Danner, what do we know about Chatham?  Is it a good program?  I know they are D-3 and don't offer athletic scholarships, but is the level of competition good?  How would they stack up against Pitt, Duquesne or IUP?  Just curious! Also will RMU be back next year?  Haven't heard anything about them.  I see that Chatham plays their home games at Hunt Armory. Haven't been there yet.  Will it continue to be a thing for the winter months only?

RMU already announced that men's and women's hockey will be back for the 23-24 season. First home game for both teams is October 7th.

I played somewhere outside in what I believe was in Washington county that had fence as the “glass”. Does anyone remember where that rink may have been?

I remember that rink as I played there as well. I think it was in the park next to the Lew Hays ball field where they play the Pony League World Series. I also remember a rink in Bridgeville that had concrete block walls instead of boards. I think it is a roller rink now.

Ive been saying for years that refs are increasingly loosing control of games and spectators.. no one wants to ref cause parents are assholes, well then maybe the refs should just start tossing everyone out that starts causing any issue immediately.. Zero tolerance..if you yelling negativities your out, 1st time they hear it. after asshole parent gets tossed 4 games in row maybe they will keep there mouth shut..

Im not blaming the refs but they ultimately have the power to stop the game and toss the parents.

I 100 percent agree adults need to set a better example, it starts in the stands with the parents period.. If you cant handle a competitive, aggressive sport dont come watch. IDK.. It take 2 assholes to start a fight, maybe be the better person and ignore the 1st asshole.. you wanna stop it? IGNORE THE ASSHOLE, DONT BE ONE TOO!

I dont have the answer, seems common place for everyone to just want to fight, everyone is so entitled these days they think they cant treat others like shit. total lack of respect for others has gotten out of hand.

someone said about asshole kids always have asshole parents, it starts at home.. kids act like there parents. def some truth to this, they are a product of their everyday life. hard to blame the kids when adults act like kids.. that said this kid should have never let this emotion go from ice to stands. that just cant happen.

it starts with adults being better people period, at home at games at life..

we have gotten so soft as a society that everyone is so fed up and pissed off we wanna fight instead of fix the issues.. cant scold little johnny for doing something wrong we might hurt his feelings so we will let him do whatever he wants and if you dont like it we will fight.. its exhausting..

    BE BETTER

If paid security guards won't toss fans, why would a referee want to do that? I was at a game a few years ago at the RMU Island Sports Center where there was a fight in the stands. The security at that game, an RMU police officer, refused to break up the fight. Instead, he called the Neville Township police department to come and take care of the situation. When I asked him why he did not want to get involved, his response was "I will not risk my badge over a high school hockey game."

There are some good ones such as the Allegheny County sheriffs who work at Ice Castle and the security at Southpointe. The majority of the security guards at the games are nothing more than spectators who get paid to watch the game.

  4. I turned on ESPN last night and saw they were broadcasting a high school football game. Two teams from Alabama were playing. After that game ended, they broadcasted a high school football game from Utah. Both games had fans in the stands including student sections. Cheerleaders were on the sidelines and there were marching bands. I wondered how these 2 states were able to live semi-normally but PA can't. Then I searched the internet to see who their governors were. Now I know.

    Truth.

I attended numerous Three Rivers Classics when they were held at Consol.  RMU was the host team while Yale, St. Cloud State, UMASS Lowell, Bowling Green, Boston College and Penn State were attendees.  The crowd sizes were decent at first, then became a disaster every year and if you waited a month or so after tickets went on sale, they could be had on Groupon at a fraction of face value.

Each year the tournament was played the attendance was less and less.  Sad, but true in that this area does not support college hockey.

    https://www.rmusentrymedia.com/sports/mens-hockey-schedule-2019-2020/

In the beginning, the tournament was run by RMU. They handled everything. The first year that Penn State played in the tournament, the arena was nearly sold out. The Penguins saw the success and decided they wanted to run the show. It has been going downhill ever since.

  6. From the latest PIHL email. Some good stories to be shared.

Some uplifting stories related to the value of sportsmanship and the spirit of interscholastic sports from the past week in the PIHL:
    • After making 51 saves in a 7-1 loss to Morgantown, McDowell Varsity goaltender gave a high-five to every player of both teams as they exited the ice after the game!
    • A fundraiser by Canon-McMillan generated $567 for the "Jack's True Grit" scholarship fund, in memory of Cathedral Prep player Jack Shoenig!
    • West Allegheny and Montour participated in National Wreaths Across America Day on Saturday by laying wreaths on tombstones at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies!
    • Pine-Richland conducted a "Share the Warmth" drive last week to collect items to donate to the Light of Life Rescue Mission on the North Side of Pittsburgh.  The many blankets, socks, hats, gloves, and thermal layers gathered through the drive will be delivered by the PR players to the shelter next week to help the homeless during the cold winter months

    Agree with @Scooby Doo

To boot, they were both Canadian teams playing in Pgh.  How dumb is that?

That's what happens when you go to a tournament. Can't tell you how many times my son's team went to an out of town tournament and played another Pittsburgh team. This Thanksgiving tournament is a pretty good tournament and well respected in the girl's hockey community. They draw a lot of teams from Canada.

That report is fascinating. It's incredible to me that there were so many issues with parents confronting officials directly, including, of all things, entering the referee locker room. What kind of idiotic behavior is that?

Honestly, it's amazing to me that we can even find officials to schedule, given the way they are constantly berated. It's been my experience that, in the vast majority of situations where parents complain about calls either made or not made, I agreed with the officials.

I agree with you about being able to find officials. My son is now finished with his playing career and has become a referee. He enjoys it so far but I wonder if/when he will have enough of the parents and coaches and decide stop working games.

I found this statistic later on in the report:

    1. Over half of the officials who skated PIHL Varsity playoff games in 2016 were no longer skating PIHL games by the 2019 playoffs.

Regarding the posts about the Norwin-Sewickley Academy game:

It’s very unfortunate when there is a lopsided game. It doesn’t benefit either team. But please don’t believe that this win by Norwin was the biggest lopsided game ever. Though it’s interesting to know that if this was a tournament game where goal differential mattered then this wouldn’t be an issue. Gotta love double standards.

So by the reasoning pointed out so far, along with Norwin, the coaches of Meadville (a 17-0 win) Fox Chapel (17-2 win) TJ who’s had a few blowouts and others - all have no class and are poor sports??? I’m not saying anything about these coaches or teams, just pointing out that Norwin is not alone being in the uncomfortable position of dominating a game

Its so easy for people to point the finger and call names. Look at the box scores. SA had 12 shots. Norwin had 58. Norwin could have had a lot more shots and more goals but they did draw back. 3 JV Call ups had considerable ice time. Top lines were rested and broken up.

There was little to no cheering after the 5th goal except a little chatter for a player who had the opportunity to score his first goal of the season.

The SA goalie made some great saves and played a heck of a game but it’s ignorant to think that Norwin played that game to run up the score.

Could the coach have done more? Yes. He could have told two lines to go to the locker room or the snack bar after the first period. He could have told 5 of his skaters to go to the SA bench and play for them.  Is this a hallmark movie or a hockey game?  He could have played 5 on 3, but would probably still been criticized and called arrogant. And if passing the puck 15 times before a shot or playing with less players didn’t make a difference - way to bring the embattled opponent down even more.

If a team shows up with 8 skaters - and if you look at their season they’ve played a few games with less than 2 full lines - I only hope they can get through this season and either co-op with another school or recruit or do something to put together a competitive team. It’s not comfortable to watch, win, or lose a lopsided game. Norwin parents and the coaches were not elated about that win. We felt sorry for the opponent, we hoped they had more scoring opportunities, and we hope that they are more competitive in their next matchup.

But the structure that exists of - no schedule changes or you will be fined - and the pressure that is placed on teams to show up when they are not prepared to compete are major problems. And how about the running clock? How about after 2 periods - just end the game so this isn’t an issue. Its not fun to watch a WPIAL football blowout either and they are way more common. If team is winning by more than 10 goals after 2, cut the ice and call it quits and go home early.

I hope the creepers, bullies, complainers, name callers, critics and all the decent people on this site can remember most games are good matchups. A few are ridiculously lopsided. What goal differential is acceptable and what goal differential is crossing the line? That’s a rhetorical question.

Lastly, and the main reason for my post is that the character of any coach or team should NOT be labeled by the score of one game. Shame on anyone that feels they have the right to make that kind of judgement in a public forum.

Look at the box score for the Norwin-Sewickley Academy game. The score was 12-0 at the end of 2 periods. In the third period, the 3 leading scorers for Norwin all had goals and Norwin outshot them 16-1 in the third period.

Now look at the box score for the TJ-Sewickley Academy game. The score was 11-0 at the end of 2 periods. There was no scoring in the third period and Sewickley Academy actually outshot TJ 11-4 that period.

One team had its top players scoring in the third period of a blowout while the other team sat its top players and let its 3rd/4th line guys play the final period.

    A big difference.

  10. Anybody get the newsletter that the PIHL sends out each week?

Per the PIHL By-Laws, there is no Board of Governors meeting in December.  However, the PIHL President has called a mandatory meeting for all association presidents on Wednesday, December 11, 2019, starting at 7:00 PM.

The sole focus of this meeting will be to review and address the alarming number of behavioral issues happening in conjunction with PIHL games, specifically the conduct of parents and spectators.  The PIHL will be implementing new measures in response to these concerns, which will be formally presented at next week’s meeting.  There will then be an open forum to collectively discuss any actions that can be taken by the individual organizations to further prevent these issues from negatively affecting our games and our players.

You and twoleftfeet are spot on.  Anyone who is confused by your posts or who thinks this isn't the root cause of 99% of the problems hasn't been paying attention.

Not too many players who could get a full NCAA D1 ride, and tryouts each year with a pro team while averaging less than a half a point a game as a forward.  Doesn't really affect me, I just hate it when the favoritism exists and people try to tell you it doesn't.

Most pro teams really don't support local youth hockey (not talking about money, they all give that).  This is one of the few that has actually damaged it.

College hockey players do not get full scholarships. The NCAA limits scholarships to 18 per team. Some conferences limit it to 14 per team. Based on a 30 player roster, each player is getting roughly 1/2 of a scholarship.

I think Eddie was making the point that the only way to have college paid for is to play Division 1.  If either of my kids want to play hockey in college I think it would be great if they could play Club or Division 3 hockey.

You mean partially paid for. Most people do not realize that a DI hockey scholarship is not a full ride. The NCAA limits 18 scholarships per team so most players are only getting 1/2 of their schooling paid for.
