And this, folks, is the problem. Selfishness. It permeates the lives of these "freedom fighters" in many aspects of life, so why would a pandemic be any different.

They didn't learn when the government let the bars and restaurants reopen to their demand, only to not follow guidelines and wind up in they same place we were. Hopefully the lesson was learned by the majority.

If sports get stopped, this attitude is the reason.

Looks like the lesson was learned by the fact that the numbers are coming down now. Hardly Selfishness on my part. The only selfishness is that I appreciate the fact that I am free to make my own choices. To listen to the facts and make a rational reasonable decision. I'm hardly a "freedom fighter" but I do like to listen to all sides. Haven't been to a bar or restaurant. I assume the people that did go knew the risks. It's called freedom to chose.  Take it away and I might as well live in China or Russia. NO THANKS.

No they don't understand the risks.  If they did, they wouldn't sue because they stuck a knife in the toaster and electrocuted themselves, or spilled their hot coffee on themselves in the McDonalds drive through, and the don't understand the difference between walking past someone with Covid in the grocery store vs. sitting near them in restaurant for an hour and a half.

You are right and that's probably why I get so mad. I can't figure out what a rink would be liable for if a person thought they got covid there. How could they prove it?  Anyway as you stated people sue for a lot less. Sad world we live in.

I agree. I could see coaches just telling kids/parents to just lay low and not come to practice if feeling sick because testing positive could get their program shut down. These kids may never get tested but still have it. I doubt this situation would be common but it probably goes on a little. Also...Contact tracing isn't that reliable. There have been various news reports of people not cooperating with contact tracers. Some reports say that half the people won't give up locations/contacts. Obviously, these tactics won't work if there is a major outbreak, but it could be keeping these small clusters of 2 - 4 people from reaching the news. The problem is that these 2 - 4 people could be spreading to the community and never be traced back to the source.

Last time I checked this was the USA not CHINA. People in the USA value their freedom and ability to move around as they please even if sometimes it means not having as much control over this virus. Don't you think by now everyone understands the risks involved with sports, and life in general? I know you will come back with the argument that kids are going to unknowingly give it to old people.  That's where the old people maybe should assume that everyone has it.  Especially if they are high risk. I made a decision to be around my grandkids knowing they are taking more risks.  It's a personal choice. That's why I like the USA. I'm free to make it.

What bothers me the most about the article, which as you point out is poorly written, is that it keeps saying "contact sports" are the risk when it looks like everyone who tested was on the same team. Sounds like partying in the hotel or riding a bus together more than the sport itself or why wouldn't other teams have gotten it?

Great points. I didn't even think of that when I read it.

OK. I know we'll never totally agree on this stuff. I respect that and your point-of-view. You also can't convince people not to be scared. Life will never get back to normal as long as so many people are (perhaps unjustifiably) afraid. They are not going to get over their fears because you tell them to. Less people will be afraid when cases/deaths decrease. We need to find the best plan to make that happen as quickly as possible or you will continue to deal with strict rules about playing sports or any other aspect of life.

I agree, I'm scared. I just want it to be over!  I know it's not going to happen anytime soon and that's I'm sure why I get so frustrated. Especially with the people who look for every negative article so they can point to it and say see I told you we are going to all have to shut down sports and life till we get a vaccine!!!!

I hear what you are saying, but it's too early to just give up. Europe got the infection rate down so no reason we can't. We can buy some more time until we get better treatments and better testing or even a vaccine. Perhaps those things will never come, but I think that they will in the near future. I know that people are running out of patience. I understand that. It's hard, but most things that are rewarding are hard to accomplish. Let's not give up so fast. It's only been 5 months. Talk to me in March and I may agree that we just can't go on like this anymore.

God bless you for having the patience to wait a year!  I don't have that kind of patience.  A year might be 10 percent of my life at this point.  Don't want to live it in the house! I haven't been out to eat dinner since March!  No bars! No parties! No Fun.

Anyone think we'll see more stories like this considering the real season hasn't even started yet?

I read the article. Another scare tactic!   How many are some? 2,5,8,10?  shouldn't they get their facts down before they report that "some" players had it?

The way I see it is it's not going to be wiped out by trying to keep kids from playing sports. We all have to know the risks and make our own decisions.

Well, we can't simply accept that we will have 1,000 people per day die of this in this country. Many will say this it's mostly old people, so who cares. There are still a lot of people that do care. Life would not be nearly as good without all the old people in my life.

Agreed, I am one of those old people. I also feel like this is just dragging out the inevitable. This virus is going to be around. Even if they develop a Vaccine that works. How fast can they get it to enough people that I can come out of the house again?  Is life worth living if you are scared of catching the virus?  Something is going to kill me and I'm not trying to speed it up. I just want to go back to enjoying life.  Watching the grandkids play was enjoyment. Now I watch what I can on live Barn. Just not the same.

If we get to play, it's just going to be weird and hard. We can expect these rolling quarantine black outs like SF, particularly with back to school. Rescheduling games is going to be interesting. Think about it.... that's potentially four games if a team had to quarantine. And then if it is one of those independent teams that schedules 4 PAHL games in a weekend....bleh. It will be interesting to see if a season can be completed.

Is what MLB is doing better than nothing at all?  I wonder how long it will take until this is no longer a big deal?  We will never reach a herd immunity. Sooner or later are we just going to have to accept it as a part of life?  Is swamping the hospitals with patients still the main concern?

This will happen all year until it all gets shut down.

    Two week’s quarantine coming.

Why does it seem to me that you would be very happy to have everything shut down!  What's your reason for being the gloom and doom squad?

  11. 2 minutes ago, Quinlan2020 said:

That makes sense. I give them credit for being cautious. My whole worry around letting these teams play is that the people in charge with throw caution to the wind. A lot of the rules/precautions seem sensible, but there is just so much rhetoric referring to how overblown & hyped the pandemic is.

And people like Peter the Puck are causing people to feel that the whole thing is overblown & Hyped with their overblown reactions to the situation. I'm sure he would gloat and be happy if all the rinks shut down because of 2 kids coming back from vacation.

Just kicking the can down the road holding out slim hope that everyone can get their act together by then. The Fall season is going to be more of a challenge to avoid problems than the Summer has been.

Do you think games are more of a challenge than practice? Hasn't practice been going on for weeks now?  The potential problem I see is that people will get complacent again once the numbers improve and think that it's not as big a threat. I just hope associations don't panic if a few kids come up positive, Doesn't mean you have to shut everything down again.

You're just making the case stronger for those that would like to see the season be cancelled. I would like to see some form of a season with strict rules followed, but it's hard to convince myself that everyone will be on board with these rules.  As a result, I would rather have the season to be, at least, delayed until January and see if there is any glimmer of hope at that point.

What's going to be different in January. I would think that after 2,5 months of not many problems at the rinks we can move forward smartly. Can't keep delaying things with the hope that it will get better!

Who are you to “call someone out” you don’t know anyone’s life and medical history.

No reason you need to be at the rink if you can't wear a mask or social distance. Why ruin it for the kids if you bring it to the rink or get it and blame the rink.  If you have a medical history I would think you would be smart enough to stay home.

And you know there will be those that don't follow rules. That's the problem. That's also why it's so hard to get back to something close to normal. Almost nothing would need to be closed with masks, social distancing, hygiene & no parties. I applaud you for calling out the idiots. I just fear that those idiots will feel that you are getting in the way of their "freedom" and will be willing to fight for it.

Hockey people must be doing something right. No major outbreaks reported for almost 2 months. Same with PIAA sports. That's why I don't understand Wolfs statement last week.

I always kind of laugh at the temperature checks. I would really like to know how many people with fevers are actually trying to go anywhere at this point. Shame on them if they are. Temperature checks can't hurt, but it's a very weak layer of safety.

So what do you recommend for safety? What can society do to get moving again? Or should we all just shelter till there are no more cases?

  17. 13 minutes ago, Quinlan2020 said:

You're right, but I just don't see how their attorneys would advise them to keep going based on the states recommendation to stop. What would happen if there is an outbreak that gets linked to a serious illness or death? There will be legal ramifications. There will be more of a chance for outbreaks once schools start opening and people start gathering more indoors during colder weather. Things have been pretty quiet so far, but the fall will likely be different.

So the waivers that are being signed at the rinks aren't worth the paper they are written on!  Do you think the reality is the legal ramifications or the health risk?  Can't we associate legal ramifications to anything we do? Drive a car, cut the grass, visit the neighbor? Where does it end?   How long do we wait around hoping for something different to happen. What's going to be different January 1, 2021?  How does that become the magic date that sports can begin again? Or is it just another delaying tactic? At some point doesn't the human race have to decide to exist with Covid-19?  And why do they report total cases like everyone still has it!  Wouldn't the public be better served to know how many active cases there are?  I believe this is in large part a media perpetuated pandemic,

Midgets and bantams are definitely not having placements. I thought I had heard that the squirts and peewees might still have some placement games, though.

You would think that the PAHL would provide some (any) information on their website to let people know what is going on.  How many organizations have not held tryouts yet? These delaying tactics with sports are very annoying. It just seems that no one wants to be the bad guy to shut things down.  All I know is that I have seen a lot of Hockey all over SW PA since the end of May and have only heard of 2 incidents in regard to hockey players having Covid.  I can't imagine the PAHL shutting down.  Would all of these organizations that have had fees paid in and ice time rented have to refund money?  I can't help but see a big mess.  I used to be optimistic! Now not so much.

  19. Dear SAHA Families:

The SAHA Board of Directors was notified that an on-ice participant from the Bantam 2007 team tested positive for COVID-19.  The participant was on the ice at Printscape Arena on August 4th from 8:30-9:25PM and August 5th from 5:40-6:35PM.  The participant has not been to the ice rink since August 5th.

The Bantam 2007 practice schedule has been revised and the Board will update our families as further information becomes available

This is the second incident I have heard of with Covid at a rink.  I hope they follow up with how the rest of the team is doing.  I know when they first opened they were doing temperature checks at the door. Don't know if they are still doing that. Obviously a good thing that they are making people aware of the situation.
  20. When you are a D-1 program Coach and your job depends on how much you win your goal is always to get the best available players. I'm sure Robert Morris would love to have a home grown team as I'm sure it would create a lot more interest in their program. But the reality is that maybe they can get  1 or 2 kids from the area a year. If it's a good year.

All D-1 sports are like that. How many Pitt Basketball players are from SWPA? Football players?  Certainly a few at best.  Just the reality of big time College Athletics.

  21. Governor Tom Wolf

    @GovernorTomWolf

There are widespread rumors that I will soon be announcing a statewide school building closure or cancelling classes this fall. I want to be clear: I am not closing school buildings or cancelling classes.

Wolf just tweeted that out and with the PIAA trying to go forward it gives me more confidence that there might be a PIHL season.  I think it all depends on if the curve stays flat and we don't have clusters at rinks in the fall and winter.  Masks are here to stay for a while.
