  1. We participated at the 18u tournament for Central. Got bronze on a tie breaker to the west. Here is how it stacked up

North Team - some college kids (ACHA mostly) some T3 kids and a mix of skill form Wilkes Barre area. Lost big to East, pretty big to Central, and beat West

West Team - Similar mix bit more skill from around Pittsburgh area. Beat central 5-4, lost big to East, and lost to North

Central - ACHA kids from Mercyhurst, Kids from Icemen, some AA, and a mix of others.  Lost to west by a goal, beat Central pretty big, and lost 6-4 (with EN)

East - Basically entire team was Jr. Flyers and Genesis. Kids said team was built two months prior and had been practicing. It showed.

Our central team after two games really blended and gave them a heck of a game.

This tournament is huge for the Philly area apparently. Not so much elsewhere. Central had a hard time getting kids. Lots of counties but really only four or five actually have hockey. The west has a large base to draw from but their isn’t anyway PPE or Esmark is going to let their kids play!

My son and the players really enjoyed it. I didn’t like the three game format. No playoff feel. Tie breakers decided 2-4.

Well now.... I started this one and went to Florida for a while.... Nice to see we discussed it without pissing in each others skates til now.... Not gonna get into the fauci covid deal cuz I need a new roll of tin foil.

Couple things to add to the real discussion:

1- Don't paint all parent coaches with the same brush. Many played into college and coached for a while before having a kid. I will say that there is a motivation for many of us parent coaches, that HAVE played, to try to shield our kids from those coaches that are absolute fusterclucks and have no idea how to teach skating, skills, or how to actually play the game. Something that I've noticed is that many of the better players ARE CONSISTENTLY the ones that had a parent that played and usually coached them for the first 12 or so years of their life.... or if not formally coaching,  spent a significant amount of time passing on the tricks of the trade to their kids (and had kids that would pay attention to what dad was teaching).

2- As you go from PAHL B level up through AA you transition from kids that just want to play hockey to kids that have the discipline and want to learn how to be a hockey player. The former does not posses the drive and work ethic needed for the AA and AAA levels and are normally quite happy on A minor teams. The problem is that we do not have enough kids that will put the effort in to reach their potential. Some of them have enough raw skills to make A Major teams where you have a mix of kids with varied potential and work ethic, or worse they have enough raw talent to get picked for a AA team where they proceed to either put out a half-assed effort in practice which hampers the development of the kids that do have the spin to win attitude and mess up the flow of drills simply by not skating 100% or worse intentionally mess up because - well practice sucks and they just wanna play games. They have no intention or clue about being a team player. My kid started as Mite B and ultimately plateaued as one of those bubble players with tier 1 legs and hockey sense but tier 2 hand and went on to D3 college. No matter the team level I heard complaints every year about (lazy) players that didn't put the effort into practices and those players consistently showed as lack of discipline, effort, (or skill) during the games.

I now return you to your biomedical debate.

I agree completely. My son is playing his last year. He’s a good player. Had opportunities when he was younger but didn’t want to completely commit in his mid teens. He wanted to live a life. He works hard to be good. Off ice. Skating. Spring etc. We started in a small org that completely met the lower floor discussion. He also plays baseball and I’ve coached that for years.
The difference for us has always been commitment level. Do you do at least some off-season. I’ve had baseball kids put their gloves and bats down at the end of the season and not touch them for six months. That’s okay if you are playing rec sports. It’s not okay that you have expectations of playing over others when you get older.

  3. In regards to the death Hess Ice Rink just spent four million dollars on upgrades. In the last five years their PAHL teams have almost doubled. They also added two co-op varsity teams, 2 JV, and 3 middle schools teams. Expectation is within 2 years a co-op will go pure then having 3 varsity programs.

That investment was a business decision based on increased usage.

I think that if some of the rinks are enforcing 25 and some are not, then someone whose home rink is enforcing 25 will tattle on the rinks that are not.

I guess they can tattle but that didn’t stop most rinks from saying they were recreation facilities and not bound by the 25. Teams were expected to abide by whatever rules. It means PIHL and PAHL may go back but tournaments and “scrimmages” will still happen 5 on 5

Didn't the Federal Judges ruling allow them to go back to regular hockey?  Don't they (USA Hockey, MidAM & Atlantic) have lawyers that can interpret the ruling as it pertains to youth Hockey?  Why aren't they coming out with some kind of statement?

I guess they don't want to make the lame duck governor mad!!!!

Because like all federal rulings it will be appealed and a stay will be issued. Current rules stay in effect until the Governor gives up or it gets to the Supreme Court. Neither of which will happen any time soon.

Those who filed this had no expectation of a quick answer but are trying to set a constitutional precedent as to government powers.

What are you talking about?  This was in regards to a Tournament Alpha Tournament Company was hosting. All I wanted to know was if they were following the mandates (which I think are silly)!  I wasn't stirring anything! Just a simple question.  I can go on live barn to see how all the other rinks in the area are playing except when they black them out like some rinks are doing. I like to watch games. Don't understand why Alpha does not have live barn.  There are probably 10 or so Organizations that skate out of Alpha why do you pick out SCIR?  Maybe you need to go to Step 4. Reread the full thread and figure it out.

I apologize. This showed up on the wrong thread.

    Agreed.

Only on this thread could bi-partisan support of this bill be passed off as “arm twisting“ and Democrats “promised to change their votes right now.”  @Novos51 I am sure you have proof of that or some insider information to back such a claim?

Politicians that don’t answer to their constituents get voted out of office.

If Wolf knew for sure that his veto would be overridden it makes no sense for him to jump on it immediately. It’s a loss for him.

I apologize I don’t have it handy but multiple D representatives that voted yes are now “studying the issue. Leadership positions within the caucus, campaign funding, submitting for state appointments, and other things are all part of the arm-twisting.

If any of this surprises you then you really haven’t paid attention to current or 250 years of American politics.

I offer no guess as to if this veto will stand or not but I’m fairly certain some votes will change.

I bet some of the legislature chickens out and doesn't override the veto but we will see.

I guarantee you, and I have a fair share of experience in state politics, that some of the Dem representatives voted yes to assuage their voters. They are being arm twisted and promised to change their votes right now.

Yeah, like when a Renegades team rolls into a PAHL game with SCIR jerseys/shells/socks but all the kids have red helmets on.  Pretty sure that red isn't in the SCIR color scheme.  Is SCIR used as a fundraiser for the red helmet crew?

I’m sure as a member your could request to look at the books and have that question answered outside of this board.

  10. I think the push should be pods as defined above. Football is okay with 22 players on the field.

    Pod 1 - Home team bench (<25)

    Pod 2 - Visiting team bench (<25)

    Pod 3 - Ice 12-13

i agree on people fleeing  because you won’t get any kind of a discount

    Assume 3 lines (3 D pairs) 6.5 minutes in a 20 minute half

45 minute game 15 minutes or so a game

That’s a significant reduction in ice time

They did this in 3 on 3  9 skaters

Lots of kids just didn’t play

I don’t know much about youth football, could someone clarify what ages ? Is this like little league baseball ?

youth football Canceled - the sport most western pa folks think as untouchable. does youth hockey get canceled ? i was told about a varsity hockey tournament next weekend in cranberry that just had its rules changed - 4 on 4 (9) skaters per team & no contact. Why play the game at this point ? That’s not hockey.

    https://www.wtae.com/article/western-pennsylvania-youth-football-league-2020-season-canceled/33500454#

Youth football can start as early as six depending on the league. Ages go until junior high.

  12. For 3 on 3 at RMU they are using the 25 spectators rule. They have asked players to come dressed, limited teams to 9 skaters and a goalie, and only one spectator per player.

Last couple games we were at with younger teams (14u I think) security had to actually thin out the crowd as the spectator limits weren’t being followed. I understand why a rink may just ban spectators as I suspect constant drama in limiting it.
