    This is a great article but it only really touches on the very top tier of club hockey, which, just like few kids are gonna play DI, few are going to get on these teams. It didn't delve into anything else that you might find.

    That’s one of the reasons why I wanted to share it. It’s one piece of the whole picture. For those who pursue Juniors and don’t get a sniff at NCAA D3, these are good options - and many are much better quality schools than you find in NCAA D3.

    Several points in the article are valid even for the lower divisions in ACHA and AAU. The variety of fees, possible student run/student coached, etc. Also, depending on the school, some struggle to field a team, while it can be very competitive to make any team at others. Even lower division schools “recruit” and have prospect skates. Getting in touch with the coach in advance is important. Assuming because you’ve played a decent level of hockey here in western PA is no guarantee you’ll make a team. I’ve just encountered a lot of disappointed players/families lately who didn’t have enough insight, and figured it might be a helpful topic for this board. I’m just trying to encourage others to share their insights on college club hockey to show the full picture.

  2. As I talk with more people who expect their kid will play club hockey in college, I’m finding there are a lot of misconceptions and overall lack of knowledge. I found this recent article that really provides some good insight related to both ACHA and AAU.

    Not looking to debate what teams are mentioned (or not) and who’s better than who locally. There is another thread for that. The goal of this post is to educate those hoping to play club in the future. By sharing our experiences and lessons learned, let’s provide knowledge (and opinions of course!) about the landscape and where it is headed.

    It would really be something if PIHL would promote a "game of the week" and have those games played at RMU or Lemieux.  Maybe make those a Friday night game instead of a Thursday night game.  I'm probably wishing here, these kids deserve to be playing in front of a crowd if possible.

    This is a great idea. Once football season ends, Friday nights would bring more fans.

    I always thought which way you went had to do with number of seniors, but a little research shows that Knoch has 6 seniors (JV-2), QV has 5 seniors (V-A), Gateway 5 seniors (JV-3), and Beaver has 4 seniors (V-A). so i'm not really sure if that holds water. QV clearly made the correct choice, Beaver, probably not, but hard to say, after taking some beat downs early in the season, it looks like they finished off the year with some competitive games.  Knoch and Gateway are doing well in their divisions. Knoch probably could have won some class A games, Gateway probably made the correct choice, really hard to know though just looking at PIHL site.

    Gateway and Knoch are both co-ops. Probably wouldn’t have fared well in the Varsity D2 division, or would have records similar to Central Valley and Trinity.

    Is it unfathomable to believe that this is possibly what went down:

    Montour reaches out to Pihl to discuss said player eligibility via the old, outdated mode of communication- the telephone.  Explains situation in detail.  High ranking pihl offical or officials say that transfer eligibility does not apply to this situation for whatever reason.  Perhaps because he did not transfer high schools idk.  Montour says ok, thank you very much, have a nice day.  Should montour have said “send me an email to confirm”?  Before you say yes:

    If at your job you are allotted a 30 min lunch break and you ask your boss, “is it ok if I take an hour for lunch today, my father is visiting from San Diego”?  He replies “sure”.  Do you ask “can you send me an email to confirm”?

    Suppose you are a college student and you have an unfortunate death in the family and the service is scheduled at the same time as your chemistry exam.  You ask your professor after class if he can reschedule your exam explaining the situation.   He says “sure, sorry for your loss”.  Do you then reply “please send me an email”?

    Perhaps there even is an email.  Just saying, to assume that there were definitely ill-intentions involved is close-minded.

    No, since you are requesting the exception, YOU send the email with a summary of the conversation so you have it in writing. That burden is not on the person who granted the exception.

    I don’t think they have any to buy in Western PA.

    I agree, as most of the remaining are municipal rinks. Based on their purchases to date, their gap seems to be the north. Based on the ownership Baierl seems unlikely. Frozen Pond just doesn’t seem like a good investment - the building and the property (built on that hillside) have to be a deterrent. There were previous rumors about RMU… maybe that is still a possibility?

    It's been rehashed many times in this thread and on this forum, but PAHL would be very competitive if the independent AAA and AA teams didn't leave. Maybe PAHL could/should find a way to incentivize teams/organizations to stay? I don't have any concrete solutions, but I'm sure we can collectively think of some haha.

    I completely agree. So the question is why are these teams leaving? If it truly is because of playing teams in the AA bracket that don’t belong there and it’s a waste of time, PAHL needs to stop allowing teams that don’t belong in AA in that division. However I think it’s too late to fix it now. I think the trend toward larger AA divisions started about 6-7 years ago, and here we are. I remember when there were very small AA divisions - only 4-6 teams. But then you started to see 10-13 teams. AA is supposed to be for the TOP talent, but PAHL allowed it to become something else. That AA designation used to be an elite class and an accomplishment. It hasn’t been that way in years, especially at the younger age divisions.

    This punishment is obviously a slap on the wrist for Armstrong but not sure what else the PIHL can really do.  They could have sent a strong message that this won’t be tolerated and brought the hammer down but chose to take a safe approach and that’s definitely understandable.

    Armstrong is one of the better teams in AA this year and I for one will be watching closely if they get to the PIHL’s biggest stage in the finals and let the league have to deal with that after letting the team off the hook here.

    I hope this dies down for the players sake after Monday and thank anyone with true intentions to change this sort of behavior going forward.  All of this starts at home.

    PIHL could have - SHOULD HAVE - made the game a forfeit and the future Mars/Armstrong game a forfeit. It’s completely ridiculous that hasn’t happened yet.

    I do have a comment to every one of you wanna-be supervisors bitching about the officials....

    // Rant Mode ON

    LACE 'EM UP AND GET OUT THERE AND PROVE THAT YOU CAN DO BETTER! NO EXCUSES LIKE "I CAN"T SKATE OR I WOULD"! PUT UP OR STFU ALREADY! I CANNOT TELL YOU HOW MANY PROMISING YOUNG OFFICIALS I HAVE SEEN QUIT OVER THE LAST 30 YEARS BECAUSE OF YAHOOS LIKE YOU! I GUARANTEE THAT IT IS A WHOLE LOT EASIER TO SEE THE PLAY FROM THE TOP ROW THAN IN THE MIDDLE OF IT. THE DIFFERENCE IS LIKE WATCHING VIDEO IN SUPER SLOW MO ON A 60" SCREEN VS WATCHING ON FAST FORWARD THROUGH A FISHEY LENS. EVEN STANDING AGAINST THE GLASS IN THE CORNER IS VERY, VERY DIFFERENT THAN BEING PART OF THE PLAY.

    //Rant mode OFF

    I would agree if this was about the play on the ice. It is not. Officials stop games for spectator issues all the time. If this was directed at either of them, it would not have been tolerated. What happened goes way beyond “ref you suck” or “call it both ways” - comments that I have seen games stopped and spectators thrown out for. I usually side with officials, but not this time.

    Why is it the Armstrong Football players aren’t being punished?? They were the majority of the student section. They were the ones who were chanting and yelling. They were questioned on Friday by the principal but since they had a big game no one got suspended! Heaven forbid the prize football players get in trouble. They were the reason to all this.  The hockey players are being targeted and getting threats. The refs (who are always horrible) and security should have done something!! They failed this poor young lady. I was at this game but was too far away I didn’t hear the chants  but I’ve seen the videos. For that I’m so sorry and ashamed. Student section was always fun growing up to be part of but this day in age, acting like this is horrible.
    Hockey is a contact sport. ALL teams play rough and dirty not just Armstrong. Recent example: Shaler picked up and tossed an Armstrong player into the penalty box almost landing on his head and another player attacked an Armstrong player that was already down breaking his collar bone. So why is Armstrong always being targeted?? Both teams had their hits and penalties.  It’s not the hockey players fault yet they are being punished way more than the student section aka the Armstrong football players and cheerleaders.
    also, there’s a letter that was sent to the school district last week naming Armstrong football players and cheerleaders “popular kids” as being bullies to the LGBTQ community yet nothing is done to these players.

    Put the focus on the correct issue. start punishing the right team.

    You’re obviously associated with the Armstrong hockey team. If you don’t like how your school handled the situation, take it up with your superintendent.

    Those cheers seemed more than loud enough for anyone there to hear. If you didn’t, it’s likely other Armstrong parents were close enough to stop it if they had a problem with it and were really worried about how it would reflect on their players. How many did that?

    Stop deflecting the blame. You’re all culpable. Whatever punishment the hockey association and school district receive will be deserved but probably not sufficient.

    Is the PIHL Board meeting on November 10th open to the public?  I see it is an in person meeting. The goalie from Mars should go to that meeting and ask them if they are going to address the situation.

    She absolutely should not have to do that. If the league isn’t already communicating with her and with Mars Hockey on the course of action being taken, shame on PIHL. Her lawyer should go to the meeting.

  12. § 2709.  Harassment.

    (a)  Offense defined.--A person commits the crime of harassment when, with intent to harass, annoy or alarm another, the person:

    (1)  strikes, shoves, kicks or otherwise subjects the other person to physical contact, or attempts or threatens to do the same;

    (2)  follows the other person in or about a public place or places;

    (3)  engages in a course of conduct or repeatedly commits acts which serve no legitimate purpose;

    (4)  communicates to or about such other person any lewd, lascivious, threatening or obscene words, language, drawings or caricatures; …

    If the goalie was my kid, I would be calling the police, getting a lawyer and filing criminal harassment charges. The PIHL, Armstrong Riverhawks hockey, the Armstrong school district, MIDAM, USA Hockey and the refs would also be named in filing.

    Amazing how if a spectator says something about the refs during a game, they will stop the game and address it, and oftentimes won’t resume the game until that person leaves. But this wasn’t worth stopping the game over? It’s absolutely sickening. The people who take SafeSport training and are supposed to protect these kids (refs, coaches, board members, etc) all did nothing? That is honestly scary.

    It won't be a dump soon and that's the problem. They don't care if it's a dump, they care that it was cheap ice. Cheap ice = increased profit.

    If they want cheap ice, going from PIA to Southpointe doesn’t seem to be the answer since they are now both owned by Black Bear. One would think the rates would be the same at both rinks. Assuming that Black Bear is canceling all existing ice contracts and negotiating new ones, that would leave the door open for Esmark to go elsewhere, but that’s a lot of ice slots needed. Southpointe seems to be the only rink that could accommodate that need, especially if they are adding another sheet. Does anyone know how much is Black Bear increasing the ice fees?
