They can "vote" all they want. They have no say on whether the sports will start or not. We have already passed the point of no return with their input mattering. The decision will be above them. Just my 2 cents

It is, just organizations don't want to acknowledge it ($$$$) and parents are blind to it. Mark my word, you heard it here first, there will be no fall sports of any kind (high school or travel). It is what it is, they are not going to allow it until after November.

Look up CPJHL on Wikipedia and take special note of the "Former Teams" section. Teams folding before playing, teams folding for not enough players? That don't sound right. If it was me, I would stay away. You say he was offered a contract, did the coaches ever come see him play, talk to you and he after a game or tournament? Did he go up and skate with the team or tryout? Or did you get an email from them that said something like, "hey I saw some film on you, or our scouting department said they watched you play, etc.." Unless they got with your kid before or after a game and you specifically saw them watching him play, I would stay away. The whole recruiting through email is something to be weary of. Just my 2 cents. Again, we are all just trying to help.

You asked the question. You can go on any of the team websites or email them, and they will give you costs. How much does Junior Hockey cost, it depends. That is just too broad a question to ask, without more detail being needed. Anywhere from close to 10 grand, to almost free. If you and your kid are looking to be able to say the whole, "yea, little Johnny played Junior hockey up in Canada", then go for it. If you think it's actually going to lead somewhere, then don't waste your money. We are not trying to piss you off, everyone above was just stating facts.

Gonna need a little more to go on than this. What does an "opportunity" mean? You got an email? He is going to tryout? He has been offered a spot? Also, what Canadian Junior Team? Much like in the US, there is a wide gap in Juniors. Are you asking if he should accept an offered spot on an OHL level team or the Vengeance? Please elaborate.

Thanks for the insight, I did not know that. When my kid was playing the only real powerhouse in Chicago was the Mission and Fury (he never played against the Fury though). Little Ceasars was tough and so were the Junior Sabre's, and Jr Admirals . I was shocked to see the Texas and California teams. Also, Ashburn was ok back in the day, but I got to say when he was playing AA he probably had a winning record against Ashburn 1 at 16U. Again, he hasn't played youth hockey in 6 years, so a lot of things may have have changed

Spot-on assessment Danner. I think this is where most people get confused. Thinking Western PA is on the same level as Minn, Wisconsin, Chicago, Buffalo, Boston, etc... It's not even close.

I guess I don't feel as strongly about this because when I go out in public, I wear a mask and if I see someone not wearing one, I stay at least 6ft away from them. I really don't care if anyone else wears one or not. If you want to wear one, great, I'll get a little closer to you in the supermarket. If you don't, great, I'll just keep my distance, and let you catch a disease and kill yourself. If you want to drive the speed limit, great, I'll drive along side you. If you want to drive 100mph, great, I'll keep my distance and let you go down the road and kill yourself. I guess what I am saying is my problem is really that I don't give a crap what anyone else does, what they spend their money on, how they vote, or in all honesty whether they live or die. I guess I'm just a "jagoff".

So why is it that any article you look at prior to 2019 says mask wearing does not reduce the spread of viruses? I mean almost everyone article says the same thing, now it's the greatest thing since slides bread. Do you want me to add links to like 20-30 of these? I just don't understand what is different about this. And since you brought it up, why are we still seeing doctors and other medical experts still staying it doesn't do much?

I'm torn on this whole mask thing. When you go back a read articles from 2018 and prior, they all say wearing a mask does nothing to prevent the spread of virus and disease, but now they are saying it is the best thing to prevent the spread. So, I don't really know what to think. It almost feels like a symbolic thing as opposed to something that that really contributes. Kind of like a politician that will take a knee to symbolize they oppose racism but not do anything for true reform. They are viewed in a positive way. Yet another who would work to pass legislation for true reform, yet says I'm not kneeling because it's just a "symbol" is viewed in a negative way. I just don't get it sometimes.

Wow, $20 for a tryout? Maybe my kid should have played in Pittsburgh. I had no idea the costs were so low. Where we lived I don't ever remember paying less than $100 and that was over 8 years ago. I would have thought tryout fees were close to $200 by now.

No he got he feelings hurt once because a bunch of really good players tried out for his for his "also-ran" team and left him at the alter. Not what my kid did at all. He tried out for teams he thought he had no shot at, and if he read my original post he would have seen that. He would have also seen that it was in response to a person who stated that, "he had no idea why kids and parents would tryout for teams above their playing level just to get blasted on the ice". And I explained why. Not to mention that most organizations will charge an additional refundable fee if you make it to the final round (their way to protect against better kids who have no intentions of playing) and in some cases we have actually signed a contract that says, "if you are offered a spot you will accept it", also another way to protect the organization. If this guy doesn't like players shopping around, maybe he shouldn't hold tryouts? Oh wait, it's ok for teams to tell a kid, "sorry kid your just not good enough". But it's not ok for the player to say, "sorry team, I don't think I want to play here". SMH

Well Jack, you obviously didn't read all of my post, so I'll say it again. You also didn't quote all of it (you must work for CNN). As I stated in my original post, these were all HIGHER teams that he didn't think he had a shot at making, which is why I called it a tune up. He actually made 2 of the 3 teams he did this with. Accepted one of the invitations, so it wasn't really a tune up that time. Declined another (and in hind-site wishes he had taken it), so we can call that one a tune up. Didn't make the 3rd, and to be honest was better off without making that team, so not really a tune up there either. Now let's move on to your statement that kids using tryouts as a tune-up RAISES costs for everyone else. Please tell me how MORE kids attending tryouts RAISES costs? I would think if a whole bunch of kids show up, the price would actually go down. Oh wait, in reality the 2 have nothing to do with each other, The costs are high because organizations use this as a money grab, just like everything else. So, by your logic my son shouldn't have tried out for those teams that he didn't think he had a shot at making to use this as practice for later tryouts? Well then, I sure hope your organization then turns away kids who really do want to be on the team but in reality have no shot at making it and save their parents some $$$$. The door swings both ways Jack. Sorry, not buying your logic on this one.

When my kid was playing he actually did this as a "tune-up" a few times. If there was a high-level team that had tryouts the week before the team he wanted, he would go and just get used to the fast pace of tryouts, then be better prepared the following week. 2 out of 3 times he actually got offered a spot on the higher-level team. Once, he took it and he had a decent year, and loved the players. Once he declined it, and is actually a big regret to this day because the team he thought he wanted was actually filled with kids who were just idiots (and so were there parents). The final time he didn't get offered a spot, got on the team he wanted and that team turned out to be better than the supposed higher-level team.

Yes, hockey tryouts. Some may get run before they cancel everything again. Don't really see the point in trying out for a season that probably won't happen. Mark my word, there are a bunch of ACHA Teams that are looking to not field teams this fall because schools have already reached out to the and said no travel. I imagine youth sports will be in a similar situation.

I guess I'm just one of the jerks who thinks this whole thing is a load of garbage. Up until 2020 every article on the spread of diseases and viruses said masks didn't work. Go look it up if you don't believe me. Plus take a look at some of the new packaging that is coming out, where it says right on the box, does not protect against the spread of COVID-19. Then, we were told, "this is going to kill you"! Now you have all these people telling me I could have it and don't even know it, and I could be infecting people without realizing it. Then, they could get it (and not know it) and spread it to others. So what. To tell you the truth, I really don't care if I get it or not anymore. I guess it's because I don't know of anyone who has gotten it, nor do I know someone who knows someone who has gotten it (please don't tell me you stories about your mother or uncle who has it and had rough time, I don't "know" any of you, and can guarantee I have never met any of you either). Now we have to "rush" to get a vaccine, and just wait until a year or so from now, when they find out that there is some side effect to this, and every ambulance chaser in the business will have ads during Wheel of Fortune saying, "did you wear a mask during COVID-19 now have this issue"? "Do you get a COVID-19 vaccine, now your pee is green"? Quick call our law offices now and we'll get money for you! Or, the next great pandemic that the oh so trustworthy news will come up with. I think I am just going to but stock in the mask companies, Lexan barrier builders and retire. I guess in the end we'll just agree to disagree. I haven't been in an ice rink in close to 2 years and to tell you the truth I couldn't be happier. I'll just stay in my house, send the wife to the store and not have to put up with any of this nonsense. I will however respect y'alls opinions. Hopefully, one day things will get back to normal, but I have little faith in that.

Thanks for the input. I guess that is it, there are people at all ages that take it serious and some that don't. Both my kids seem to take this way too serious for my taste, but to each their own.

Ok, we are going to take it back down to a civil tone. Serious question for you. Do you have any kids that are in their 20's? I do, the last time my kid or any of his friends were in a bar was St Patrick's day. Both he and my 21 year old take this a lot more seriously than I do. Walk around Oakland sometime. They are wearing masks when they are walking around outside, the Oakland bars have not reopened, and the Southside is filled with 30 and 40 year olds. Trust me, the majority of college kids are doing their part. At least you and I will agree on one thing, this did not start with some bat in a market.

It will never happen. It's not round 2 that we need to be worried about, it's round 7. That's going to be the "big" one everybody. Look out for that round for sure. There is no "backing away from the door", that ship has sailed. This is the new normal. 15 people jammed inside a bar will spread the virus like wildfire, (please note that 1,000 people looting a Target will not spread it though), the virus cannot be spread while committing acts of social justice.

So a serious question. You see all these athletes, both college and pro showing up to camp and getting tested then coming up positive. I will assume most if not all of them didn't know they had it (i.e. no symptoms). They were not someone who started feeling sick and went to the hospital. So, is it safe to assume that the majority of people at this young an age and in this good of shape, never know they have it? If so, is it possible they have had it for a long time (i.e. from the time you catch it till it goes away, how long is that)? Or is there something else at play? How reliable is the test (type 1 errors vs type 2)? Is it possible that with all this extra testing going on, these people really don't have it and it is just a measurement system error? Thoughts?
