Only the top 20-25 teams at any BY are legit AAA hockey.  The ranking isn’t as good of an indicator as the RATING.   Preds U15, for example, are rated 5 points below the 25th ranked team.  And don’t forget about Canada. And 9th and 10th graders at New England Prep schools.
5 points is a lot in ratings.  You can almost think of it as the number of skaters that one team needs to replace.   Take the top 5 players from those faux-AAA teams and coalesce them into one team, and that’s what makes a true AAA team.
So it is indeed perhaps true that, for example, at the 2005 BY, there might be 30-45 western PA kids who are actually can play AAA, but another 40-50 whose parents THINK that they can but can’t. So if those top 30-45 ended up at 2-3 teams, it could happen. It does in other cities. The issue is that Preds, Vengeance, Esmark, and always a couple more all think they should be that.

I can’t agree, both of my kids played tier1 for years, i have watched them play against teams in the top 10 all the way down to 100. Personally I feel teams ranked in the top half are legit tier 1 teams. the top 10 teams are a different animal. Going by your logic, only the top 10 teams are real tier 1 teams. go look at ppe & esmark’s midget teams schedule’s on my hockey rankings, Some of the scores will surprise you. Esmark’s 16s are ranked 44 but they beat the number 1 team and lost 4-3 to the number 7 team. Your logic says they are not a real tier 1 team but the scores say otherwise. In my opinion there isn’t much different from teams 20-60 in tier 1. The games can go either way, the data backs this up. 70 and beyond, sure they are much weaker and the argument can be made they are tier 2 teams. Let’s  look at Pahl, every year one aa team is at the top with 2-3 at the very bottom. Should aa just be 4 teams every year ? At that point do you say the 4th place team is a major ? Where does it stop ?  Western pa can support 3 competitive midget tier 1 teams. The vengeance don’t have midget again this year and the icemen just need to turn into tier 2. I’m well aware the ranting number vs ranking. Rating number is part of the reason team 20 doesn’t want to play team 60 They have to beat them by 3 goals to get even game, it doesn’t happen that easy.

Danner. You are usually spot on but there aren't enough Tier 1 players to support 3 teams. Not enough Tier 1 players for even two teams. Three teams are 45 skaters.

I am not saying the 3rd legit local team would be some power house, I’m just saying with their location they could field real tier 1 at 15,16 & 18. We do have enough good midget players in the area for this in my opinion, I’ve seen it with both my sons BY’s, hockey continues to grow in the area and around the country. As it currently stands the predators just field the teams Regardless for the cash. If they felt they did not have enough Capable  players to be able to complete in tier 1 (such as the 15s this year) they just need to cancel that particular BY team and try again the following year. I think what gives them a bad rap, they just field and fill regardless if the players are capable. Their other issue is coaching. As for two teams that’s not true, esmark as much as I dislike the area and some things about the program they have legitimate tier 1 teams this season at 15,16 &18. All three made the district tournament. Last look the 15’s were in the 70s (thats about the end of the legitimate teams) the 16s are in the high 40s ( top 1/4 for the by) and the 18s at 20.

Predictable. Sad but predictable. I’m assuming this BY is notorious in the area based on your post, what I read here and what I hear from friends in the area.

It’s odd but parents of local 04’s seem to be really out of touch, don’t understand the path’s and honestly just assume there is college hockey spots begging to be filled. Having a 99 and 02 I’ve never seen anything like it. Sure, we all as parents in the early days think “maybe my kid can do it” but around the age of 14 you become educated on the paths, how much work & dedication outside of hockey is needed, Class room, nutrition, gym, how much more specialized instruction is needed. Both my kids were fortunate enough through out the years to play for PPE and one of them played for both PPE and esmark. My best guess here, these 04 parents (outside of the ppe parents) probably have never seen high end youth players, I assume this because you look at team like Lebo (Pahl team for years) and the 04 preds (doesn’t appear any of them played tier 1 at ppe or esmark ever from what I’ve read here) these parents Just assume they are playing “aaa” so off to the show they go. It’s bizarre that this certain BY parents seem to be so far behind the curve. I know some 05 and 06 parents who already get it and understand things.  My 99 was a talented dman, he had a legitimate chance to play in the ushl.  When it came down to it, he did not have the dedication to keep pushing after 17 years old and that’s ok. He was selected in the ushl futures draft. Went to one REAL camp, came home and said “dad what’s the point there are so many players out there with my talent and even more - they won’t even end up playing d1 I’m ready to get on with my life next year and just goto college,  Where does this lead even if I get into d1 ? Stuck playing at a school you are still paying for that I might not even want to goto” nothing there for me to argue, he was spot on. He saw the talent, knew he would have to work harder and for what, to play at a school when he is 20 that he might not even want to be at. Yes you parents reading this, the majority of NCAA hockey players are not on a scholarship, most are not even on half scholarships and you better have a 4.0 with a high sat score so you can get some non athletic money. I have my theories but can’t really explain why the 04 BY parents are this crazy and uneducated. Due to my kids birth years out in the open now, where they played and the ushl draft I’m sure many readers will figure out who I am. That might be a good thing ? or maybe not ? but I’ll leave all the readers with Ncaa scholarship dreams  with this : we have a very close friend playing ncca college hockey at a major big 10 university (not some small school like rmu). This player made the USA hockey select camps every year, almost had a spot on the national team. Very talented high end player who also has the size. He only had to play one year in the USHL. He’s a junior this year, he’s considered one the starting 5 on the team, he’s only on a partial scholarship for hockey. His parents are paying 32k a year for him to goto this university that costs roughly 58k a year to live at and attended. In comparison his girlfriend at the same university is only paying 18k due to multiple academic scholarships, she plays no sports, Just an average (smart) college kid. They player I’m speaking about, after he’s done, he will be in the work force, he’s got ZERO interest from any pro team at any level in North America even though he’s a top player from a high level Ncaa program. Sorry to crush so many dreams with one post but this is the reality of college hockey.

  4. Oh boy sounds like some new Lebo accounts have been created. The same as those crazy 15U preds parents who came in guns a blazin’ that didn’t work to well for those folks. Funny, same aged kids (04) after next season they will realize most of their kids won’t even play decent acha hockey let alone the high level junior & Ncaa dreams.

My impression of lebo is less about corruption (unless we are talking about how they don't have truly open elections for their board) and more about how the whole organization is set up to support one person's children.

Just like PPE. Now that certain kid and his dad have his path set they are working for their friends.

So that answers that question with curiously subjective wording of the rules as usual (cue Complaints from the teams that have been denied entry based on the same rule). Ironically?  Come on.

Purposely ambiguous from USA hockey, just like all the rules so they can interpret them how and when they want.

    Straight from the MidAm Website:

    6.  Eligibility for National Tournament Play

In order for any team to be eligible for National Tournament play, the Local Association must have been in existence and approved by Mid Am for a minimum of three (3) prior consecutive years.   For Tier I District tournament, the top six (6) ranked District teams pursuant to MHR will be entered into the District Tournament, the winner of which commits to participate in National Tournament Play.

MLHA fits into this as while they have not been Tier 1, the Local Association has been in existence for far more than 3 years,

    7.  Minimum Number of Youth National Bound Teams

Any Local Association rostering Youth Tier I teams must have at least two (2) National Bound Youth teams from the 14U, 15 Only, 16U or 18U categories in either the Tier I or Tier II categories.

MLHA fits into this as well since their 15U is playing Tier 1 and the 14U team is Tier 2 AA.

So yes, both of these teams ironically have kids from said coach but they are meeting the parameters without needed assistance or pull.

That’s funny to read, last summer there was a rumor that Lebo was going to have a tier118u team. I guess Dave  realized he could take care of both his kids and not add a team. I wondered what happened with that rumor, there was several people and coaches involved but it just went away.

So using nepotism and exclusion to spite nepotism and exclusion is something to be praised? Got it. So to be clear, you’re claiming that the Mount Lebanon 04 team that’s being discussed was created out of a heroic love of the sport by this coach who was tired of seeing PPE exclude worthy players based out of nepotism? Now having agreed that money is one of the driving forces behind the decisions of a lot of people in the sport, nepotism would be a close second. This coach does or does not have kids on the team? I’m also not sure what being an original player on the Hornets has to do with it either. Just want to be clear because you’re post was all over the place.

See the nhl ref coaching his daughter to grow the game, same bs. The coach has built this team for his 04 kid. Most of this team won 3 games in Pahl bantam aa a few years back. He pushed Pahl to let his first year bantam team play in aa. Got his way, Team got embarrassed that season. Just as he got his way with pahl, he got his way with USA hockey for tier 1 status. If I recall correctly, he also has a 05 playing.

And if I'm not mistaken that's because he couldn't make the Jr Penguins at that time. You see how all of this works? It's full circle.

His father was high up on USA hockey (Denver) and the person we are taking about happened to goto Denver u. He was a good player for his time but his father paved his path.

Man!  You can't help yourself!  You probably don't know this, but vast majority of NHL Refs/Linesman have daughters that play hockey.  These guys ONLY agenda is growing the game of hockey for woman, whether it is for one year or ten years!  It shouldn't matter, being involved in any capacity is a good thing.  Your a complete..... well idiot for lack of better terms.  How can one man be so angry, bitter, and have so much resentment against and organization that does so much good for the community and all the kids that play in that organization! ANNNND you supposedly don't have a daughter that plays, so why the heck do you care!  You are a pathetic loser who cares more about other people and their business then he does himself.  Maybe focus on yourself instead of everyone else's person business and life!

I’m convinced at this point, you are his wife. A normal parent can’t be this fn delusional.

He wasn’t promoted. He’s held the position for years.  He already has a daughter playing D1 and a son playing juniors.  He literally has no agenda.

His daughter does not play d1, she graduated and barely played the 4 years she was at penn state. All three kids playing / played for PPE but he’s got no agenda, just wants to promote the game ? Delusional or family you people are. When the youngest is moved on he will no longer be involved with ppe or trying to “PROMOTE”  the game.

  12. 2 hours ago, Hockey1 said:

Running your mouth again I see!  With ZERO clue.  First off, the daughter you are talking about, her dad is NOT an NHL linesman, he is the head of officiating for the entire NHL genius.  His daughter happens to be a very good hockey player and even better person!  You obviously don't know this dad, because he is only coaching to help and grow the sport, which is a great thing!   He has no hidden agenda and isn't playing any favorites!

Save me your BS response about how your the smartest in the room and we are all clueless!  It's obvious your the clueless one and have no insight to any of this!  Growing the girls game is good for everyone.  Period.  You talk about the "WORSE" hockey dad of them all, you do realize that NONE of his daughters care about or even are playing hockey.  Onw takes lessons.  Of course you do because you know everything!!  You know nothing!  YOU. ARE. A. JOKE! enough is enough! Not only are you a joke, but your the worlds biggest cry baby when things don't go the way you think they should go, and the same person that thinks everyone should get a trophy.  Not only are you a joke, your pathetic!  Get a life pal!

Wow got you all worked up on this one! So the nhl guy was  promoted, sorry I do not follow his career. He’s only helping to grow the game by coaching his daughters team, are you this delusional ?  Sounds like you are married to him. As for the other guy that runs the place, his daughters don’t play but they are taking skating lessons ? You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to see where this is heading. So I got 90% of the sorry correct, sorry I didn’t realize the nhl guy was promoted.

  13. I’m going to make this clear, I’m tired of talking about woman’s hockey. All you have to do is look at the prominent names in local hockey, you will soon realize they all have girls that play hockey. Do think the local d1 coach likes sending his daughter to Cleveland to play hockey ? You have a NHL linesman who’s going to coach his daughter. I said there is a new generation with the pro team, it seems nobody picked up on this comment. The worse hockey dad in Pittsburgh that runs the place has daughters. So y’all can stop speculating. Those are all facts!

Every single RMU in-house team uses the outdoor ice rink for their practices and games. There are 250 mites alone each paying upwards of $750 per season. Then squirts through bantams which is at least $1k per kid. Not too mention it's being used for Foxes, as well as Montour/North Hills/Moon HS teams. That single outdoor ice surface probably generates the Island Sports Center about 2 million every season, and I am more than likely on the low side of that. Plus add on all the inline teams that use the other rink. Do you honestly think the RMU D1 team brings that kind of money (or would with more seating) to the facility? Eliminating those outdoor surfaces would be absolutely detrimental to RMU ISC business model and to Pittsburgh area youth hockey. There is no way they would allow that to happen.

Here’s the best part, if rmu didn’t buy the rink it was going under. That place loses money every year. It was also built on a nuclear waste dump. The first 2-3 years the building was there you were told not to drink the water or fill water bottles.

If they added seats on the bench side of the Colonial Arena that would only affect the parking lot to the side of the arena and would create a sort of contiguous bowl... If they added seats to the Olympic side and retrofitted it to NCAA standards that would take out the Stadium Rink. It would seem that the former is a better option than the latter.

as far as ACHA local teams converting to NCAA such as Arizona State (and perhaps UNLV someday with the explosion of hockey popularity in Vegas/sharing a rink with the VGK) did I’d love to see it as a Pitt grad but doubt it happens ever. CHMA games don’t draw (the model isn’t made to draw fans it’s just to play post high school pre beer league haha)  and club sports don’t make any money for the university aside from the fees they pay to use the name and logo or whatever. If any ACHA schools are primed to go NCAA I’d wager on Kent or Ohio U but I’m just pulling those out of thin air since they recruit decently among ACHA players.

Ohio will never field ncaa men’s hockey due to title 9, ten years ago the program was thinking of moving to ncca d3, this decision was halted due to the financial  commitment with expanding all the woman’s program.

There you go. Just curious but the Black Teams we’re independent correct? They’re billed as Tier 1 based off of what I read here. So the higher cost is based off of extensive travel I assume? I’m curious as to what the breakdown is for the fees. Coaches must make a mint. Because the base fee is going to be fixed costs like ice time, jerseys, league fees and coaches stipends. But the independents don’t have the ability to control travel costs. They will  be traveling more not being in a league.  These fees can also be budgeted to fund teams above them. I’m just curious which of these it was. Maybe all?

When my son was there the black teams played in the tier 1 elite league, the elite team played a independent schedule. The reason for this (we were told) was so we didn’t have to play any teams ranked below 20.
