the first year that they had the 2005 team, they finished in top 20. (18th). that would've been top spot for Mid ams in tier 2.....

That 2005 Icemen team was Tier 2 that season, not AAA, and they weren’t the top spot. The top MIDAM/PA Bantam team that season was 2004 Mt Lebo, rated 92.77. There were 8 teams in MIDAM/PA rated higher than that Icemen team’s 87.10 rating. Just trying to understand your post...

How do you know that going into tryouts?  Very tough decisions to make when your kid really wants to play AAA. How do you know which team is a good investment. I guess maybe limit tryout to the top 3 and if you don't make it move on to a good AA team?

Do some research. Look back at prior seasons on MyHockey. Talk to people. Look at team ratings. If they are the same as Tier II team ratings, it’s really not a AAA team.

  3. Speaking from experience with a spring team last year, I would say proceed with caution and take the “terms and conditions” very seriously. We aren’t out of the woods with this pandemic, so be prepared to not get what you paid for and/or lose money if you do sign up and they can’t deliver.

Why not identify these two rinks?

Honestly, why bother? There is incredible inconsistency in the enforcement of the restrictions. Some rinks won’t take the chance of getting caught, while others have been told by local law enforcement that they won’t cite them if they are open.

If everyone continues to do whatever they want, the numbers won’t go down, and this shutdown will just be extended. People need to be wearing masks anytime they aren’t with people in their household, and respect each other’s personal space and we wouldn’t need a damn shutdown. No one has to stay home if we do a few simple things. But people are just too selfish to do that. Don’t inconvenience them. It’s everyone else’s responsibility to do what’s right.

Everyone who is complaining about hockey and other sports being shutdown, ask your kids if they are wearing masks in the locker room. You may be hoping they are, but guess what - the majority aren’t. It’s a big joke to them. The players are missing games, but the downstream impact to the rinks, leagues, organizations, team managers, etc is huge. Is it worth it?

I guess I expect that this mask thing, like everything else, will work itself out after a few weeks of playing under it (assuming we get a few weeks of playing), but this is a fair question. It's likely that enforcement of the mask mandate will vary widely between teams. How do you force your players to play at a disadvantage if the other team has a large number of players not wearing masks, medical excuse or not?

I really think this will turn out to be no big deal, like it did in Michigan, but there are concerns. Hopefully coaches will try to comply.

I completely agree. Hopefully there is compliance, but I have my doubts. If there isn’t compliance, count on hockey getting shutdown in PA like so many other states.

Because just like the pa government, they can not force players to wear mask, so for liability reasons they send out an email stating the leagues position. It’s been proven people are getting bacteria infections from wearing a mask to long, hockey players are going to be wearing wet masks.

Bacteria infections from wearing a mask too long? It’s been proven? If you’re going to make that claim, provide a reputable source please. It’s interesting how healthcare workers have survived all these years from the bacterial infections.

  7. The PIHL has basically put it on the organizations to enforce.

“It is each Member Association’s responsibility to make sure its players and coaches are aware of this Face Coverings Policy and to disseminate within its organization any changes in this policy.
It is also each Member Association’s responsibility to require compliance with this Face Coverings Policy at all PIHL sanctioned events by its coaching staff and players to ensure the safety of the players, coaches, their families and the general public.”

So what happens when one team is wearing them and the other isn’t? The refs aren’t enforcing it (which I agree with). The game coordinators should have some responsibility in this. There is absolutely no guidance on what to do if the opposing team isn’t in compliance. It also should not be the responsibility of the rink to police this. I see this getting ignored and getting ugly.

  8. It’s not a rink thing, regional thing, league thing... it’s a STATE ORDER. That means everyone will have to comply or sports are very likely to be shutdown.

    https://www.health.pa.gov/topics/disease/coronavirus/Pages/Guidance/Universal-Masking-FAQ.aspx

Does the Order apply to athletes and sports activities?
Yes. Everyone who participates in sport activities including coaches, athletes (including cheerleaders), and spectators must wear a face covering, such as a mask, unless they fall under an exception in Section 3 of the Order.

Indoors: Coaches, athletes (including cheerleaders), and spectators must wear face coverings, when indoors and where another person or persons who are not members of the individual's household are present in the same space, irrespective of physical distance. This includes while actively engaged in workouts, competition, and on the sidelines, etc.

Outdoors: Coaches, athletes (including cheerleaders), and spectators must wear face coverings if they cannot maintain sustained physical distance from persons outside of their household. This includes while actively engaged in workouts, competition, and on the sidelines, in the dugout, etc. If sustained six-foot distancing can be maintained, face coverings may be removed when outdoors.

  9. What started as a weak topic (Icemen - why? should really be “who cares?”) actually turned into a decent discussion. Now it’s devolved into basically insinuating that other posters are pedophiles and we have others liking that. You’re the ones who are sick minded.

Telling people how Covid-19 is such a weak, wimpy virus will surely help the grieving families of our quarter of a million people that have died as a result of contracting it. It surely won't help prevent more infections & more deaths. History will not be kind to those that have downplayed the severity.

So please tell us - why the new profile name with the “a” added to the end?

Wow, you nailed it! I hope you are right about the lawyers researching it. Seems pretty clear to me! If the 25 limit is unconstitutional were is the problem with playing regular Hockey. I would be asking for my money back if my kid played on a PAHL team that is going to follow the 25 limit.

The 25 limit is also what the PIHL is following for JV and MS hockey at this point. If PAHL does the same, it would likely be a league decision that all teams have to follow, rather than each team or org deciding how they want to play.

  12. Two interesting paragraphs from the article:

“If the charge is, that there are things that don’t make sense, I’m guilty,” Wolf said. “What we’ve done is work with organizations…to see if we can figure out what is a more sensible policy. Sometimes we disagree, but that sounds like one that is, in fact, inconsistent.”

Wolf said his administration would continue working with organizations to try and make sure “that we are consistent and doing the right thing.”

Check out the “Let Hockey Play” movement on the Atlantic district’s website: https://www.atlantic-district.org

So now I’m going to be blunt. WHERE IN THE HELL IS MIDAM? WHY ARE WE SEEING NO EFFORT BY OUR PA MIDAM REPS TO WORK WITH AND EDUCATE OUR LEGISLATURE? Thankfully the affiliate representing the eastern part of the state is actually trying to get this situation fixed and we will benefit if that happens!

Guess what, we pay USA Hockey and affiliate fees so situations like this are addressed. I hope that I’m wrong, but it looks like MIDAM has failed us up to this point.

  13. I’m not sure that it’s possible, but I’d like to hear some opinions without getting into politics, or rink or organization bashing.

We all know the current mandates and the potential adjustments that are being proposed for how hockey will be played this season, at least until some of the restrictions are lifted in our favor.

We also know that there are a few rinks in the area that are operating “business as usual” for the most part - 5v5 games, full benches, and no spectator limits.

So, is this a problem, or will what they are doing actually help us move forward and get some of the restrictions lifted? When you see well publicized events happening, such as the soccer tournament, Trump rally in Latrobe, protests, etc, that don’t abide by the mandates, it makes me think that it gives those rinks and orgs a leg to stand on if anyone actually tried to take legal action.

The USA Hockey/MIDAM statement on not sanctioning games really only seems to be a legal CYA on their part. They are discouraging going against the state mandates, but does anyone really believe the games being played aren’t going to “count” towards MIDAMS? As someone mentioned earlier, is anyone really enforcing that? This isn’t meant to bash MIDAM, but do we really think they are going to look at LiveBarn (where available), check scoresheets for reduced rosters and MYHockey for reported games to decide if it should be sanctioned or not?

I won’t be surprised if those not following the rules come out as the winners in this whole scenario. Thoughts?

  14. It’s really not about PAHL or PIHL going against what the governor has ordered. These leagues could, but it doesn’t change that USA Hockey/MIDAM won’t sanction the games that are played because they don’t meet the state’s requirement. Parents may not care about the USA Hockey implications, but the associations, leagues and rinks do. Pushing for a change in the state mandate seems to be the only solution.

  15. It’s great that there is a legislative push for changes. However, I’d like to see school gyms, fields, and of course rinks be put in the same category as “indoor recreation and health wellness facilities”, instead of “indoor gatherings”. If this happens, nearly all of the issues go away.

    • Indoor Recreation and Health and Wellness Facilities (such as gyms and spas) Open at 50% Occupancy with Appointments Strongly Encouraged; Fitness Facilities Are Directed to Prioritize Outdoor Fitness Activities

That makes sense, but it seems like a hard thing to draw these fine lines and say this rink is better suited than this rink for these rules. It's like saying that the speed limit for Jeeps is 45 in the same place that it is 65 for cars that are less prone to rollover. I get what you are saying, but I think these finely targeted rules will cause more anger than satisfaction even if they are geared toward common sense. I don't have a solution to this. Things are just so complicated right now and I just don't sense any strong leadership from anyone.

Sorry - I wasn’t clear. I wasn’t suggesting different rules for every rink. I’m talking about indoor venue size, regardless of if it’s sports related. But to use sports as an example, a volleyball or basketball team plays in a smaller venue and playing area than a hockey rink. Why shouldn’t the capacity be scaled to venue size?  I get that it means more people, but a bigger area should be able to handle more people. That was the argument with the car show. Yes, it was outside, but there was enough space to maintain social distancing.

  17. I haven’t seen anything official from MIDAM yet, but my understanding is that USA Hockey and MIDAM won’t sanction any games held in states that have restrictions in place. So no sanctioned games in PA because of the 25 max indoor mandate, but OH can because their state doesn’t have the same limits.

I get that there needs to be some limitations, but this blanket rule is too broad. Size of the venue and playing surface should be part of the equation.

  18. The only thing that is certain is continued uncertainty. Our family is all in with a school team, two PAHL teams and an independent team. We believe the independent team is the most at risk due to the out of area travel. Yes, we are definitely taking a financial risk, but that is a choice each family has to decide if they are willing and able to make.
