It's one of Culver's lower teams that plays in tournaments like this. They have 4 teams, and the high school teams are the lower two teams of the 4 they have. That being said, they are still sending very good teams. Culver definitely recruits and have had quite a few alumni play in the NHL as well as NCAA. No idea how SSA compares to Culver these days. In looking at SSA's schedule, they have a lot of open dates and seem to have games scheduled only against lower-level prep teams. I have heard that program has struggled lately, but even at their height, they were not a powerhouse.

Personally I like the smaller venues UPMC Lemieux and Ice Line for the terrific atmosphere for the State Finals

RMU use to host it back in early 2000's. and it was filled to the gills( more fans then an actual RMU D1 hockey game)... it outgrew that venue and they moved it.  But they did an amazing job for the fan experience and the players as well

I agree, Pittsburgh is not a State like "Minnesota" or a city as big as Chicago. Pittsburgh is a small town comparatively. Was a hotbed for High School Football talent. Maybe not so much anymore.  Has come a long way in the last 20 years with Hockey but still has along way to go to get there and probably never will.  I think the Pens and Flyers supporting High School Hockey more would help for sure. It's a great idea to play the State Championship games in the Arenas. The Flyers and Pens should make it free admission for the games and give an incentive to Schools that bring their teams to the game. Would love to see 10,000 fans at a State Championship game. It's called "Promotions"

great idea but they wouldn't get 10,000. hell RMU couldn't get 3k a game. what makes you think high schools would get 10 k ?

You better go back and look at South Fayette!  Not sure why you are calling them a weak team!

No need to scores sheet and live barn show all. Started season playing subpar teams and just getting by. Met TJ last week went up 3 caught TJ sleeping. TJ woke up in the second and from there on out wasn't even a game..... So yea.  they are not very good just another average team at best

Actually, with the growth of hockey in Western PA  and Columbus, they should have left it at 8. Take these factors into consideration.

    1. With PE now starting the out of town/state/country influx at 13U - you now have some pretty good players looking for a home and it is usually Esmark, Barons or Vengeance/Preds. In that order. Plus you now have both TriState and Indy Fuel as part of the TPH family so there really is no reason to limit it to 6. Would 5-8 have a legitimate chance? No, but neither do teams with a 5 seed or higher in the NCAA basketball tournament. This covers 14/15/16U.

    2. At 18U you add in both Gilmour and Culver so why not 8?

bc NOT EVERYONE is a winner.... it SHOULD be top 4

I think these were their records but I might have missed one and they might have had more than one team at some ages?

    U15 0-4-0

    U16 2-1-1

    U18 1-3-0

    Their 11 team went 0-4-0

    09 went 0-3-1

Pens Elite did fairly well in their divisions.  Lebo 08 AAA won theirs and went 6-0-0.

just goes to show how BAD preds are, yes pens did well and they played REAL AAA teams, Lebo isnt AAA stop smoking crack, they played in the AA division I bet w wanna be AAA teams

Kids develop better with practice than they do with games.  If you bring it back to what Preds are doing by going independent, the SHAHA '09 model is probably more economical.  Play your PAHL schedule, add a few tournaments, and then a fill in the rest of your 50-60 games by playing multiple "home at home exchanges".  Cost would be more than PAHL, but you are getting more out of it, but still substantially less than going full independent or PPE.

NO need for a squirt or even peewee to be playing that many games, then you wonder why when those BY are older that no ones getting drafted in tier 1 Jrs or Nahl. they've already skimped on development with to many games and not enough practices.

Theses days skills guys are anywhere from 40-60 for group lessons.   A private is usually more.   Sometimes you have to pay the rink 10 a session.

Now, kids take a ton of lessons early on and make the PPE/Lil 66ers.  They can usually hang on for a while.  Cause most of the kids do Excel.  There is a wait list for Excel at the younger ages.

that's bc the older kids parents see the bullshit in the the excel program..... of course the younger has the waiting, bc they are drinking the kool aid.

I don’t think he’s saying tier 2 juniors is weak, he’s saying the naphl is weak. For the most part it is.

not to start a new topic, how many of those 1,500 nahl players over the past 6 years are playing ncaa d1 ? I don’t count ncaa d3 that’s an entirely different avenue. If you have the money, your kid can make ncaa d3 hockey.  On average, It’s usually the top 2 or so players on a nahl team that make it to ncaa d1.

the nahl is a good league, but let’s be real, it’s not the ushl, or on par with some of the Canadian tier 2 leagues.  If I can manage to find it / still have the email - I had a spread sheet sent to me 2-3 years ago that listed every ncaa d1 player, where they came from. I don’t recall  the exact numbers but the ncdc was abysmal with something like 3-4 kids for this given year, the nahl was mid-ish . The majority of the players came out of the ushl, bchl, etc. this is not a shot at at the nahl in anyway, just pointing out how hard it is to become a ncca d1 hockey player, even with the small d1 schools out there.

NAHL is a fantastic league. NAPHL and the NA3 are terrible hockey, those 2 leagues fund the NAHL.

Correct, but it’s only for the current season (It was still that way a few years ago). After the player doesn’t make the team they can still play in other junior leagues. Thus the reason old folks like myself still refer to tenders as a ticket to main camp. Does anyone have access to a current nahl tender contract ? I’d be curious to see how they look today.

the ncdc / usphl is another animal.  I know a player who’s family had to buy his way out of an ncdc contract.  If you’ve ever seen an ncdc contract, you wouldn’t let your kid sign It with out a 100% guarantee in writing your kid will be on the team, playing, and thats not going to happen. You forfeit your rights to any litigation, all matters are decided by the usphl and the usphl only in Boston.

ncdc isnt pay to play, maybe the mentioned player was on a premier team then paying yes button ncdc

Once you get the tender in the first place is the first obstacle. After that, performingbto the required level is up to the player.

tender means nothing but the team owns your rights now.....and you get an invite to main camp ( which about .01 of remark kids actually make). facts are facts dont go by the smoke screen Yuri or Dave tell you.... do some DD and you will see for your self

And in another week, you'll be be able to go to those teams websites which tendered each of them and see that most if not all will have been cut and looking for a place to play.

A Tender doesn't mean anything other than you don't have to pay to tryout. EVERY team in the NAHL is required to tender a specified number of NAPHL players each season. I don't know what that number is but if you look at the quality of most of the other teams in the NAPHL, it's no surprise that Esmark gets a lot of those tenders for their players. They consistently have of the top teams in the 18U age group each season.

very true ive said it before.  Esmark acts all high and mighty with their tenders.... in the last 5-6 seasons 2 yes 2 made nahl teams a goalie and a forward who now has a D1 scholarship!!!!! every other one never sniffed the roster at all and was cut in camp. So those tenders really mean nothing
