If there are so many of us that feel this way why are we letting the politicians tell us how to live our lives?  So many people in financial ruin because of government mandates. I think it's much worse than the disease.  Many people will never recover from the economic destruction. History will show that the cure was worse than the disease.

You're absolutely right about financial ruin that some will suffer. But ideally, that's why we HAVE a government, to take care of citizens that are up against it in situations like this. It's too bad that government is seemingly not able or- more likely, not interested in-meaningfully doing their job.

That's why people should be angry, not because there's a pandemic out of your control that required shut-downs.

I was just told of a school in Allegheny county that will not have fall sports regardless what PIAA says tomorrow. The super intendant along with the school board are citing reasons such as - the kids are not full time in school, it’s to dangerous, they don’t want athletes picking up covid and bring it to the school (hybrid attendance). Possible vaccine by January. The hockey club was specifically noted during this zoom meeting, the school board gives the the club money, they feel hockey has more close contact than any sport. It will be interesting to see if this comes true. if one school pulls this, I’m sure a few others will follow.

Hockey has more contact than any sport? What a laugh.

Sounds more like some people want to punish the kids because they're not having regular school.

Last time I checked this was the USA not CHINA. People in the USA value their freedom and ability to move around as they please even if sometimes it means not having as much control over this virus. Don't you think by now everyone understands the risks involved with sports, and life in general? I know you will come back with the argument that kids are going to unknowingly give it to old people.  That's where the old people maybe should assume that everyone has it.  Especially if they are high risk. I made a decision to be around my grandkids knowing they are taking more risks.  It's a personal choice. That's why I like the USA. I'm free to make it.

And this, folks, is the problem. Selfishness. It permeates the lives of these "freedom fighters" in many aspects of life, so why would a pandemic be any different.

They didn't learn when the government let the bars and restaurants reopen to their demand, only to not follow guidelines and wind up in they same place we were. Hopefully the lesson was learned by the majority.

If sports get stopped, this attitude is the reason.

Attention ctil20, forbin and Quinlan2020's of this board. We simply do NOT 'know' what is going to happen by opening schools, playing sports, etc. even if you think you do. If you Want to live in fear of your "What if's" then you have that right or 'freedom' as you so callously put it but I and many others do not want to live that way and that is my decision to make. I would never be so egotistical as to tell anyone how to live, what decisions to make for themselves or their family, even if it's not what I agree with and to call someone "stupid" for living differently is inexcusable. I did my time to allow for everyone's freedom, not just those I agree with and I got out when I saw the pure evil that is 'in charge' and I couldn't support what was being asked of me. I hope this turns back into a hockey board but the current conversations have no redeemable qualities right now and I won't be back. Yes, that is another 'freedom' I have in 'merica… good luck everyone and peace out.

    Bye

Taking the governors feelings out of the equation. Sports could easily happen and probably go largely unscathed in regards to virus spread.

The problem remains, for every coach and organization that is just doing the right thing, following guidelines. You have 5 other shit heads who are letting their personal beliefs and “muh freedoms” get in the way of common sense.

The parents and the freedom fighters are the problem. Make no mistake. If Tom Wolf knew that there wouldn’t be an orgy of parents at high school football games, or youth hockey games, I promise you sports wouldn’t even be on the states radar.

I digress, once again, the freedom fighters, the “patriots”, the coaches, the parents who are looking to “make a point” over what is best for the players are the sole reason why sports is at risk.

As always, you can have your beliefs, you may even be right about them. Who knows? The FACT of the matter is the governing AUTHORITY feels a certain way about the situation and they are calling the shots.

So you can either check your ego and do the strenuous, time consuming, death grappling task of wearing a mask, social distancing, not letting parents conduct their orgies... NOT DRAW ATTENTION TO THE YOUTH SPORT ATMOSPHERE.

Or we can all continue to run around ignoring the states demand, grunting “merica”... and see what happens.

    100% correct

  6. Yeah, while I'm not a Wolfe hater, I have to disagree with his statement.

For one, the Athletic did a Q&A with a Canadian doctor that stated that while locker rooms may be a danger, there is almost zero risk playing hockey as the direct contact is brief. For two, outdoor transmission is very low. It's about length of exposure and viral load. There's no reason sports cant be played with some modification and self-control.

Sitting in a classroom for hours indoors in close proximity is completely different.

Maybe, maybe not.  If you mean by marketing to attract spectators, I agree.  If you mean marketing to attract student-athletes, it is hard to say for those schools.

DIII sports as all about attracting student athletes.  For many sports, it is about attracting students that will pay full boat (no non-need financial aid).  For many small schools, having these types of students is crucial to their bottom-line.

Yes, just referring to spectators. Pitt should be able to fill some seats.

Unfortunately, and it isn't always the case, often hockey parents even on the same teams breed jealousy of each other and instead of cheering for a team default to cheering for their own kid, worried about them losing a spot on the team the next year or not looking as good as the best kid on the team. This often comes from parents with little knowledge of the sport or who learned about it from mite hockey and think scoring 200 goals is the way to be the best player on the ice. Hell with defense or passing or over carrying the puck.  Also doesn't matter if you lose as long as your kid scored the hat trick.

Add to that environment another team who likely has a chip on their shoulder and you get a powder keg. It gets ugly - grown men yelling about and at children, fist fights in the stands, drunken idiots.  Yeah - I won't miss much about being at the rink if I can't go.

Perhaps it's because of the professionalization of youth sports these days that led to that. People talking like their kid's mite team is the Montreal Canadiens, and their kid is Maurice Richard. For all I know, travel baseball, basketball, etc. may be similar these days. It doesn't seem to effect football or track, or other sports that are more school-team based. And the parents whose kids play solely school/in-house teams seem much better adjusted to reality.

I for one am looking forward to having an excuse for watching games on livebarn rather than standing around obnoxious individuals. If I had mite or squirt age kids I'd be even happier.

In my experience, hockey parents are different than a lot of other parent groups- it always seems like overall they're less friendly. Generally as peaking, of course.

80% of the players drafted & tendered never make it to the respective team.

it’s all relative in the end, there is not a lot that separates these top players. If two players are equal in skill and skating the junior team usually will take the bigger kid. It’s just the way it is.

to answer your question, there are so many kids beating down the top junior leagues. Have you ever been to a NAHL camp ? the final invite camp, not the money maker camps. There is 100 skaters. You have the top 10 players then the bottom 10 players, not much at all separates 11-90.  Connections, money & advisors is what determines Who the bottom half of a high end junior team is.

True. You're right, not a lot separates many of those kids.

Well you could go research my post history or ask some of the old timers around here about my 99. If you want to get into hockey talk, I forgot more than you probably learned to this point. I will give you this free advice, playing for the predators won’t get your kid anywhere. Playing for esmark could help a little if he’s the top player, ppe is all that matters outside of Pittsburgh in the hockey world. There are kids with half the talent at ppe getting drafted over esmark kids. It’s because ppe runs the show. It’s that simple.

As much as I can believe that, I have a hard time believing junior teams or whatever would pass up a better player for one that's not as good.
