Extending three weeks and rescheduling games.

Are the games starting up again next weekend?  There are tons of kids who haven’t been on the ice at all since Dec 5-6. Mt Lebo isn’t even opening their rink until Jan 9th-so those kids wouldn’t even get a practice in

I sure hope you are right.  I agree that there should be no reason why the season can't be extended into at least May.  At that point I think you might have some conflicts with Spring and Summer sports.  For some kids of course they pretty much play year round with Spring teams right back into the Fall.  Seems like they take a break for the month of July and then are pretty much back in to it.

My concern is how long the Rinks that are not open can hold on before they can't pay there bills.  Does anyone know if the organizations pay in advance for ice time?  I would imagine that ice time is an organizations biggest expense.

Lots of high schools have now canceled winter sports until the third week of January now. But this is going to conflict with track, baseball, and other spring sports if extended

Based on the governor's 11/19/20 clarification on masks for youth athletes, the PAHL will continue to recommend masking at all times per the PA Guidance, but will defer to the athlete's choice only while they are wearing their helmet and mouth guard:

According to Section 3, the athlete would be asked to work through alternatives that would reduce or eliminate the respiratory droplets that would impact others in proximity. If the sport, equipment, or exertion level does not allow for face covering to be worn safely then the athlete should not wear a face covering.
Please refer to the full PA Guidance for Sports document updated 11/19/20 and posted on the PAHL website. https://www.pahockey.com/covid19
Athletes must continue to mask when not on the ice/bench for game play.
All coaches, admin, and spectators must mask and social distance. Do not allow them to be non compliant and risk shutting our youth sport down.
Finally, there may still be facilities that will require a mask during game play unless you have a medical excuse. Your player will have to wear one at these locations during game play until such time as they amend their rules. Always check before you travel as this is a moving target and may continually be updated.

That would make for some interesting reading, Benji.  Can you post a link supporting your claim that hockey players will be getting bacterial infections for wearing a "wet mask?"

Doctors and nurses wear masks for 8-12 hr shifts, a tad more than hockey players do in a 75 minute ice slot.  But I am open minded and look forward to reading more about this.

PSAC sports practices cannot be held when it is raining due to the ineffectiveness of masks when wet.

I assume that the part about "allowed inside some athletic facilities", he was thinking of fields/stadiums rather than indoor venues. Is is possible that he was being honest about the full teams on benches part? He may not be aware of the logistics of setting up a hockey game. That seems more encouraging than him just giving a straight up "I don't care" response. The restaurant restrictions were eased a little today. Perhaps the indoor gathering limit is next. It sounds like he acknowledges the inconsistencies and may revisit things. I have said that having the same limits on large & small facilities does not make sense. My whole complaint is with people that simplify, minimize & politicize the whole pandemic. Those are the people that are keeping us stuck in this purgatory. Easing restrictions would look a lot less scary if it was apparent that most people would adhere to common sense social distancing measures.

Sadly if he “isn’t aware” of the setup of hockey and did this unknowingly, he still made families spend lots of money that didn’t need to be spent to travel to Virginia, Ohio, etc. the last few weekends to get games in.  Besides the money the people spent traveling to play hockey, he also unknowingly contributed then to a few hundred families who went to Ohio and Virginia and then returned back to PA and into the schools and rinks this week bringing back any virus such as covid.

I don't think its USA Hockey. They have left it up to the districts to make the call. From the website: "As USA Hockey continues adapting to the coronavirus situation, the safety of participants always remains our top priority. USA Hockey will sanction hockey for the 2020-21 season and medical experts have confirmed that with taking appropriate precautions, it is indeed safe to play hockey today."

If it was MidAm and USA Hockey then Ohio wouldn’t be able to be having games like they are.

It only sounds stupid to the small minority of people that do not understand how contagious diseases work or to those that are selfish enough to not consider the possible effect.

Have any kids in our area died that have been playing hockey in these rinks with the same people since May? Or playing baseball and softball and basketball since May? Kids have been playing sports for over 4 months now.

The people going to these established made bad choices by acting as if there was no pandemic. Nothing would be closed if they had. Everyone was asked to social distance from day one, but they went to these places and did not. It's unfortunate that these people were selfish and now the owners of these establishments are suffering. I feel sorry for these business owners, but public health was in mind with these decisions. Ask your representative for a lifeline as you're business is hurting by no fault of your own.

Going to a hockey game, a bar, or a restaurant is a choice.

If anyone wants to stay locked in for the next year, then they can do so.

But nobody is forcing anyone to meet a friend for a beer without eating a sandwich at the same time or having your kid play 5 on 5 hockey with 15 players in a team.

    it is a personal choice

That's totally false. I contend that the majority of kids will be happy playing with restrictions (4 vs 4, 9 skaters, etc...) if we stay positive and not try to convince them that their government refuses to let them have fun. I am not saying we shouldn't strive to reach another, more fun, solution that health officials/government will permit. I am just tired of the minimizing of this crisis and whining about sacrifices. Then the political, talk radio BS gets thrown in so everyone can feast on the red meat.

Nobody is forcing anyone to play hockey or any sports. It is completely elective and everyone’s own choice.

It is frustrating when people are forced to have regulations for a hockey rink when there aren’t any for many other establishments (Walmart, Rivers casino, Jennerstown, Motorcross, Carlisle Car Show, etc.) All is these are elective to go to.

  10. From our hockey org:

As such, we were told that in order to be sanctioned by USA Hockey we needed to follow our state’s rules.  If we do not follow the state’s rules, then we are participating in non-sanctioned activity.

On August 6th, the State Health Department updated its guidance on youth sports.  This guidance included a 25 person limit for indoor sporting events (See Attached .PDF).

So, why is Sanctioning important?  Because aside from giving us the playing rules and structure under which we operate, USA Hockey provides insurance to cover our players and coaches.  This insurance is designed to help participants cover medical expense after they have paid a certain deductible out of their own pocket.  Also, USA Hockey provides coverage for catastrophic incidents.  Please see pages 5 through 10 of the attached Insurance Handbook.

This insurance coverage is vital to every hockey organization.  While severe injuries are rare, they do happen.  They have happened locally to individuals playing in the Pittsburgh area.

So, we are telling our teams to comply with the 25 person rule when they do any sort of scrimmages.  To accomplish this, We are saying to play 9 skaters and 1 goalie on each team.  Throw in the refs, EMT, and one person in the scorebox, and we will be around the 25.  Is this ideal?  Absolutely not, and we are working to overcome it.

Got it thanks........now I will throw it out there.  So what is Alpha's excuse?  How does an org with 19 SCIR teams plus Vengeance get away with NOT HAVING IT?

Someone said that they have to contract with another group because vengeance is a junior team that requires them to use a different system?? Maybe something hockey tv?? Not sure; just mentioned by someone else when we talked about this
