  1. Yesterday was the first night of 16u tier 2 tryouts at the new Vengeance. Anybody know what turnout was like? Compared to previous years? Was just curious. I was wondering if the new shine and the other organizations being shown the door would bring in a huge turnout or if it was basically the same with the same as usual. Of course I also thought Huskies would get a huge crowd last season with kind of starting new but it didn't seem to go that way.

Also curious if they are absorbing the Vipers teams that played there, if those teams are planning to move somewhere else together and just use another org name or if those players are just scattering. It's a bit of a shame seeing one of the oldest orgs from around the area that so many played for over the years just... disappear.

Reminder that the Yetis are looking to field a 16U National Bound team and are having two free pre-tryout sessions (TOMORROW and Tuesday) for any '08 or '09 skaters.  Those dates are:

    Sunday 4/21 from 2:30pm - 3:50pm

    Tuesday 4/23 from 8:30pm - 9:50pm

The link to the Google form to sign up is HERE.

Some additional information that may help your decision:

    - Their 16U team last year played A Major Black and had a great season overall.

    - They were made up of almost all first-year ('08) players -- fourteen of them.  Most of those players should be coming back, as it was a tight-knit, friendly team.

    - They are hoping to make the jump to AA National Bound.  Whether or not they do depends on what talent they get to replace the three or four '07s that aged out.

    - If they are able to make that jump, they plan on having paid, non-parent coaches.

    - There is no overlap because they have the last tryouts locally (4/26 to 4/28), so any high-level player looking for an opportunity to play at a higher level will still have that chance.

I am just sharing this.  Not looking to debate the organization, location, dates, coaches, etc.  If you or someone you know can use it, great.  If not, great.

There is some overlap with Vengeance 16u tryouts.

There is in fact some overlap with Vengeance 16u NB and Mixed Year skates/tryouts.

From what I heard the coach was getting backlash from players who thought they were superstars and thought they should have been out there everywhere shift which you guys might have had 2 lines that could actually do that.

Who cares if the coach brought in other players. I also know other players who wouldn't play since he got let go. One guy was a huge ringer. So because a few players were grumpy over ice time they fired a coach who had a winning record and a successful running at the rink and crowd. If you noticed the crowd got smaller and smaller since he got canned. But hey I'm just friends with the coach and his wife. We got their story and know some of the players personally and they said something completely different than what you're saying.

I'm not here to start drama. I was really rooting for a team in our county as there is really nothing to do on a Saturday night here. It was refreshing walking into a game seeing 400-500 people in the stands. And the fact the the coach got zookys to sponsor and have beer sales at the rink and the owner took credit from the league saying he got it. We will definitely miss going down to watch the games. It was seriously a fun environment.

Best of luck to you and your teammates for whatever you guys do in the future.

Nothing to do on a Saturday? You have Pitt, Robert Morris, and the Nailers playing on Saturdays.

I hate to say it but you drank the kool aid. I’ve heard from vendors, other players, sponsors that the owner robbed you blind. He owes everyone. Kept all the sponsorships money. Owes vendors. Portion of ticket sales goes back to players but he kept it. He’s a professional con artist. Look at his history. Goes on for decades, yet he always beats the system. Our court system is a joke

Courts do nothing to white collar criminals. If this thief stole the same amount or less out of a bank, he'd be in jail.

  6. Seems like Shadyside Academy would be a much better choice for local kids that have parents that are willing/able to spend money for hockey plus school. I know for a fact that every kid gets an equal chance there at least.

I knew a trainer who said they believed they were seeing the kids injured by the end of the season due to too much physical activity. Some truth likely to that.

Another problem is that unlike walking or running, a skating stride isn't natural to human anatomy. Like a pitcher throwing a ball overhand, as hard as they can, over and over. So to be doing that constantly and at that exertion isn't good. Especially when joints are still developing.

And not to mention the mental part of time spent that could've been used for something else, and when all that time used for training suddenly goes away.

There's very, very few NHL players or coaches that would tell you that that much time skating and training is good to do.

But people will continue to not listen to doctors or professional athletes and continue to listen to amateur coaches.

Preds 09 AAA tryouts finished last night and they've already sent selections to their core. Deferring the rest to the 08 AAA tryouts tomorrow. Supposedly some additional players will make the 09 AAA team and a few that don't make that team will be placed on the 08 AAA team. And then as players get moved down each rung they'll be asked to stay and play for their mixed 16U team.

    Makes perfect sense, right?

    That makes no sense.

  9. What I would like to know is why is it so important to pay North Catholic? Whats in it for the Pens org to do that? Do they get a kickback?

Also, I know theoretically why they want you to do excel, you get a lot of ice time and they get a lot of money. But does it ever dawn on any parents that even NHL'ERS aren't on the ice that much? That there's a point of diminishing returns when it comes to too much ice time/gym time? If everybody would use their heads and refuse to do this, then it wouldn't be a thing. But the allure of that gear bag and window sticker is enough to let it perpetuate, I guess.

Yep, that would be my kid that got cut because we would not get on board with NC/ Excel. Logistically not feasible for our family but hey, as we were told they never cut kids for not doing Excel. 🤷🏻‍♀️ and to sweeten the experience the rest of the team knew by 5:30 who had made it but we had to reach out to the coach at 9:45 pm to get an answer. What. A. Joke.

Brutal. They're doing a real great job growing Pittsburgh hockey players out there in Cranberry. 🤷‍♂️

It is the parents.  I tell families with mite players to find a team your kid is happy on and stick with it.

Every season it's the same thing.  Some people call it "A chasing," but I call it lack of foresight, as well.  If your kid leaves a team where they are happy -- so they can play for a team with an extra A -- that doesn't mean they're locked in for life.  The next season they might not make that team, it may have been a bad experience, or the team/organization could even fold.  Then they're stuck and desperate to find a home.

Can't move down a level, though, right?

Multiply that by 80% of the folks out there, and you get what we are seeing right now.

It's absolutely stupid, and the sad part is that parents only realize they goofed after their kid's time is done and they're playing beer league.

The sadder part is that they took other kids with them.

To expand on that a bit, a lot of the teams have had a certain number of kids year over year. So each year, you have one, two, however many... that step away for whatever reason. Now the coach has X roster spots to fill. You might get one. But you're not part of that core group. Next season, if someone wants to come back, or the coach is also coaching a school team and wants to add one of them, or somebody shows up at tryouts that is better or was cut by a higher-ranked team... you're going to be in the group of players that's first to be off the team. Or you walk into your first season onto a team that's mostly all been together for years prior, and wonder why you're not getting the ice time or special teams time you had on your last team. It is what it is.

Everything you said has zero to do with people accusing the school of covering up abuse that happened at said school.

Your trust in Catholics is about as good as my trust in so-called Christians.

I don't trust any of them, either.

But it doesn't say much for the judgment of people in charge of the school that they thought naming it after that goof was good idea.

Team folded due to player issues. Guys no longer wanted to play road games. The schedule was terrible. Guys no longer wanted to keep the commitment they signed up for.  Etc.

Players paid $350 total for the season. That covered jerseys, practice slots, our travel, and hotels.

Players received $500 for every sponsor sold

The last coach was fired due to the players no longer wanting to play for him. Had nothing to do with the owner.

It sounded like a disaster from the start.

Did anyone else see that when they fired the last coach for calling the owner out for stealing money and got fired, all of a sudden the team went to shit and started losing fans??? I'm not defending my friend, but it seemed like he had a good thing going.

Huh. A conman stealing money. Who could've saw that coming?

NC has a horrible track record of protecting its students?

    Could you be more specific?

The problem was right in the name they removed. Removing it doesn't change the fact that they still named it after him after everything came to light. And only changed their minds when the backlash was received. Plus, the word "catholic" is still there, that's enough for me to not trust them.

Well public schools aren't much better at that.

Perhaps things still go on, but I don't remember hearing of a school district covering up abuse by moving an offending staff member from school to school, allowing them to continue the abuse.
