I’m all for masking etc not just heading into rinks but where called for in public spaces.

i can’t speak to NY’s restrictions but PA has 26 states on its recommended quarantine list. PA’s current rate is 8%. So if it followed its own rules set by Wolf and Levine it too would be a quarantined state.

conversely, look at Ohio’s site. Pretty much every state in the Midwest from Iowa and culminating in Nevada. There’s a map with each state’s percentage per 100,000 cases. Reasonable. PA- not reasonable. PA has just a stupid list of states with no research or actual info on their site. Ohio at least has graphical explanations. They pull this stuff out of nowhere in Harrisburg. And as I said I believe Covid is a threat and it’s real but it’s the blind leading the blind with the governor and his staff. Also Bogen. Just a bunch of bull. Why should it be different state by state.

Makes no sense.  South Dakota and Nebraska are on the list. Their percentage is way lower than NY, NJ, and PA.  Technically our 3 Democratic Governor states really should be on the Quarantine list. But it seems as if when you have a Republican Governor, you are on the list.

At the risk of The King coming for me, since my opinion is always wrong...I would say it depends on your kid's skill level and where you want to play. The fact is, PAHL is not set up for BY, nor should it be. Western PA does not have the numbers to support it at this time, as has been said over and over here. The top team for most big organizations is usually BY. If your kid is trying out at a big organization and is a AA player, most likely that will be default BY team, maybe a few exceptional younger kids sprinkled in here and there.

If you are looking at one of the independent teams, are you able to judge if the kids are at a similar level? There are some around having some success.

Both my kids are in low number BY so this has never really been an option for them, and I really have a hard time understanding the fascination with doing it. Maybe take a look at the coach's kid on that team....what is that kid's skill level? Does he seem to lag behind the rest a bit? Sometimes, not always, that is the primary purpose of doing that, because if it were a mixed BY, that child and a few others would likely not be on that team, and goodness what a tragedy if those children played in a lower division.

Mixed BY has been a good experience for us, with teams formed based on skill. They liked playing with different kids each year. Being exposed to different coaches. For the good athlete (and some children, not all), having the more experienced players pushes them and they grow more than they would have on a BY team. I have seen bottom players in the younger BY get left in the dust over the course of a season, so I would say for them, it was not good developmentally. That child may have been better off playing at a lower level. Those bubble children are always hard.

The issue with BY teams around here is that you can see a much bigger range of skill from top to bottom, making it hard to compete. And if they get placed in a division with mostly older BY, they get slaughtered.

So, in short, it depends on your kid. Don't let coaches tell you how it is so fantastic that the kids stay together....kids don't develop at the same pace. You should expect that some may come and go over time based on skill, growth spurts, etc. If the tryout is looking for skill, you shouldn't see the same kids every year. Keeping them together purely because of age, it's just not good developmentally. And... parents tend to look for greener pastures. Don't do it just to keep kids together, that can't be guaranteed by anyone.

It's an art, not a science. Some years your kid is going to have a good year, others not so much. Look for a program that is interested in development at all of its levels, not just top teams. More likely to find that your kid will be placed right and will be developed, whatever his skill.

Why does PAHL support the birth year then in bantam having AA Major and AA minor? Is it just because they check

Ynot02 is 100% correct and because we are focused on hockey doesn't mean this isn't happening across other sports as well, baseball and soccer jump to my mind first.  If you look at youth travel sports in general, there are the "top programs" and then there are the programs that were formed to fill a void in the market to make parents/players happy.  A parent making the choice to spend their time and money in that way should be no ones business but their own.  If a player has an opportunity to play on what he/she perceives to be a better team or one that provides better experiences, then go and do it.  If it doesn't work out for that person moving forward, then there are always other options and other players/parents will be more than willing to fill that players spot.  Why are we not happy that we even have players participating in the sport, especially with the sedentary lifestyle more and more kids are leading now?  Just because it is not for you, or you object to it on some other level, doesn't mean that you are any more correct than the person making the choice to play on those teams are wrong.

Baseball is the same. Kids don't want to play on rec teams so they play just tournament ball and in other competitive leagues that are just for travel teams and pay lots more than the other families but the tournament teams require the kids to be committed and attend all games and tournaments and rec teams will allow kids to miss. Some pahl teams have a lack of commitment but it is really the coaches who have to require the commitment

I have no idea what tryout float means nor what these numbers are supposed to tell us. I do hear that the 2007 Team 2 numbers will be lucky to reach 17. Apparently there is a mass exodus toward a PAHL organization in close proximity to the UPMC Center. With that said, the much more intriguing events are still yet to unfold with the impending arrival of who knows how many recruits for the 14U and older teams. Good luck to all of those players who have been there for years and will now be lucky to have a place on those teams.

many ppe 07s at vengeance 07 tryouts

  5. Tryout Registration Process

On or about January 31st the vice president for each state in the MidAm District will e-mail a spreadsheet to local program heads; the local program head provides the requested information for the top players in his/her program at the 14 – 17 ages (birth years 2005 – 2002) and e-mails the completed spreadsheet back to the state VP.  Nominations (spreadsheets) will be accepted until mid April for all ages; the regular registration period ends one week prior to the tryout dates for each age group.  Nominees will receive an e-mail with registration information from Rocky Mountain Register (info@usahockey.com).  Check your spam file for this e-mail if you believe you have not received it before contacting us.  You must use the user name and password supplied by Rocky Mountain Register and pay via credit card online in order to complete the registration process.  Please note if we experience high registration numbers at a given birth year, the cutoff date can be altered.

Wow, I am extremely overwhelmed by all of this.  I'm brand new here and found this site for help.  I'm trying to get some insight and just got the pants scared off of me.   My son just finished up his first year as a travel goalie.  He did well and received a lot of praise from quite a few coaches at the rink.   We have some building to do but he would love to try out for PPE (he is just more exposed to that team).   I don't think he's quite ready...maturity wise more so than skill.   This post has my head spinning.   Do we or don't we (for any AAA team)?   Is it worth it?   Is it really that political?   Are they all that political?   If you make a name somewhere, would another team want you?   Is this how nasty things get?   I've been researching a lot about the Vengeance and Esmark....and they are located closer to us but would he even stand a chance at any of these teams (with the idea that he is actually good enough).   This is all very disheartening seeing how mean people can be.  His goalie coach suggests that we shoot for the AAA level of playing (not saying he's NHL material, but maybe a little help with college would be nice). I guess my son isn't the only one who is going to have to develop a thick skin if we travel this route.  His mom and dad are too.

    Signed,

    A Disheartened Goalie Mom

She never said someone said he was getting a college scholarship-she said “maybe a little help with college would be nice,” which I’m sure every parent has said about a sport or academics. She said the goalie coach said to shoot for AAA.

I don't understand everyone's obsession with bashing Posey and any organization he is involved in.  Last year everyone whined about Selects being AAA and not really AAA.  So this year, they merge with Esmark/Vipers and become a AA organization, the Viper Stars.  Now everyone is bitching about that?  My child is not playing there this year which unfortunately, was a financial decision on our behalf.  I will say however that when my son did play for Posey, win or lose he has never loved hockey more.  Brad was a spectacular coach to my son and I will tell you that anyone on that 05 team will tell you the same thing. He is good with the kids, gets them all to give their best each time and continually improve and makes it fun at the same time.  I know he has a past but in my experience with him I have never seen any issue of the rumors that i have heard.  If given the chance, my child would be back with him in a heartbeat.

The funniest part is a lot of the people I have heard bash him are paying for private lessons with him.  So keep talking, keep sitting on a message board eating sour grapes and running your mouth.  Doesn't seem to be affecting him much.

Have you ever had any insight to what happened when he was with the Renegades?

I am certainly not making excuses I am the first one to reprimand my child if in the wrong. I just don’t see why such the hatred towards this one team when it is a division problem. There were kids throwing punches and taking helmets off from the other team yet our kids should have just sat there? I have seen kids in AAA hockey do worse than these  boys did with no reprocussion. I agree safety should be first and these kids need to be penalized when wrong.

Not reallly a division problem-don’t group the all others in with the NP team

    Mt Lebo-played 5 games, has 4 FPP

mon Valley-4 games, has all 4 FPP

allegheny-4 games, has all 4 FPP

vipers stars-5 games, has 4 FPP

butler valley- 2 games, has 2 FPP

shaha- 4 games, has 2 FPP

    preds-3 games, has 3 FPP

foxes and North Pittsburgh-have only 1 fair play point  foxes played 4 games, NP played 7 games

Also the term ”brawl” gets thrown around on this board a lot, was anyone hospitalized? Seems like most of these kids get along fine away from the ice.

Yes there was a player from Allegheny who got a concussion playing then 2 weeks ago and just got cleared this week. You can watch it on Live barn and see the kid celebrating as the Aha player laid on the ice not moving at first.
