The actual reason we got moved down before he was rostered was because we had 1 goalie. 1 goalie to play jv and varsity, and then long after that the second goalie came along

…Because a kid who was the backup last year as a junior quit.  Forgot about that?  Also, 8 seniors on Montour this season.  Last season QV played the entire season with 1 goalie who was a freshman.

The way I see it, yes he should, as long as you attend and are living in the district you should be allowed to play for them

This is simply not the way it works, anywhere for any sport. There are many reasons for this, not the least of which is school tax revenue created by single family households.  This is actually part of the reason that Aliquippa has had to play “up” in football… too many students moving into the district.
Let’s remember that Montour got moved down to “A” BEFORE this player was on the roster and probably used the “our goalie graduated” as one of the reasons for their case to move down.

  3. Parent: “hey coach, did you know that a player from Ohio is billeting with a family in our district and playing AAA hockey. We should get him to play on our varsity team”

Coach: “well, that would be great, but it is against the rules, and for good reason. If it were allowed, schools and teams would be able to essentially roster players from anywhere, as long as they were billeting. For example, imagine if every AAA player who billets was also able to roster on a high school team.  That would create unfair competition, especially at the A level, and especially since the divisions are determined by the previous season result and roster information submitted by each school.”

parent: “ok, thanks for clarifying that.  It makes sense”

    Open…shut.

Not only the board but the coaches. Montour has already had 2 previous suspensions this season for none rostered coaches and to many players dressed. It sucks for the kids but the adults made the decisios coaches and board. If they are found to have done something wrong with this goalie it shouldn't come to anyone's surprise.

QV didnt face those kind of roster issues: ended the season with 14 skaters (grades 9 through 12, 6 of whom were freshmen).  No JV.

Ironically I bet they still make the playoffs.  The other goalie was pretty solid in a very competitive division.

    Wait a second…

    the other goalie…

    .836 save percentage

gave up 4 goals each time he started vs Wheeling Park (who won zero total games)

played the majority of his games vs the bottom teams   Lost to QV 4-1 in his only start vs a team that made the playoffs

so, um, not really “pretty solid”

Just trying to help with all the inaccurate statements.  Some of the insinuations on here are kind of mind boggling.  Recruiting for PIHL hockey…AAA organizations placing kids in districts….billeting to recruit kids.  I could go on and on.   It’s amazing.  BTW I’m not a Montour parent and do not live in district.

I don't know any of the mechanics but do know he lives in the district and attended school at montour, rosters were approved, he was approved by previous commissioner to play, and was NOT recruited placed or billeted for Montour hockey.  He just was excited to play a little HS hockey when he had time (10 games total but coach would have loved to play him all 20 if he was available) and happened to be pretty good so let’s screw that up.  BTW there are a LOT of AAA kids playing A hockey in PIHL so it’s not like he was some ringer.
I’ll let all of you play this out in your minds now and won’t bother your board any further.

So now that it is Districts and such, since he was just “playing for fun”, he won’t be the goalie for them in the PIHL playoffs.  You know, since he just did it for fun, right?

  7. I am not sure how kids born in 2009-2014 (half of the counted registrations) has anything to do with college freshman. What if this chart was based on USA hockey registrations from when these current freshmen were 8U? Wouldn’t that show more of an accurate record of development?  I realize that it’s impossible to track kids moving from district to district as they age, but this chart is an oversimplification.

I think you might be ignoring the numerator of the simple math equation, which was the heart of my question.

Assume a volunteer/working coach has his or her 2 hour evening to devote to coaching one team. That’s 2 hours per day /1 team or 2 hours per team. Compared to if you’re full time, spending 8 hours per day at the program. Assume 2 hours is program admin, and other 6 hours are for 2 teams. That’s 6 hours / 2 teams or 3 hours per team.

To your other point- ‘Are we really at the point where we think Coaching 10U hockey should be expected to pay a "livable wage"?’ I’m not expecting it, especially in a broad scale. But at top tier AAA programs, that’s what is happening. This is a thread about PPE, and it is happening there. The full time coaches there definitely have a livable wage. I wouldn’t have even brought this up if you his were about 10u In house.

They also sometimes have to worry about coaching back to back to back to back games during a showcase weekend, or even show up right as games start because of a previous game of the other team they are coaching.  SO professional.

They coach multiple teams most of the time because they are a parent or family member coach and are not allowed to be paid to coach family. With that they take on a team usually around the same age and have those teams travel together wherever they go so the coach is not spread out over weekends. The funny thing about that is that BOTH teams still have to pay a coaches fees for the coaches hotel and expenses so they make double money on their travel.

I think you meant to say “Kathy Pippy makes double the money and gets double Marriott points on their travel”

maybe in your circle of friends ….

What does that even mean?  Look around the country and see what happens when sports are opened up to all socio-economic groups (football, basketball, and now soccer): white athletes become less and less successful.
golf, tennis, lacrosse, hockey: rich white people sports.

This is a different take that may be helpful to new parents that I appreciate. If you really feel the need to do AAA, independent, whatever, I would rather see kids do it at an older age. Pewee, Squirt, even bantam...so much on a family before they hit puberty and really see if they have talent.

And no one ever cares when I say this, because it is all me me my kid my money around here, but I struggle with how this helps develop the sport overall. Pushing an already cost prohibitive sport to even a higher expense makes no sense to me and will at some point hurt growth. Why you wouldn't want to encourage and find ways to allow all to participate from the USA Hockey perspective makes no sense to me. You want the best athletes, yes? Not just the best athletes with money. There are other countries who don't follow this travel/elite model and they are putting out incredibly talented players.

The secret that no one talks about with hockey and lacrosse: rich white people like it how it is because they know that if there was equal opportunity from a young age and all the way up, their nominally athletic kids would get replaced by black kids. Soccer in our nation at the highest level is finally improving on the world stage bc our best players are finally diverse (mainly non-white).

Oh it was impactful.  It destroyed the older 16U and 19U levels at PAHL as the Pens and Steel City started grabbing a bunch of players that didn't belong at those levels to fill out rosters.  And since there isn't a strong base of girls continuing to play at that level, you get divisions with 3-4 teams or no division at all.

Name a girl FROM Pittsburgh that has had a SUCCESSFUL Division 1 hockey career WITHOUT one of the following:

    - Selects Academy

    - Shadyside Academy

    - participating in a Spring/Summer tour with Pippy

    - spent time at another hockey boarding school

Pens Elite Girls take credit for girls that got rostered, played for a year wearing the jersey, and never once stepped foot into UPMC for “training”.

New poster. Had to jump in. Definitely have experience with a child in PPE and also one elsewhere. There are pros and cons, as with every team and organization. But isn’t 99% of youth hockey development about practice and coaching? Practicing with appropriate practice plan designed by a coach who knows how to develop kids? Practicing with peers who make you better? Getting instant and constant feedback by a good coach or coaching staff? Generally, PPE is reliable in providing this at the youth level we seem to be talking about quite a bit here. However, if you’re fortunate enough to have a great coach/parent/group of kids outside of PPE, you can get the same thing. Problem is, that’s very inconsistent. I think the bigger problem is parents setting unrealistic expectations for their 7 year old kid, and ruining it for both the parents and the kid. This is mostly noise. Do the kids really have an opinion on what we’re talking about? If they do, that’s our fault. Not any organization’s fault.

Also, this discussion has been ignoring girls hockey. That’s fine, but what PPE, and some of the original influences in the girls side from Pittsburgh, has done for girls hockey is something we can be proud of.

“what PPE, and some of the original influences in the girls side from Pittsburgh, has done for girls hockey is something we can be proud of. ”

    Thats a joke, right?

Only 25 skaters (23 boys and 2 girls) at McDowell for varsity and jv. We belong at A level for now but trying to build This weird system does not exist for any other sport. McDowell can only get 23 boys out of more than 1000 to play ice hockey? There are football and soccer programs at the high school level that suck and lose every game because they just can’t get enough kids to play. They don’t move those schools down a classification. Don’t come at me with the “it’s expensive to play hockey”

doesnt matter u16 Esmark choked.  CULVER won. and pens will get in via at large.......... YURI reign is coming to an end in pgh..with no u15 he is in trouble

Only 1 Pens Elite team, U14, won.  Is this the least number of Pens Elite teams to win Mid Ams?  Must be.

  16. 2 hours ago, PUCKCOVID19 said:

yes they are better and much higher ranked then esmark..  pens where top 10. iF remark was to win tmw they would more then likely be the lowest seed at nationals and wouldn't probably even win a game

Even though they just beat Barons, and Pens lost to Barons.
