So, since he has a son that plays in the program, he's not supposed to help build and support the sport.. I mean by your logic, he shouldn't be involved at all.  FYI, he doesn't profit a single penny from helping to build the sport.  Obviously you don't know him, and don't have to "kiss the ground he walks on" to know that he doesn't crave any public attention or acknowledgement.  All this back and forth doesn't help anyone, at the end of the day, the question is "is youth hockey in Pittsburgh better off since the Pens and DM have been involved", I would argue yes, it's 10x's better now than before the involvement.  I am going to go out on a limb and guess you disagree?

Mom your nose is so far up his a$$ it’s ridiculous, you must be giving him reports that you are defending him in The public. Hockey is worse off with that megalomaniac involved. All these great community things would have still happened under the pro team and all the nhl programs.

he hasn’t helped build anything, all he did was use his influence, money and power to surround his son with the best players at his BY along with a coach who’s won and was beating his ass at his own game.

lets talk about the 03 dad who’s kid currently plays in the ohl. Last year when the dad questioned dm on excel being a conflict of interest the dad was banned from the rink. They tried to ban him from away games with a threat to him against his youngest in the program. DM tried to make a example of him to the other parents such as you, get in line and don’t Question anything. I personally know this parent along with all the details to the story. So please defend DM here. This man really did give back unlike DM. This man would ise the instructor icetime at Baierl and some of the excel 03 kids would come work for free with him. That was DM biggest problem with the man, kids were skipping excel Once a week to get BETTER instruction for free in a smaller group.

keep riding DM, it’s getting your kid nowhere. My 99 was draft in the ushl futures draft, jealous mom ? Though he never made it to the ushl, I know how much it hurts you just to read that.

tell me what kid going to public school can make a practice that starts at 1:50 ? NONE.

I believe that team had 3 kids from Chicago on that team, and two of the three weren't heavy contributors to that team.  Not going to argue the 18's this year struggled, they had a lot of injuries and had a short bench.  Most of their games going into the 3rd period they were ahead by 2 or 3 goals and ended up losing those games, mainly because they were gassed and didn't have the legs to finish the game.

Just because the teams lost doesn't mean they don't develop talent, it just means they got beat by a better team that day or simply didn't play like a team.  We obviously don't agree on this point, and that's fine.  We can agree to disagree, but there's a reason why most kids want to play at the organization whether they want to admit it or not.

Ummm you are forgetting they took the two best players from the blue jackets. The 03s never won a national championship. The 02s did last year with a handful of 03s on the team. One 03 who is now on the ndtp contributed.

No one wanted the suspended player back, no one in W Pa would want the kid on the team! He wasn’t on the team this past weekend!

Umm yes he was playing this weekend at upmc for the team. The kid was only off the team for a few days. As per usual you don’t know what you’re talking about. Keep drinking the Morehouse kool aid, you are stuck under his thumb. You replying to this topic made it very clear who you are, MOM.

Serious question, outside of the PPE ‘03 team and girls teams you mention, how has anything he’s done helped the broader hockey community? What does the average in house player gain by the ushl playing a showcase here? They pay admission I’m sure. But what do they get from it? I think it’s also important to clarify something about the Prep team. Do the high school aged players have to attend NC/Excel to play for the 18U team?

don’t waste your breathe on her lunacy, I know who she is now.

The 2003 team has been one of the most successful teams in the organization, going back to mites! Check out their overall record, It is one of the most talented birth years in Pittsburgh. Not sure what Morehouse has done to piss you off, but you need to get over it! He has done more for Pittsburgh hockey then anyone has in the last 10 years. Did it help his son, probably... in doing so it has help thousands of local and yes, kids that want to come to Pittsburgh to train and play in a good organization. Say what you want about DM, or the organization, but it’s successful. It shows by the number of kids drafted (wasn’t the number one overall pick in the USHL draft last year developed, trained and played for the PPE) committed to colleges, and I’m not talking just about the boys, the girls teams are very successful and have developed nicely, with a lot girls committed. He’s also one of a few who is responsible for bringing the USHL fall classic to Pittsburgh, that’s great for the local communities and players. They are putting more resources, time and money into the program for the girls. Doesn’t matter who’s involved, it’s good for Pittsburgh and kids that choose to send their kids to NC/Excel/ or PPE!

Everyone that knows anything about local hockey, the history and how things operate are laughing at this post.

Danner! You’re so full of yourself! Were you at the meeting last week? I was and you do NOT have to go to NC to play on the prep team. So what is your next conspiracy theory?

So please tell me how a kid going to high school is going to make a mid day practice ?

  7. 1 hour ago, The King said:

What @Danner27 is saying is that, it’s all the same teams that compete against each other all season. The league actually makes it more legitimate by making the teams qualify. MidAm takes any team with the fee. Now it used to be that you had to have a certain amount of wins against the level of competition for that Tier. But it changed as more people complained about not having an opportunity at nationals and USA Hockey and it’s affiliates used that mentality to increase their income. Add more teams, make more money! Capitalism at its finest. Problem is, it cheapens the experience. Having 3 classes at nationals is just a sign of the times. Class segregation, leadership making a financial gain off of the constituents call for equality, penalization for anyone that questions leadership, sounds familiar doesn’t it?

Ding ding this guy gets it.

  8. 24 minutes ago, Theroadtobeerleague said:

The Viper Stars are also independent.  The mid am is divided up so that the part of the mid am that is western PA gets its own qualifier, as do WV, Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana. That’s why it’s called “States”

Tier 2 Nationals will be in three groups: 1A, 2A, and 3A.    The Mid Am winner will be placed in 3A, the toughest.  With their recent wins, SCIR will be a top 20 team and have a chance to make a good showing, as they’ve already played some of the top AA teams and held their own.  Important to note that Mt Lebo and the Foxes both had a win vs them this season, as did Westmoreland. These are 14 and 15 year old who one moment look like they have it all figured out and the next  moment are totally clueless.  Hockey is played on a slippery surface with a small round puck, so bounces matter and it’s pretty unpredictable.  Just look at the Pens game today as an example. The better team doesn’t win every time.

I understand all that. Again it’s just a second Pahl championship tournament in the end with the occasional local indie team. Looking at midget - 18s it’s Pahl with the indie icemen, 16s are just all Pahl teams.

  9. 47 minutes ago, Saucey said:

Tier II Renegades 14u won, no surprise there.  Looked bored and like they weren't even trying as they toyed with the Icemen in that Championship game.

Not to come of like a d!ck, tier 2 It’s not a district championship. For some reason they are calling it “states” now and it’s not. It’s just Pittsburgh teams, just about everyone that applies makes it. Not to mention there is something like 3-4 different tier 2 national champions. It’s really just a another Pahl championship the local independent team (Icemen) partake in.

  10. Tier 1 is compete.

18s winner esmark. Not much of a surprise here, nothing to to note accept PPE getting destroyed by everyone.

16s winner PPE. Think we all saw this coming, some interesting thoughts at this age group - PPE killed everyone (preds 12-0, barons 9-0, Sylvania 6-1) esmark 03’s appear to be the only team that gave ppe a game losing by a score of 2-0. Cleveland Barons - what happened to this program ? 0-3 giving up 21 goals and only scoring 1 goal.

15s winner blue jackets. I would say this was a small upset, someone on the board did call this out as possible.

congratulations to the district tier 1 champions and the teams that all made it to the tournament!

Yes, there were a few 02 that were a big part of the success. No, I didn’t say he’s a bad coach. He’s a parent coach though, and there in lies the problem. There’s no place for it at the tier 1 level, period! He has famously chosen teams out of loyalty, has threatened to take players to other organizations, has followed through on those threats, has controlled mid am camp selections, has denied more deserving kids the opportunity to develop, and his teams have notoriously underperformed. He’s done it all for his kid and for his own personal agenda. Everything  it should not be about! The ppe let it happen

Take everything you just said, now Replace the name with David Morehouse. Not much different except the operating budget behind the teams eh ?

  12. Speaking of the 18s, word this weekend PPE will only have one team at that age next year. The 18 prep team. They finally found a away to force the 18s into nc/excel. The team will practice at noon every day. So as I first said this team will be for post grad kids not in high school anymore, if you are still in hs you will have to attend nc. The team will attract better out of state players that have graduated still hanging onto the dream. not sure how many of you nc/excel cheerleaders, dreamers will get a gold helmet, if any do. Your best chance will be this, it’s first year.

Can you hear the giant sigh of relief now that this debacle is finally over? What started as a colossal fuck up by bringing this coach back, to its embarrassing culmination. Congrats, you got what you deserve with this shit show! Hey, at least his kid got the advancement opportunities he was after. Thankfully some of the others can look back to last year and remember the National championship they got because they were lucky enough to play for Mueller and with some talented 03 teammates

He’s not a bad coach, sure it was all about his kid and mr m was paying him back. The issue with that team was he also picked it. FYI the 03s did not win the national championship last year. Two 02s carried that team at nationals, go look up the stats, they are still online. I won’t dispute mueller, he’s a excellent coach. One of the top in the country, that’s why they tossed all that money at him. 03 ppe could never beat him when he was at the mission, mr m need him and his star player to be around his kid.

I hear you. And by no means am I defending the teams or players as far as talent goes. I was just trying to inform on how the teams were picked. Also there is no way they would get together and slot the players and teams where they belong. We all know their 18uaaa coach picks by what school you play for and what gym you belong to. Its a shame because they were good in years past. My son played there and won multiple banners when it was mostly an aa program. Bob Errey came over from southpointe and started this mess when his team joined the NJPHL and opted out of PAHL. Its been downhill from there.

I forgot about bob errey and the mess he started, maybe that is what made Ralph really start to see the dollar signs. Gary is a huge problem for that program, I’m sure everyone can agree on that, yet he’s coaching two “aaa” teams again next year. If they would cut the aaa teams out below the midget age they would probably be able to field really good aa teams, those would eventually feed into tier 1 midget but again, they need real coaches at tier 1. Not the owner who never played and Gary who just adds whatever kids take lessons from him or pay for his gym. To be a equal basher, Bishop is similar with the gym thing, yuri is to when it comes to lessons. This is why PPE will always be the top dog. Sure they have politics to but they are not as trivial such as taking lessons from a coach or using his gym.

Back when I was around their program more (10-15 years ago) they did field very good Tier 2 teams and had great Tier 1 teams for a few years. Doesn’t seem to be the case anymore.

This is why I say they (preds) could become a legit tier 1 option. I don’t know all the reasons that program has turned to crap but one of them is coaching. They could have it set up nice, AA teams feed into the tier 1 teams. They have a great location and nice facility. As it stands PPE & ESMARK are currently the only real tier midget programs. I know some folks think I’m crazy, there isn’t enough talent, etc, but there is.

You guys crack me up.  I just glanced at the ranking.  105 teams in AAA 2005, 45 teams below them.  They’d be 5th (ish) in tier 2.  Not great, not bad.  As for the Preds as a whole, I’m not sure if I’d go back or not.  They are the same as every other club.  Some good things, some bad, some very bad.  Question is, do the pros out weigh the cons?

The answer - nobody outside of the top 1% at ppe will have any kid of hockey career after high school. So have fun, hope your kid has fun and try not to break the bank.

That is FALSE!!!  RMU has turned a profit in the last 5 years ranging from $750,000-$1MM.  Granted, not a lot, but it's not losing money.  Most of that extra revenue is from the college.

You are completely wrong. The rink loses money every year, the college makes it look like it doesn’t. The only rink in the area that is making a good profit is ice castle, this is because the owner also runs the preds.

The Vengeance gets ridiculed on here despite the fact that they have opted out of the Midget "money grab" and are focusing on youth teams instead. Now, we all know the likelihood of these teams staying together is slim for a variety of reasons, but which method will not get crucified on here?

I ask because the Preds are getting ridiculed for their "money grab" but people also think that they are/should be a legitimate option.

As for SHAHA forming a 15U AAA team with a core of 05 PPE Black players - that would simply be absurd and definitely not AAA. I'm not even sure that there is enough ice there to facilitate it. And even if there is, for how long......................?

Esmark and PPE are the top 2 choices right now but they both have warts as well.

Maybe the best move for players is the Prep School route. Culver, Gilmour and Shadyside are all in the MidAm District and there are plenty of choices in New England

Nothing against the vengeance, the reason I feel the predators could become a real 3rd option is due to location. Esmark is right by harmar, ice castle has nothing out that way, there are good players in the south hills. I heard today Gary is coaching two tier 1 midget teams again so, as per usual you can toss them out as a real 3rd option. If the predators would bring in some good coaching they could loss the money grab moniker and become a real 3rd option, for some reason they choose not to.

  19. 12 hours ago, Theroadtobeerleague said:

Good points. I am saying that by the time they reach U15, there aren’t many kids who have a true future in hockey who play on the teams outside of the top teams.   And in western PA, there could be 2-3 teams in the top 30 if there were 2-3 legit options, rather than 6-8 money grabs.

Yes, sort of the point I was trying to make that there could be 3 legit tier 2 midget programs here.

I can't knock people who choose the prep school route because honestly if I had the means and my son had the desire and talent to go I would do it in a heartbeat. I've never looked at the numbers, but I'd have to assume its roughly the same cost wise as playing for PPE and doing the NC/Excel program. And doesn't Shadyside practice everyday and have a team bus for away games? Sounds okay to me.

My oldest had the talent. We didn’t have the money. The New England prep school they wanted him was giving g him some “scholarships” it still would have cost me 25k a year the school was almost 50k a year.
