  1. Having a nice on campus facility would be huge for RMU.  While it won't make them a consistent power, it should get them to another level.  I went to school that has a NCAA D1 program and students lined up outside to get into each home game.  Granted, it is a larger school in a much stronger conference (CCHA at the time), but I can't see that happening if the rink was a 10-15 min drive off campus.

  2. This is their Junior Gold A team.  MN also has Junior Gold B.  From my understanding, these consist of players who did not make their Varsity or JV teams.  My son has played against a few of them and from what I have seen, the top JGA teams are typically competitive with WPA's top PIHL teams.

If you look at JGA MHR, Edina is ranked number one in MN and has a 88.91 rating.  They beat NA (88.46) in 2OTs, so I guess in this case, MHR is pretty accurate.

Hi PA Hockey—Would you know of, or possibly provide a link so we could be immediately directed to this High School Hockey Tournament?

I know that I’ve been seeing more and more tournaments in South Bend over the past few years.  From what I’ve seen, their facility looks really awesome. I’ve heard comparisons between ND and PSUs Pegula Ice Arena are pretty close.
It looks like a great place to play and just curious if you had a link. I did a very quick Google search/scan and only found previous year’s results.

Here's a direct link...updates are usually pretty slow.

A lot of the best tournaments and showcases are birth year based. That's true for both AAA and AA. Really makes no difference what USA hockey recognizes or not. The top organizations create birth year teams because that's where the demand is. But then PAHL refuses to adapt their divisions and pointlessly digs in their heals as teams continue leave for 13U and 15U AA divisions in the AHF or play a completely independent schedule.

I know there's a demand for it, which is why organizations and some leagues are accommodating, but if the goal is to go to USA Hockey Nationals,  Tier II 15U teams will be playing 16U anyways, so why not put together the strongest team consisting of 08/09s?

One of my son's teams went to Nationals at 16U and they had a few minor BY players on their team...it made them stronger and without them, they may not have won Districts.

I understand the argument for 15U teams and Showcases, tournaments, etc. but in end, they're playing 16U.

  5. Once they get to the 15U/16U age, it doesn't really matter as much, IMO.  The gap in maturity has decreased..some of these kids are are playing PIHL Varsity against 18 year olds by this time.

BY teams for Tier II don't make a lot of sense to me...put the best kids on the 16U AA team regardless of whether they are a 2008 or 2009.  If you adhere strictly to the BY model, the organization's 16U AA will be weaker and if you have kids play up on the 16s, the 15s will be weaker.

Until USA Hockey recognizes Tier II 15U, I don't see the point.

When my son was a PeeWee, I thought it was preferable, but as the years went on and seeing him play PAHL16U AA , 18U AA and PIHL AAA, I started to think differently.

PAHL can shove fair play points, icing on a penalty kill, and automatic offsides right up their @$$, too.

Unfortunately, the latter two are newer USA Hockey rules and PAHL decided to adopt them, unlike PIHL.  I don't mind the no icing on a penalty kill that much, but the FPPs and auto offsides are ridiculous.

Might want to look at it before they shut it down also!  Haha

That's what they did several years ago when.they first moved to SE. They mistakenly had all stats available for players and goalies for a few weeks.  Then they shut it down.  It was fun while it lasted...

  8. Yes....so true.  My son has been fortunate to play on a top 20 18U AA and top 25 16U AA team over the last few years, with one going to Nationals.  At the time, we had at least 2 other teams in our division ranked in the top 10-30 as well  I remember looking at other districts and thought...outside of Central States and maybe Michigan, we have it so tough....you see the same teams/organizations in other districts going to Nationals practically every year because they have no competition...

  9. Club hockey is all over the place.  As Saucy said, teams are.much more difficult to make and depending on the school, commitment levels can be very high.  I know some very good players that have been cut at some larger school ACHA teams.  Sometimes it tough to compete with 21-22 year old freshman with more maturity and experience.

My son was contacted by several ACHA teams from M1 to M3, in addition to some Tier II/III Junior scouts.  He ended up at Pitt with a very difficult major and decided he didn't want to commit to hockey.  Playing Juniors was not an option since playing NCAA was never a goal.  He just wanted to get on with life...

Can't remember if this has been posted before, but I came across.this article from June about club hockey.  Pretty interesting....

To put the acha in complete perspective - UNLV got beat down 12-1 something of that sort a year or two ago by a small ncaa d1 program, Alaska Fairbanks. I think that was on espn or espn plus when I watched it. If it wasn’t for the unlv goalie it would have been worse. Alaska dressed 5 lines for the game. Their bottom players & normal scratches got a lot of icetime. The main thing I remember was how bad NCAA d1 skaters made the top ACHA skaters look. The difference was very noticeable. Now that I recall this, I am wondering if it was Arizona, I’m going to stick to unlv, Arizona also played a small or new ncaa d1 team at one point. please don’t point to LIU that was an oddity for various reasons.

A few years ago, before Lindenwood went NCAA D1, their ACHA team played Denver and lost 9-1.  Denver played their scrubs and outshot them 58-14.

This season, Minot State gets a shot at Colorado College and Denver on 12/29 and 12/30.

Bairel is a dump super dirty

    Locker rooms are to small

And the benches are 2 foot wide and big enough for 15 players

I thought Jimmy was going to fix that place up

    New lights and nothing else

Jimmy did much more than that.  LED lighting was the first upgrade followed by renovating all locker rooms and bathrooms.  Also added a locker room and upgraded the cooling.systems in both rinks.  Fresh paint everywhere as well....I'm sure I'm missing more.q Yes, the benches are way too small... that's a tough one if you have the existing footprint to work with.

So why do so many kids verbal on Aug 1?

NCAA rules for D1 Ice Hockey.  August 1 is the date when recruits can start taking official visits and receive verbal scholarship offers (prior to their Junior year).

Very disappointed to read this. Certainly I wasn't expecting zero crime and a top tier academic ranking, but this definitely is well below my expectations.

Same here.  My wife graduated from IUP and I have a few friends who played football there 30 years ago.  They're all very successful in their  careers.  I also spent a few weekends there back in the day and thought it had a lot to offer at the price and provided a decent college town experience.

Can you share with us the rules differences between the two sides of the state?  I had heard the Eastern side has a distinct advantage in eligibility and player pool.

For AAA, all the schools are Private so they always have an advantage.  The LaSalle team that won a few years ago against NA had 3 future NCAA D1 players with one (Lipkin) being drafted by the Coyotes and playing World Juniors for Team USA this year.

  15. Regarding Duquense, Conrad approached me concerning my son during a game to inquire about his plans after HS.  I told him he was most likely going to a school that was not Duquense, and we had nice conversation.  He gave me his contact info and said to reach out if his plans changed or had any questions regarding hockey in general.  That was it...good experience for me.

As others have suggested, my son picked a school based on what he wants to study and hockey is only a bonus, which gives him the opportunity to make new friends and continue playing the game he loves...
