Slippery Rock and other State Schools are hurting for students.  It is mostly due to demographics.

    https://www.mcall.com/news/pennsylvania/mc-nws-pa-state-colleges-20200716-uptvrbh3wrcnjf4oowfvlt2hqi-story.html

This, plus what is happening due to Covid, is a great example of why kids looking at colleges should not choose a school based on sports.  They should love the school first, and the sports is a kicker.

It's a shame that such advice is necessary. It's hard to convince young people to prioritize accordingly when we prop up athletes higher than the many in professions that protect us and save lives. We, as parents, often go to such great lengths to make sure our kids are better hockey players while shrugging off any struggles they are having academically. It's the wrong message. I wonder if SRU was RPI. I kind of doubt the same offenses would result in such punishment. It's mostly about the money when it comes to consequences. Death penalty for the little guys and a slap on the wrist for the big guys. Penn State Football didn't get anything close to this for one of the worst systematic offenses in history.

Lots of high schools have now canceled winter sports until the third week of January now. But this is going to conflict with track, baseball, and other spring sports if extended

Yes. Conflicts for sure. I would love to get back to having conflicts in my life. Too many places to go would be wonderful. I think of all the things I used to complain about and how I would welcome them back.

Season is done, just face it. Cases are worse then last year. USA Hockey has already started pushing back Nationals.

I doubt it. I see no reason that the season can't extend into April & May. That would be good for the rinks instead of charging reduced rates during the lower demand part of the year.

Had our monthly meeting/call last night for our school program.  Our AD noted that he will be recommending that our district pause all sports until  at least January 18th rather than the 4th at a school board meeting next week.

I’m beginning to think that even 1/18 is optimistic

I agree. Say things start to get better in a few weeks. Wouldn't the state just say that the restrictions are working now so we need to stay the course? Maybe by February we'll have a good bit of the most vulnerable population vaccinated, which will begin to reduce hospitalizations. That's even optimistic considering that the current vaccine takes about a month to provide protection, I don't think most restrictions will continue far into February with better times on the horizon by then. January is promising to be the worst month.

I don't believe that on the ice, in fleeting moments of closeness, in a big arena, that there is enough viral load to easily infect anybody.

Locker rooms, carpooling, sleep-overs, the kids' parents taking advantage of "freedom" to go to bars, restaurants, and being generally careless is where I would wager players are getting it.

I think if kids were getting it on the ice, hockey teams would be a house on fire.

Honestly, why bother? There is incredible inconsistency in the enforcement of the restrictions. Some rinks won’t take the chance of getting caught, while others have been told by local law enforcement that they won’t cite them if they are open.

If everyone continues to do whatever they want, the numbers won’t go down, and this shutdown will just be extended. People need to be wearing masks anytime they aren’t with people in their household, and respect each other’s personal space and we wouldn’t need a damn shutdown. No one has to stay home if we do a few simple things. But people are just too selfish to do that. Don’t inconvenience them. It’s everyone else’s responsibility to do what’s right.

Everyone who is complaining about hockey and other sports being shutdown, ask your kids if they are wearing masks in the locker room. You may be hoping they are, but guess what - the majority aren’t. It’s a big joke to them. The players are missing games, but the downstream impact to the rinks, leagues, organizations, team managers, etc is huge. Is it worth it?

Exactly right. So many things can be done safely, but people just won't take any precautions for whatever reason. As a result, we all suffer these restrictions. My kids have not been permitted to use the locker rooms this season. I made that decision even before several kids told mine how masks weren't popular in the locker rooms. My kids enter almost fully dressed, tie their skate in the lobby and have to sit away from the others on the bench. Luckily, our teams have small rosters that allow the bench space.

Yeah that looks like 50% capacity. I feel bad for the people who are following the rules and kind of getting screwed on this. Speaking of following the rules, at least two rinks are still allowing private ice rentals and/or adult league hockey.

Why not identify these two rinks?

LOL. Obviously you haven't been reading my posts over the last ten months. I'm not at all with Quinlan about COVID. I only meant that there was a good bit of grousing about rinks staying open illicitly back the last time.

Where exactly am I with Covid? I don't claim to be anywhere with Covid. I say I am not qualified to make decisions on it. Others here think they know everything when they know about as much as me. I simply say it's best to trust experts in the field while others just cherrypick obscure opinions to convince themselves that they don't have to make any sacrifices for the sake of public health. I love hockey and I want my kids to play. I don't know what the risk of doing it is. I would feel a lot better about it if I knew that the adults in charge respected public health guidelines more. Some certainly do while others behave like it's 2019.

Times like these separate the kids that are serious from the ones that aren't at the higher age levels. I know my son is already planning his stepped up running and driveway workout regimen. There are going to be teams, in the A and B levels, who really fall off on the ice because of what their kids didn't do off the ice during this shutdown, especially with the holidays being in there.

Nice move to completely shut down the holidays, by the way. This is going to just kill businesses all over the state.

As we inch closer to a public health catastrophe, doing nothing would go down in history as a dereliction of duty. I say this knowing that these moves just may not help a all. But what if things get better in the next few weeks? Things stabilized late this summer after similar moves were made. None of us know how to handle this, but the people making the decisions are doing what they are paid to do. We all make bad decisions at our jobs sometimes even when we try our best. But we can't go to work and just do nothing for fear of making a mistake. The horrible part about all of this as the choices involved are all about deciding what will kill less people. Every decision involves people getting hurt. What a mess.

Thanks, I know you and me don’t see eye to eye on this, but thanks.  There would/may be some stuff available in the future but getting another business loan to start up a business now is just not a good idea right now, plus my heart really isn’t in it anymore.
My only real ask for some people on here is just think before they make comments like “shut down the bars, because this is something that is “not needed”.  Yes, the people who go to the bar can still get together with their friends to watch the game and drink at home.  The people who made their living serving those folks are the ones who suffer.

I just don’t like the government or other people deciding what businesses should and shouldn’t be allowed to open.  That is the scary part.

    Warning, you could be next.

I know that you despise me, but I hate to see the suffering that you outlined. This isn't fair at all. If this was D-day you would be one of the ones on the first landing crafts headed toward the beach. I can't say I know how you feel, My world has been adversely affected, but not nearly to the degree of many.

It's all shutdown till January 4th.  He didn't leave much out!  It will be interesting to see if all the Rinks obey the shutdown.

It didn't seem totally clear to me. Indoor gatherings limited to 10 now (down from 25), but sports venues were given a percentage occupancy exemption based on square footage a couple months ago, There was no mention of that. School sports are definitely shut down. It seems likely that rinks will be shut down if gyms are, but I think we still need some clarification.

It's not that anyone wishes that older people die, but I'm pretty sure if you asked the seniors of that age and older, that lived through WWII, gas shortages and maybe even the Depression, I'm pretty certain that the vast majority would want people to live their lives as well and not have all of these closures.

Plus, when things were barely open back in April/May, places like Home Depot and other stores were full of elderly people who were out and about.  If they were that scared or felt that the world needed bubble wrapped, they would have stayed home.

You are definitely correct about how most of the older people that I know feel. The health care workers wish people would modify their lifestyle a bit. Otherwise, they are the ones stuck in a horrible situation where they have to care for the sick with limited resources. They become over-worked, over-stressed & and they face more danger to themselves and their families. Restrictions are like chemo. Sometimes the patient dies, but the patient probably has no chance without it. Enforcing any restrictions now will be tough without any $ for those that will not be able to work or operate their businesses. I don't see how we can ask people to live without an income. The worst part about shutting down hockey is that the many people employed at the rinks will suffer. It's also hard to convince people to abide by restrictions when we don't even know if they will be effective. I get that. This is a complicated issue that has good arguments on both sides. The thing that I can't understand is how too many people just refuse to do the common sense things like wear masks & stop gathering. The big Halloween parties in my neighborhood were just ridiculous. Too many people just need to grow up.

can we keep discussions in this forum related to western pa hockey?   this + well wishes for Gov Wolf + politics should be moved to facebook/social media imho.    Seems like recently it's gotten derailed and needs admin moderation.    Yes, Covid-19 is a serious pandemic, but come on seriously guys.

It's easy for me to just skim over any garbage posts that have no relevance. Why don't you just try that instead of asking for some sort of censorship. Like fafa just said... Covid-19 directly affects the hockey world. If you don't want to discuss it.... Just ignore anything Covid-related and maybe you will feel better.

Masks aren’t required on the ice anymore for PAHL. There was an addendum added to the policy. Just on the bench and off the ice.

Yes. But PAHL will continue to recommend masking at all times per the PA Guidance. It also states that players must mask at all time at any venue that requires it. This may make things interesting by causing some division among players & parents.

How do I say this politely........you are full of shit.  I was there, kid. Played and saw games at Victory, Artic Edge / Coliseum and Novi rinks. All players were wearing masks.  Is it now time to confess that you weren’t there?

Confess? He will double-down. That's the tone that has been set by his cult leader. Never confess, never apologize & accuse others of what you are guilty of.

“Commies”........you clowns provide me with the laughs I need to help me get through this disaster.

Gotta laugh to keep from crying. The clowns think being a a tough guy is gonna make this disaster go away faster? No logic there? They just want to fight authority because it makes them seem macho. They just end up being miserable all the time at the expense of making their kids miserable as well.
