The hockey talent in Toronto is at a whole other level than it is in Pittsburgh.

Obviously. What I'm asking is why would it hinder the development of a 9 year old to play with all 9 year olds in Pittsburgh, but not hinder his development if he lived in Toronto? Other than the broad skill level of all of the kids, what is the difference?

I am asking this question sincerely - are you saying that there are high school games played on the Stadium Rink at ISC? That's hard to believe for a number of reasons, by far the most significant of which is the fact that it isn't regulation sized. The neutral zone is so short that staying onside is a serious challenge in breakaways when you first start playing on it.

Plus when Pittsburgh doesn't really have a winter, like this year, the front corner ice is awful.

No, I don't believe high school and Foxes games are played on the Stadium rink, but practices are held on it.

Here’s the best part, if rmu didn’t buy the rink it was going under. That place loses money every year. It was also built on a nuclear waste dump. The first 2-3 years the building was there you were told not to drink the water or fill water bottles.

I like to think the extra radiation in the water there gave me super powers when I played.

50% of their revenue stream? Inline hockey isn't bringing in 50% of ISC's revenues. And the new D1 rink can still be used by amateur/HS ice hockey teams.

Lol why does that matter? They'll put the D1 facilities where the new rink is.

Every single RMU in-house team uses the outdoor ice rink for their practices and games. There are 250 mites alone each paying upwards of $750 per season. Then squirts through bantams which is at least $1k per kid. Not too mention it's being used for Foxes, as well as Montour/North Hills/Moon HS teams. That single outdoor ice surface probably generates the Island Sports Center about 2 million every season, and I am more than likely on the low side of that. Plus add on all the inline teams that use the other rink. Do you honestly think the RMU D1 team brings that kind of money (or would with more seating) to the facility? Eliminating those outdoor surfaces would be absolutely detrimental to RMU ISC business model and to Pittsburgh area youth hockey. There is no way they would allow that to happen.

I've heard rumors that they're getting rid of the outdoor rinks at ISC and putting in bowl seating for RMU's D1 teams.

There is absolutely no way they would eliminate 50% of their revenue stream on those two outdoor surfaces to create more seating for the D1 team. Not to mention the outdoor rinks are on the complete opposite side of the facility as the Colonials rink. Please stop perpetuating ridiculously untrue rumors.

This is a really good point about the # of teams a given organization is going to field and the amount of ice time that is available.

North Pittsburgh was mentioned earlier and they are fielding 6 teams at 10U, 6 teams at 12U, and 5 teams at 14U.

Arctic Foxes has 4 teams at 10U (including an '09 BY and a '10 BY), and 7 teams at 12U (including an '08 BY and an '07 BY)

Foxes has 3 sheets and all of their 10U and 12U teams typically practice twice a week, one being shared ice and one being full.

  6. Planet Hockey is offering a camp at Printscape Arena July 6th-10th. We're in Canonsburg too, so its right in our backyard. With the additional STP program they offer added on its 3+ hours of ice daily, plus dryland, lunch and video. Not really sure what to expect, but I signed my '13 up a couple of weeks ago.

We're doing Mite 3x3 at Southpointe and it's been okay - more to get some ice time, but the skill level is varied and also there isn't any goalies so the scores are using in their 20s.    Goalies I think can play for free if there are any interested out there.     We might consider trying out RMUs next year.

My 2013 son loves playing at RMU. We also live in Canonsburg. I hated everything about the way things were run at Southpointe (learn to play program, not Rink Rats) so we decided to check out RMU. SO glad we did. The summer 3V3 is great. $99 for 10 games. Games on Sunday afternoons. They break the mites into 4 tiers based on skill. Some of the in house teams stick together for the summer, some (like my sons team) are formed from individual players who's in house teams did not have enough interested players, and then there are some other teams from outside organizations like South Hills Panthers etc. Overall the games have been close. Cross ice and goalies in full gear. Scores like 7-4, 9-6. My son is really enjoying it and because he is younger and less skilled I truly think he is benefiting from playing "up" so to speak. He scored twice yesterday too actually. You might want to give them a call, I believe there are some teams in tier 1 and 2 that have openings.

  8. Excuse the ignorance as my kid is still a mite however we were watching a PAHL PeeWee game today and something happened that confused me. Team A took a minor penalty and while on the penalty kill they cleared the puck all the way down the ice. As Team B was going to retrieve it the linesman blew the whistle and called it icing. The faceoff came all the way back and was in Team A’s defensive zone. I was confused but figured maybe he forgot it was a power play and accidently called icing and I chalked it up to that. Until it happened another 6 times in the span of the 2 minute infraction. Not one single parent or coach said or did anything. This was my first time watching a PAHL game so I am asking is this normal? I mean WTF? What would be the purpose of doing this? It slowed the game down and made no sense to me. Calling icing on the short handed team during a penalty kill. First time in my 30 years of watching hockey I’ve ever seen it.
