We were getting to a better place (at least in Western PA) back in Mid-June. Then came the Green Phase. It was downhill from there because bars opened & people decided that partying was OK again. We wouldn't be having much of a debate about schools & sports now if the Green Phase had not gone so poorly.

Yep, that’s what it’s all about, “partying”.  I guess you never thought of the guy who manages these places. Or the single mom I had to let go when we got closed, or the poor guy I had washing dishes, God only knows what he is doing now, probably back to dealing or most likely got busted doing it and now has no money to send his kids moms. That’s ok, cause the bars opening up was just about “partying”.

I never said any of that stuff. You definitely have a beef if your business is suffering due to restrictions. Somebody determined that bars needed to be shut down for public health reasons. It should be the responsibility of the government that oversees these decisions to compensate those affected. Shame on them if they are not doing that. I will be in your corner to fight for that.

Yep, I was threatened by 3 cops that if I opened up they would arrest me, yet I watch a whole bunch of cops watch a group of people set cars on fire and break windows and they do nothing! It is a said day in America I can tell you that. Oh and I am going to go back and find the post where you said the bars should be shut down, it was you I remember

Wow you don't get it!  How many people have had issue with your posts?  How many agree with you? You have your opinion and the rest of us have ours. That's all I am saying.

No this person just wants to tell others what to do, and doesn’t seem to understand the stupidity of it.

If they want their kid to play hockey, then they should send them to hockey. If they want to go out to eat, they should go out. If they want to stay home, stay home. If they want to wear a mask, wear one, if they don’t then don’t.
I like you hockeyisgreat just don’t get why some people feel the need to around telling others what to do.  Some people must be pretty bored....

I understand your frustration. I am not judging those that have truly suffered during this time. I hope you and your family get back on your feet. This board is about discussing the effects on hockey. It's a very minor issue compared to what you are going through. I am sorry. I have obviously offended some. It was never my intention to minimize any personal suffering.

No but you spout off crap like people shouldn’t be allowed to go to bars or restaurants, well guess what, there were a ton of us who used to make a good living In the hospitality industry until people like you came along and started telling others how to live.
Up until April I considered myself a pretty liberal guy.  I was all about letting people do what they want and I thought the Governor and others were for the “working man” and the other side was for the rich.  Now I see how it really is.  Yes I have been out of work, yes I lost my apartment, yes I moved to a different area to live with family to try to find work in a state that cares about people.  All I seem to be living for right now is November, so I can hopefully stick it to all those who voted to close stuff down.  Am I bitter? F yea I am, and I am sick and tired of PEOPLE LIKE YOU telling others how to live.

    My rant is now over....

My world isn't shut down. Almost everything is open. Life is just a little different now. There is really nothing that I can't do now that I could do before. It's just a matter of being a little careful for the good of all civilization. What Covid-related hardships are you having right now? The people that are out of work or have a failing business are suffering. Others are just being big babies about making some minor adjustments to their lives.

Really? Must be great to be you. My life sucks because of it. Me out of work since April and my wife cut back to 15 hours a week.  My world has been shut down. I stopped posting for the last few months cause I had to cancel my internet and I am at my sisters house now looking for work.  I have to be honest, I have been able to tolerate a lot of people on this site over the years, but the past few months reading what you have posted you are one of the few that makes me sick to my stomach

Little Johnny died? I thought it was like the flu.

What happens if Big Johnny dies because Little Johnny brought it home? What happens if Big Johnny then takes it to work and gives it to Mary and then she spends the rest of her life as an asthmatic? Maybe Mary and her family family signed the the same waiver and everything will be good.

Why not get liability insurance? It is relatively cheap to cover things that are such low risk.

My brother in-law died from the flu 6 years ago.  What’s your point?  You don’t think people can die from the flu?  He was 46 and very healthy.  The flu kills a bunch of people every year, so again what’s your point?

If any of you truly believe that any one entity including the governor has any say in this you’re blind. Lawyers control everything. The second people start raising hell about their kid not getting their senior season, every lawyer that represents every side of this is sending letters to each other strongly encouraging shut downs and non involvement. Nobody wants liability. But the problem governing bodies like the PIAA are having is that they don’t have good PR staffs. It’s over. You just haven’t been fully notified because of inadequate PR

Please see "other influencers" bending his ear.  I think we are saying the same thing.

I guess they're delaying for two weeks then gonna make a decision... looks like they wanna still go through will fall sports though.

Who is they?  The PIAA?  It sure isn't the Governor, he said he doesn't want to go through with fall sports.

Not trying to upset everyone, but what "they" want, doesn't matter.  It will be up to the government to decide if they will allow them or not.  Just like everything else, they say we strongly recommend you do things, until people don't do them, then they mandate.  The precedent has been set, in the end it is not the PIAA's decision if they will have sports or not.

@Eddie Shore Get ready, as you & I have said since april, sports are all about the be over. The piaa is going to decide all of pa’s fate, even club sports. There was only a handful of us from the start stating this. I think the @The King was also one as I got accused of being his alt account.

The way I read this was:

    1. Governor asked them to come up with a plan, they did, Governor said, "looks ok".  They thought they were good.

    2. Other influencers started bending the Governors ear say, "hey we need to lock down, non-essential activities like sports, etc..."

    3. Governor comes back and says, "hey this is a deadly virus, blah, blah, blah - everyone needs to do their part, blah blah, blah - I am strongly recommending no sports until 2021, blah, blah, blah.

    4. PIAA says, "where the heck did this come from?  You are changing the rules again?"

    5. PIAA sends out Twitter letter to calm the masses which states, "we did everything they said to do, now they are changing their minds, we don't like it, we will hold everything for two weeks until we meet with him and see if we can change his mind back".  I wish them luck.

Like I have said all along, we'll see...……………...

Pittsburgh City Schools just canceled sports until Jan 1st, 2022. This doesn’t surprise me though, The Pittsburgh Public School system is HUGE when it comes to party politics.

is carrick part of Pittsburgh City schools ? They have a co op hockey team with a few suburban schools, how does this effect the suburban schools that are still going ahead with sports ? (If they are) They play under the carrick banner hanging at ice castle.

    Jan 1, 2022?????

A recommendation is not a mandate.

Also, why the first of the year? If anything, the cases will go up and be worse because of the holidays and everything involved in that.

Yep, the Governors "recommendations" don't always happen :classic_biggrin:

    Again, we'll see...……………..

But he didn't specifically say "high School". Did he? It sounded like he said all sports

Correct, he did not (see article below), and a direct quote from the article:

Wolf said. “And we ought to do anything we can to defeat that virus, so anytime we get together for any reason, that’s a problem because it makes it easier for that virus to spread. “So, the guidance from us -- the recommendation is that we don’t do any sports until January 1.”

    https://wjactv.com/news/local/gov-wolf-recommends-no-pa-sports-for-the-rest-of-the-year

Hmmmmm, the Governor just came out and said he is recommending that "we don't do any sports for the rest of the year".  And we all know that when he recommends something that doesn't mean it will absolutely happen, oh wait yea it does.

I am sure that baseball and lacrosse will be exempt from this of course. :classic_biggrin:

Man, it sucks when I am right, now I know how the King feels...……….

Pitt’s D2 team folded this year. The D1 and boosters had to sell customized sublimated jerseys with the script logo (which are really cool) as a fund raiser. As an alum I wish the university supported the team more/at all. The lack of support goes back to the 90s at least.  They played at Neville in South Side then Warrendale. Talk about far. I think that if the university wanted to have a D1 NCAA team they could. As was mentioned with an on campus/near campus rink the walk up support would be good with students and adults, families, alum, hockey fans. I’d snap up season tickets.

I think Pitt’s ACHA 1 team was decent this year. I’ve seen some webcasts at Ohio U and Kent and the attendance is awesome. As far as announcing and live YouTube broadcasts go even WVU does that and has 2 camera angles etc and look at the dump they play in, they’re still trying to make it work. The D2 team plays in a pretty cool league with southern teams from MD, VA and NC.

I’m not sure where I’m going with this please don’t flame me haha but Pitt hockey could certainly fill a 3000 or so seat building if there was an NCAA team but with this AD/past ADs it’s all about football and basketball as with many FBS schools.

Sorry, but I don't see them fill 3,000 seats.  Like you said D2 folded and D1 had a bunch of players drop off.  There are tons of great players at Pitt and the majority don't tryout.  Like others have already said they have multiple kids playing on multiple teams, so they can't really attend games due to time constraints.  This leaves the casual Pittsburgh hockey fan, and they would rather go to a penguins game.  No flaming here, you are entitled to your opinion

  15. I understand.  It was in the works almost 5 years ago, and I agree that space is an issue in the city.  However, the parking issue could be addressed with a parking deck (obviously not talking about the armory here), but my kid has played at several rinks that were the top floor of a parking deck.  Anyone who has ever played against the Little Caps has been to their rink which is the top floor of a parking deck.

I have been to about a dozen OU games ( Ohio University ) and every game was a sellout.  It did not matter whom they played - strong student support because the rink is on campus and lots of moms/dads and kids at the games.

Pitt football attendance is a disaster also, and it does not help students have to take buses to the games at Heinz Field.  The college games I have attended - Penn State, Miami, OU and Bowling Green all have rinks on campus and have robust support from the students and neighboring residents.

No doubt that a rink on or very near campus would help with the students attending.  Others in the community will never support it as we have discussed in this thread and the other.  I know they were looking at the Armory at one time to split with Chatham, Pitt and Duquesne but it never seemed to get off the ground.

  17. Are we talking about their D1 NCAA Team or their D1 ACHA Team.  If you are talking about their ACHA Team, then I agree with you.  If you are talking about NCAA then sorry, I have to disagree.  Anyone who knows how NCAA hockey works knows that if you are offered an NCAA D1 position you are the best of the best, the top 1 or 2%, and chances are you may have already been drafted by the NHL before you start playing NCAA hockey.  For most players this means you were an absolute stud in AAA as a Peewee, bantam and first year of 16U.  You then got offered a spot in one of the very top Junior Leagues in US or Canada at the age of 16 or maybe 17.  You were then a top performer there as well, leading your team and league in stats.  Got drafted around the age of 19 or 20 (probably 4th round or later) and also got an offer from a top NCAA D1 program for when you turn 21.  That is a tall order!  and sorry, just not that many players in western pa that fit that bill.  The good local players wind up in ACHA D1 or D2, where as we said in the other post, no one cares about them anymore.

  18. Ah, don't get me started on Pitt.  The school absolutely hates the hockey club teams and gives them zero support.  Trust me, they would love to kick the hockey club out, and the club battles with the school constantly over stupid stuff (like uniform colors and the use of the cathedral image).

Go out on youtube and take a look at other schools like Dayton, Louisville or Ohio's broadcasts.  Multiple cameras, student announcers, interviews with players in between periods, and scores and graphics during the broadcast.  Then look at a school like Pitt and player who is a healthy scratch holding an iPad in the stands.  Embarrassing.

You can blame the schools for not marketing very well.

Big disagreement from me on this statement, sorry.  Blame the schools for not marketing well?  So, who in the Pittsburgh area that follows hockey can actually say, "gee, I didn't know of the NCAA programs at Chatham and RMU, or the ACHA programs at Slippery Rock, IUP, Cal, Pitt, Duquesne, RMU etc...."?

Nope, the problem with our college hockey in the area always has and always will be a lack of support by the community for anything to do with hockey that doesn't have the name Crosby are Lemieux attached to it.  Can't tell you how many times I had stood at Alpha years ago and heard kids coming out of the locker room saying, "hey dad look Duquesne is playing.  Dad's response, "come on son, lets go everyone is waiting for us over at Primanti's"!

Which really is part of my point. Obviously this is interesting information, but firstly it doesn't bear on hockey directly at all, and secondly it doesn't matter what PIAA says if the governor can shut everything down again at will.

Hockey and basketball are both close in, face-to-face sports that happen indoors on relatively small surfaces. I don't think we can learn anything from them saying golf can proceed.

Yes, you are correct.  That is the point, it really doesn't matter what the PIAA says, USA Hockey says, the rinks say the organizations say or what anyone else says.  They don't hold the authority anymore, the Governor will make the final decisions, and that can change direction at anytime.  The articles prediction means nothing.
