For those who have/had kids that play for a AA/AAA club team as well as one of the big varsity programs, how do/did you handle situations like this where the varsity team traveled on a weekend and it conflicted with your club schedule?  I’m sure if you ask each coach, their team takes priority.  It works out when PIHL teams stay to the weekdays and club plays on weekends.

My son has been in this situation a few times, including this year.  Fortunately, the club team he plays for has several players who go to the same tournaments, so they do not schedule any games on those weekends.  With that said, his Varsity team also has had players who played for Esmark and skip the HS tournaments.

From what I've seen, it's mostly the kids who play AAA who skip the HS tournaments, even if their AAA team isn't any better than AA.

  2. To  add...If I remember correctly, starting at 16U, PAHL gives the clubs an option (w/ the max allowed game length) to do an ice cut after the 2nd.  Most clubs choose not to.  Armstrong is the only organization I can think of that does ice cuts after the 2nd.

Newbie, has there ever been one of these? At any age group? Is there any team of theirs who has actually finished the season ranked above 50 in AAA?

15U  finished 33rd in 2017-18 for Tier 1.  Think they were the kids brought over from NP...

I should add - when talking to a friend who once worked for usa hockey (in Denver) we were talking junior hockey. He made this comment.

“hockey is the first sport to figure out how to keep making money off kids once they age out of youth. Keep selling the dream until they are 21”.

    he’s damn right.

Which is why my son is going straight to college when he graduates high school.  He is capable of playing ACHA, so if the school has a team, he can play if he chooses.  Most of the  kids spending $$$ to play Juniors end up in the same place as a player right out of high school...the money spent could probably pay a year (or two) of tuition at some schools.

  5. Did a little digging and found this, supposedly from USA Hockey:

For the Tier II divisions of USA Hockey, districts do not matter. States that make the decision to send teams to Nationals are then split into three levels: 3A, 2A, and 1A. The teams that go into the different levels are determined by the number of registered players per capita with the largest states, such as New Jersey, New York, or Michigan, being placed into 3A, the middle ones going into 2A and the smallest ones, such as Montana and Louisiana, going into 1A. If a team wins its level, they are declared national champions. Different levels do not play each other.

I was just taking a look at tier 2 - when did mid am become a 2a district ???!? I noticed at U18 armstrong is playing for 2A nationals.

I noticed the same...I thought MidAm was usually 3a.  All three teams last season were 3a.  This season, Allegheny and SCIR are 3a while Armstrong is 2a.  Odd.

I am unaware of the format for Nationals at the HS level, so does anyone know why / how Bishop Canavin was placed and not other higher quality local HS teams?  Was it because of the timing of the Penguins Cup?

They had a rough showing and went 0-3 with GF / GA of 3-14.

I've asked the same.  I think you just have to be registered as a National Bound team, apply to MidAm and be approved.  The teams at HS Nationals vary greatly in strength.  One score was 22-0.  Looking at the teams this year, I think the top PIHL AAA/AA teams could do very well.

I think PIHL teams never enter because it always conflicts with the Penguins/PA Cup.

  8. Not sure what the attendance would be at PPG but RMU and UPMC are both too small for the Pens or PA Cup.  I've been to both several times pre COVID and more recently as well.  Unless your your connected to either team, it can be difficult to get tickets.

PPG is too big but unfortunately, there's no other facility in the area that falls in between.  Would love to see it there with HS bands to give it a NCAA game atmosphere.

I played at Mellon Arena several times in HS and even though it was too hot and the ice was terribly slow, it was still special to be there...I think most players would feel the same about PPG.

@Pa Hockey are you sure about the March 26 date for state finals?  That's not published anywhere that I can find.

It's published on PIHL's homepage under Important Dates...the games will be played at Ice Line in Westchester.

    Here's the schedule:

Yeah, that's true. Minnesota and New England could have their own high school Nationals haha. I did notice Pope Francis Prep (MA) and Edina (MN) were in the 2021 Nationals field, so maybe better teams are starting to attend?

Edina brought their Junior Gold A team, which is what MN schools send to the Notre Dame Tourney.  This year it was Wayzata and Maple Grove.  Their Varsity Teams would crush everyone...that said, a MN HS Junior Gold team has won USA Hockey Nationals in the past...which is saying something since these teams typically consist of players who didn't make Varsity or JV.

As for how they qualify, I've always been confused about it since it's different than Youth Tier 1/2.  This is from USA Hockey's Guidebook:

    High School Divisions
Any high school team that is properly registered with USA Hockey as a High School national championship bound team in one of the four divisions (Division I, Division II, Prep School Division, or Girls Division).  Representation from each state will be determined by the state affiliate participating in the tournament.
For districts only, these rules and regulations may be modified for local and state association competition and districts that are composed of a single state, as conditions may require.Player eligibility regulations may not be less restrictive than those governing national championships.

This is simply not true for the 18U Foxes.

Yes it is.  If any player sat out, it was because of injury.   I know of two players who are injured...one from the tourney last weekend with the Foxes and another from Thursday in their game against CC.

Allegheny might since Foxes best players are in the stands.

NA has injured players including at least one who plays on the Foxes.  He also didn't play in NA's final reg season game on Thursday.  And one other may have been injured on Thur...
