year were Aug/September?
