As an official, sometimes you do miss the secondary assist, when that occurs I normally ask a coach or the goal scorer something like "which d-man made the 1st pass?" or something along those lines.  They are good with giving me a number 99% of the time and I have to trust that they are going to give me the correct information.  I only ask if I know that there was a 2nd assist and I missed the number, I won't hand out an assist just because a kid skates up to me and claims to have made a pass.

If teams want to send in stats corrections, so be it.  I'll be the first one to admit that I'm not perfect but I can say that I do the best job that I can when I'm out there.  I always wanted my son to get credit for points when he deserved it back when he played so I make it a point to give these kids the same credit today.

Agree--the same goes for me. At the lower levels of PAHL, I really do not care too much about getting assists correct, and often, I will take a coach's word for it. No one knows after the fact because PAHL does not compile such things. Kids and parents like to "brag."

For higher levels, I definitely try to be accurate, and I often work with my partner to get the right numbers.

  2. As someone posted earlier either here or on a different thread, it is not absolutely necessary to spend tons of money to play AAA.

My son played on a high level nationally ranked AA team who went to Tier 2 Nationals consecutively and made the Pitt team without ever going the other expensive routes. I’m referencing the recent high level Pitt teams. And, he didn’t sacrifice his high school years billeting out of town and missing the rites of passage like homecoming and prom.

No criticizing here—just saying it can be done considering a lot of kids end up being behind a few years from going different routes.

This is what creates such confusion with fans, parents, and newer officals for that matter.  There is a black and while rule book with clearly defined actions and options for penalties. However, there is "spirit & intent" of the rule that officials learn as they develop to higher levels.  Officials who apply this "grey area" aka "game management" effectivly are able to move on to upper levels and probably the ones most want on their games.

Unfortuantely, when it comes to playoff time, some of the early developing officals try to make a name for themselves or overthink calls.  This is why you sometimes see off the wall penalties called in playoff rounds as opposed to the regular season.  Also, USAH High-School Nationals were last weekend at Ice-Line in West-Chester.  I suspect the officials working the games were in this mindset with national supervisors in the area.

With possible national supervisors in the building, the ref may have made the call to show they have the "courage" to make that call in a big game...or out of "fear" that if they didn't make the call or call a lesser penalty, they may lose an opportunity to move on to a higher level.  Again, the player opened the door and put the refs in the position to make a grey area call that 1/2 the people will always say was right and 1/2 will say was wrong no matter what reasoning is provided.

By rule was it a "spear" ? - Yes.  Did the action fall under "spirit & intent" of the rule? - No.  Many times officials call half ass spears and "cup-checks" as slashing during the regular season, why change in the playoffs/championship?  Could the ref have called slashing on this play (possible additional 10 min misconduct dependiing on how the game was going at that point), with high level coaches on each bench, in a close state championship game, knowing that GM's and Match penalties carry over to the teams after the player ages out, and nobody including supervisors would have been any the wiser? Probably, but they didn't, they went with 5+G (though I was told the call was a Match)

Very well said. As an official, even though it was (by rule) a spear, I assess a minor for slashing and explain to TJ coach (and other side if needed) what I was doing. And specificlly tell the "spearer," that he is very lucky.

Ive done officiating, umpiring and administration  , Bravo for the above post !

Haha--bottom line is the player speared the kid. Spearing is against the rules in a very clear and specific way. There is no "playoff" rulebook. Of course, with the modern society, the responsibility for one's actions has been eradicated by the "feel good" nature of people. No wonder our country is in such shambles.

It's absolutely crazy.   And I'm going to speak my own opinion here but it hurts the sport from top to bottom.  Ever wonder why after pick 5 or so of the NHL draft it's a total crapshoot?

Your hypothesis is a bit inaccurate, as I know of a couple ——-at least four Pitt players who did not succumb to the allure of the extra “A” and made the Pitt team and excelled.

There is zero need to shell out tons of money to end up on the same place.

The back referee is the exact person to make that call.  That is why they are there.  There is no way the low official could have seen the spear through the crowd.

Again, doesn't matter what the intent was.  USA Hockey is very clear on it.  Any spearing motion is 5+GM at a minimum.

Not exactly sure who that official was, but I am familiar with the process for assigning those officials.  They are all very experienced.

Excellent points, that is what I was trying to convey. But logic doesnt override sour grapes.

Pennsylvania High School Hockey Championships Should used seasoned officials who understand the game and control their emotions and make the calls to the best of their ability. What bothers me is that he didn't talk to his fellow officials that were closer to the play (he was  at blue line and backside official) and did not communicate with TJ bench, which normally better officials do. Player is A Captain and top scorer and I know him to be a very good kid. TJ got a bad deal IMO. Read Coach Zeiler's assessment .....it says it all !

Just because you know him and he is a "good kid" doesn't preclude him from taking an unwise penalty. Are you implying that this official is not experienced? How do you know? Granted, for a critical call such as this, I would have consulted with my partner for sure; however, if an official sees a penalty, no matter where he or she is on the ice, he or she needs to make the call. Again, you are implying that since he was the back official that he could not effectively make this call, which is not a logical statement at all.

The point being that this player committed a spearing penalty in a big game; the rules are clear. There is not a different rulebook when playoffs come around; the key is for the officials to effectively communicate with everyone. But again, it was the player who committed the penalty; he only has himself to blame.

Slightly OT, but how the heck did DF get the position as ED with PAHL when to the best of my knowledge he never had anything to do with them???  WTF?

Regardless, he's done nothing to improve anything since we left a few years back.  Everything still sucks... Just like the WPIAL.

Agree, this guy has no business running any league, save for beer league somewhere. He is part of the good old boy buddy buddy old guard from PIHO and WPHOA.

I responded like this or ignored your post because it serves no purpose. My post has questions and facts that happened. Every word of your post is false or an assumption, why waste my time defending myself because you are butthurt that I called out a ref for having a bad game?

I don't know about you, but at my job I have to answer to someone if I don't perform or do my job to my company's standards.

You lost everyone when you resorted to calling out someone by name. Since you know so much about the game, step up and get your ref credentials next year. You can show everyone how it is to be done. Wait, we will get the "I am too busy" excuse. I am sure Livebarn shows you as such a respectful person on the bench.

Nothing has been posted as of yet and according to some friends who officiate games, there has not been any dates/times sent to prospective referees yet to gauge availability.

Messages have been sent to officials; they asked for availability.

While it certainly isn't right to call the guy out while hiding behind a screen name here, I do agree with the fact that there is nothing to hold the refs accountable. The refs have no real reason to work to get better at their jobs. They are going to keep getting games whether they are good or not.

most refs in this area are not great, but keep in mind that both teams are playing with below average refs so over the long run it should even out.

Well said. This falls in the hands of USA Hockey and MidAm, two organizations that are run by incompetent people and good old boys. The incident report portal is archaic and very difficult to navigate, which is why many officials avoid calling penalties that require a report. Often, player and/or coach names cannot be located or a team is not properly listed. Right or wrong, this is a fact.

I know some officials who take pride in what they do--few, but there are some. These are the people who when seen hitting the ice, the coaches, players, and parents breathe a sigh of relief. Then, there those who when seen hitting the ice, the coaches, players, and parents say, "Oh no--not this clown."

What are the standards that referees are held to?

I agree that most of the time refs are just doing their job and allowing the kids to enjoy playing the game they love to play. I also agree with (for the most part) refs could really careless who wins and loses and they don't go into games thinking positively or negatively about the teams.

I am however curious as to what standards they are held to? They have the power to throw players, fans, coaches out of games that people are paying money to attend or provide to their kids. What about when the refs are terrible? Nothing? Deal with it?

I had one of the worst refs referee my game. Missed calls, weak calls against, goal called that clearly hit the post (overwrote the other ref and made the call from center ice), and yes I got thrown out for arguing the calls after dealing with it for 2 periods. It is humorous because I knew this ref was going to be terrible because he ref'd adult league games back when I played and was terrible at them as well. Now all the info gave above, I would like to know how a guy that seemly likes to get his rocks off on agitating young kids instead of talking to them and explaining infractions. Is power hungry about the fact he can throw people out and affect games instead of just ref'ing them fairly, and now seemly has the ability to keep coaches from coaching their teams is allowed to just be his word is law with no recourse?

Well Tom Chybrzynski Sr, you are in fact the worst ref I have ever seen. Probably a worse person outside of the rink, and if anyone is reading this that schedules refs, I highly suggest you ask for a new one or just play the game with 1 ref.

Normally, I laugh at posts like this and write them off, but I felt like I owed everyone to get it out there.

What a classless post by another angry parent trying to live vicariously through his kid. Calling out an official while hiding behind a message board handle, nice. Who are you to question a call? A missed call? Gimme a break. If you are such a knowledgable hockey person, why not start officiating so you can give back to the game. You would most likely no be able to handle even a 10U B game.
