  8. January 2023 Thoughts AAA Holy Ghost Prep appears top dog in the East while Peters Twp maintains top in West with lots of challengers AA South Fayette and Armstrong appear headed for a showdown in West but TJ is red hot while Pennridge owns the title A Can anyone challenge West Chester East . Fox Chapel and North Hills think so ?

  10. The Hoosier Cup in South Bend and Governor's Cup of New York in Jamestown are two of the BEST Tournament Fields in the Country including High School +18 U and 16 U at any level. We get plenty of people who talk to these kids about College and Junior Options to move players toward ACHA M1 and NCAA D3 Opportunities for those not going to the NHL. Quality Programs participate and some great hockey is being played,

  13. Pennsylvania High School Hockey Hall of Fame Pennsylvania State Hockey Championship Celebrations 2022-23 Thursday January 19 Kirk Nevin 7:15 PM – Latrobe vs Thomas Jefferson Ø 2013 ~ Latrobe 10th Reunion Pennsylvania State Championship Pennsylvania High School Hockey Champions - Members of the Team 2013 PENNSYLVANIA STATE CLASS AA CHAMPIONS ~ LATROBE WILDCATS 4 Basenback, Joshua F - 35 Brudnok, Shane G 65 Carr, Cameron D 7 Deffelice, Ryan D 49 Douglas, Benjamin F 6 Ferguson, Adam F 18 Hunter, Dalton F 19 Johns, Brendan F 9 Johnson, Christopher F 84 Shaffer, Tanner F 11 Singley, Joshua F 2 Staffen, Daniel D 96 Tonks, Drew D 3 Vasinko, Robert D 24 Winebrenner, Nathan F 22 Wright, Joseph D John Winebrenner Head Coach Ron Tonks Asst Coach Brody Aukerman Asst Coach Jim Singley Asst Coach Mary Ann Singley Team Manager Team Story - Program Development and History When you read a lot of hockey articles on the Internet, it gives one a sense of accomplishment when a program wins its first tournament game or a league overcomes years of obscurity to win a long sought after championship for the first time. For many of us that have followed the Pennsylvania State Championships for many years, the question remained when the CPIHL would win a Flyers Cup. I am sure the Flyers Cup committee when they seeded Parkland, with an undefeated record in the Lehigh Valley League, was thinking along those same lines as the Trojans were granted an 11th seed. Parkland defeated Abington of the Suburban League and then raised eybrows when it defeated ICSHL AA Downingtown East. When the Trojans defeated Suburban League power North Penn, the Hoosier's tapes started circulating as this team would be guaranteed a seat at the Flyers Cup AND Pennsylvania State Final since Cherokee was ineligible for the Pennsylvania State Championship. Cherokee earned that long anticipated Flyers Cup after several finals appearances and defeated Parkland in the Flyers Cup 6-3 For 15 out of the past 17 years, Western Pennsylvania has captured the Class AA crown for PA Hockey. Council Rock South interupted the WP run a year ago by defeating West Allegheny in the finals. Latrobe is the owner of three of those fifteen titles, as the Wildcats had a three year run in 2008, 2009 and 2010.All of Latrobe's Pennsylvania State Championships were one goal victories over Conestoga, Council Rock South and Downingtown East and the Wildcats are looking to join Canevin with four Pennsylvania State AA titles. Latrobe has reached the Pennsylvania Finals yielding only two goals in three games and netminder Shane Brudnock is looking to finish his career with a State Title he won as a freshman. In the Penguins Cup Final against Pine Richland, the Wildcats’ Dan Staffen broke the ice with 9:08 left in the second period. Latrobe added two more goals in a quick span to take control Dalton Hunter’s wrister gave the Wildcats a 2-0 lead and Adam Ferguson swatted in a loose puck at the top of the crease 41 seconds later for a 3-0 Latrobe advantage.

Latrobe’s (22-3-0) Head Coach Ron Makoski, established a goal prior to the season that this group of talented players could mold as a team and after the Wildcats defeated West Allegheny 3-2 in overtime and then Franklin Regional 3-2 in overtime to wins its first ever Penguins Cup. So before a great turnout of Latrobe Wildcat faithful, who ventured over the mountain on route 271 and some pretty boisterous Conestoga fans the crowd of an estimated 1300 watched the battle for supremacy in Class AA begin between the Pioneers and Wildcats. The opening period was scoreless. Latrobe struck early in the 2nd period as JeffJoe Regula dangled the puck and fed Alex Stahl on the doorstep who jammed the puck past Mazda wot give the Cats a 1-0 lead at 13:25. Latrobe’s Zack LaDuke got his own rebound of the loose puck and scored to make it 2-0 Wildcats at 8:38. The Pioneers finally hit paydirt with 1:06 to go in the second as the Masciantonio brothers set up a nice give and go as Loyacona stopped Vince on the initial shot, but brother Rich found a loose puck on the goal line and punched it home for a 2-1 game. Latrobe’s biggest producer all season JeffJoe Regula got behind the Pioneer defense and beat Madza on an overpowering wrist shot on the short side to give Latrobe a 3-1 lead with 12:58 to go. Conestoga outshot Latrobe 12-4 in the third period and finally solved Loyacona as Adrian Piwonski found a rebound and scored with 52 seconds remaining to cut the lead to 3-2. Latrobe would hold on and win their first ever State Championship.

The Indians smashed Hampton 9-2 and Greensburg CC 8-0 to reach the Penguins Cup against Kittanning. In the finals, Peters struck early and often to defeat the Wildcats 6-3 to capture their 2nd straight Penguins Cup, The defending State Champions would play Holy Ghost Prep who won their 1st Flyers Cup defeating Freedom [LVIHL], Archbishop Wood [SHSHL] and Abington [SHSHL]. The Road to a Pennsylvania High School Hockey Championship In the first period The Indians pounded Holy Ghost for a 14-4 shot advantage on goaltender Dave Monteith in the 1st with a balanced attack and broke open the game early with four goals from Matt Clackson [8:02], Mike Papciak [7:23], Matt Schwartz [2:56] and Brandon Rubeo [2:22] for a 4-0 lead at the end of one. In the second and Peters continued its onslaught as Matt Schwartz and Mike Sherer scored to spur Peters Twp to a 6-0 lead. Holy Ghost finally took advantage as Ryan Gunderson [2:54] and Paul Worthington [1:02] took advantage of the Firebirds power plays and cut the lead to 6-2. The prettiest goal of the game came as the Peters line of Christian Minella, Matt Schwartz and Matt Clackson would put an end to it with one of the prettiest passing sequences and a great backdoor finish by Minella with 33 seconds to put the Indians on top 7-2 after two periods. The third period was pretty much academic as Peters added two more goals by Minella and Kevin Kustron and HGP’s Worthington added a tally at 11:21 to make the final outcome 9-3 and a second straight Pennsylvania Class AA Championship. Kyle Kittleberger stopped several Firebird chances with some spectacular goaltending throughout stopping 23 shots. The win by Peters Twp put this team in the company of the best Class AA teams who have ever captured the Pennsylvania State Class AA Championship and opened a debate that this may be the best team in the state at any level. HGP Head Coach Brian Tibbels called Peters “better than any AAA teams in the state”.
  16. I agree but organizations need to work on development and depth to compete at AAA and AA
  17. Franklin Regional 8 Greensburg Salem 3 says otherwise ,,,,,,,,thats up for debate ?
  18. The idea when we formed the PIHL was to have ONE` All Star Game at AAA, AA and A in 1999. The number of schools of participating should 16 at AAA 16 at AA and 16 at A and the rest in development in B All Star Games are the best players at ALL Levels and is pretty close to the Vision of 20 + years ago I had proposed at one point a top 25 game between Eastern and Western Pa to be played on the day of the State Finals involving players not participating in States (the top 25 is in the works for 2023) What High School Hockey needs is one person in charge of program development and to work building new and existing organizations for the aforementioned to come to fruition
