Vengeance/SCIR - where do you draw the line?
Jack Handey replied to Jack Handey's topic in Western Pennsylvania Youth Hockey
Yeah, like when a Renegades team rolls into a PAHL game with SCIR jerseys/shells/socks but all the kids have red helmets on. Pretty sure that red isn't in the SCIR color scheme. Is SCIR used as a fundraiser for the red helmet crew? -
Vengeance/SCIR - where do you draw the line?
Jack Handey replied to Jack Handey's topic in Western Pennsylvania Youth Hockey
So if Vengeance is for-profit, and SCIR is not, can someone clear up how the programs interact? Are my SCIR fees going to pay for Vengeance expenses? -
Midam/USA hockey decision on hockey
Jack Handey replied to Wes's topic in Western Pennsylvania Youth Hockey
Maybe we should just call it an educational opportunity. Like when your write your kid's absence excuse for their tournament with Friday games. -
Looks like the bill was referred to a committee. Not sure if that's progress or normal or what to think.

House Bill 2787 seems specific to school sports. How is this applicable to ice rinks or hockey? https://www.legis.state.pa.us/CFDOCS/Legis/PN/Public/btCheck.cfm?txtType=PDF&sessYr=2019&sessInd=0&billBody=H&billTyp=B&billNbr=2787&pn=4258

Wondering if we can agree on what is the right minimum headcount for hockey? I think the worst case would be Tier 1 midget AAA , which would require: 20 players per team x 2 teams = 40 players 1 coach x 2 teams = 2 coaches 1 EMT 1 scorekeeper/timekeeper 2 refs (or say 4 if linesmen needed) Looks like to run a full game, like a Mid-Am Tier I playoff game, we need to allow 48 bodies in the theater. Are penalty box assistants required at Tier I ? Not sure the answer. Anyone else critical or required to the process? In case we want to write that recommended letter to our law makers...

This couldn't hurt either. Write to our governor! https://www.governor.pa.gov/contact/#OnlineForm -
Midam/USA hockey decision on hockey
Jack Handey replied to Wes's topic in Western Pennsylvania Youth Hockey
Thanks for that. Letter sent to both my representative and senator. Everyone should do this. Also hearing a few state legislators are holding a meeting at Delmont later this week. Thanks to Mindy @ Center Ice Arena for setting that up. -

I get that but a mandate is a mandate is a mandate. There is no other interpretation of 25 max. -

How is it that state mandates apply to Baierl and Mt Lebo but not Alpha or Ice Castle? Apparently some rinks have seceded from the commonwealth. -
Looks like it can be configured to cover mouth/nose area only. Probably not going to fog up.

Telling if true. @Danner27 could you confirm? Any of your sons or sons' teammates play professionally? -
PA AAA YOUTH LEAGUE..why not?
Jack Handey replied to un joueur de hockey's topic in Western Pennsylvania Youth Hockey
The trouble with the lower AAA teams is that they are unicorns. Same story every year - a dad recruits and builds a good team around his kid, hoarding tier II talent until they can't be beat in tier II. From there, there is nowhere to go but Tier I. As we've discussed prior, I don't blame Mt Lebo dad for moving their 04 group to AAA. AA was a cake walk; coasted through Tier II Mid-Am two years ago. Had respectable showing at Tier 1 Mid-Am this year. The 05 team is definitely not the same unicorn though. They could still be competitive at AA so I don't really get that move. -

Some AA, and some A Major even. -
PA AAA YOUTH LEAGUE..why not?
Jack Handey replied to un joueur de hockey's topic in Western Pennsylvania Youth Hockey
I'm guessing the AAA pretenders will have to play some local AA/Tier II teams this year. Just to get games in. -
PA AAA YOUTH LEAGUE..why not?
Jack Handey replied to un joueur de hockey's topic in Western Pennsylvania Youth Hockey
There are only 1-2 legit programs locally so not enough to form a league. A better idea would be a regional multi-state Tier II/AA league. -
Wow. He can't play by rules, but has no problem warning everyone else about the rule benders. You win the ironic post of the day.

KDKA reports 2 North Hills school players are positive for Covid-19. They allege it may have spread at the school's tryout. https://pittsburgh.cbslocal.com/2020/07/02/two-north-hills-students-test-positive-for-coronavirus-after-attending-unsanctioned-hockey-tryouts-families-warned-of-potential-outbreak/ One question: why is the tryout on June 27 considered to be "unsanctioned"?

For anyone requesting to see their org's income statement, be sure to check in with the board members who set pricing, and ask them why tryouts are so high. Most orgs will be honest and set the record straight. Prices are inflated to right size the candidate pool. This is Econ 101 and a technique that most boards use to ensure high acceptance rates of placements. It will be up to you to judge the character in their response. And by the way, yes, the tryout fees get chalked up on the balance sheet as revenue. Is the intent to gouge their own members or fundraise? No. It's a weed-out play, plain and simple. I'll go ahead and predict the king will come back with the same old song and dance and say that you can't trust board members because they are lying and covering up some payoff or immoral behavior. Does it happen? Yes. Is it typical? No. But it is clearly the king's anecdotal experience, and it has poisoned him. That and/or he's feeling the sting from a hand slap by some regional affiliate. Whatever. Spare us your overdone broken record response.
-
LOL. Let's just run tryouts at cost. Why not double or triple our candidate count. We can increase declines from 5%-10% to 50%-60%. We can have constant roster instability all summer long as players quit and hop from $20 tryout to $20 tryout. This is great. We'll name it the King tryout model. Seems just about right for 2020.
-
...and that's we we have high tryout fees. Tryouts are not an intentional money maker as some have speculated. Most youth orgs are 501(c)3s and aren't in place to make money. Tryouts HAVE to be painfully expensive to prevent the tune up mentality and the constant shopping that goes on. It also wastes of a lot of people's time when you do this.

plus it's "18u prep" now. Does that mean there is a school or academy requirement now? that would add a hefty price tag and force many prospects out.
