So true...many teams do very little to nothing for goalies, and finding time for lessons when your kid is playing amateur and school hockey while trying to also get him some needed rest is a next to impossible.
-
My son did lessons with him at Baierl the first year Shane had his sheet there. Always thought he was a little odd. He just moved from Sioux City and Shane told me he had been scouting for the Musketeers. It was also during COVID and it was convenient since his HS team played out of there. Looked at my phone and still have pages of texts with him. Very sad to think about the monster he may be. With that said, Shane was his his first coach at 12U and we often traveled to Alpha for lessons. I thought Shane was good...definitely a different personality, but he knows his stuff and he'll tell you like it is. For the last few years of HS, he ended up going to Mike Chiasson at UPMC, who he really liked. it was convenient because I could just register him online when he wanted to go and there was usually only a few other goalies there. Plus, the shooters were usually top notch. As Wes said, Goalie coaches can really only help you with technique and do drills that try to simulate game situations. In the end, playing in games and analyzing plays with video is the best way to learn and identify where you need to improve or adjust how you read plays. Kenny Reiter was probably the best coach my son had when he was at NP. He would help out with goalie training and was solid in everything he taught. Not sure if he is still involved with coaching or not. Don't overdo it - you don't want your kid to need hip surgery at 20. Also, I think it's good idea to have several coaches throughout your career to soak in different philosophies. My .02. I could talk about goaltending for hours...

The starting SV goalie for the '18 Penguins Cup Championship game was Logan Johnson...
-
My son has played with many SV players over the years, and I remember talking to SV parents who were in the room over 6 years ago. I was told they had been trying to get rid of Raco, but then they won the Penguins Cup in 2018, so that kind of squashed any of their attempts for the years that followed.. I guess they finally got their wish...

Having a nice on campus facility would be huge for RMU. While it won't make them a consistent power, it should get them to another level. I went to school that has a NCAA D1 program and students lined up outside to get into each home game. Granted, it is a larger school in a much stronger conference (CCHA at the time), but I can't see that happening if the rink was a 10-15 min drive off campus.

This is their Junior Gold A team. MN also has Junior Gold B. From my understanding, these consist of players who did not make their Varsity or JV teams. My son has played against a few of them and from what I have seen, the top JGA teams are typically competitive with WPA's top PIHL teams. If you look at JGA MHR, Edina is ranked number one in MN and has a 88.91 rating. They beat NA (88.46) in 2OTs, so I guess in this case, MHR is pretty accurate.

What will happen to the good 2009 AA PAHL teams?
sarampage replied to RJUSHL's topic in Western Pennsylvania Youth Hockey
I know there's a demand for it, which is why organizations and some leagues are accommodating, but if the goal is to go to USA Hockey Nationals, Tier II 15U teams will be playing 16U anyways, so why not put together the strongest team consisting of 08/09s? One of my son's teams went to Nationals at 16U and they had a few minor BY players on their team...it made them stronger and without them, they may not have won Districts. I understand the argument for 15U teams and Showcases, tournaments, etc. but in end, they're playing 16U. -

Once they get to the 15U/16U age, it doesn't really matter as much, IMO. The gap in maturity has decreased..some of these kids are are playing PIHL Varsity against 18 year olds by this time. BY teams for Tier II don't make a lot of sense to me...put the best kids on the 16U AA team regardless of whether they are a 2008 or 2009. If you adhere strictly to the BY model, the organization's 16U AA will be weaker and if you have kids play up on the 16s, the 15s will be weaker. Until USA Hockey recognizes Tier II 15U, I don't see the point. When my son was a PeeWee, I thought it was preferable, but as the years went on and seeing him play PAHL16U AA , 18U AA and PIHL AAA, I started to think differently. -
Unfortunately, the latter two are newer USA Hockey rules and PAHL decided to adopt them, unlike PIHL. I don't mind the no icing on a penalty kill that much, but the FPPs and auto offsides are ridiculous.

That's what they did several years ago when.they first moved to SE. They mistakenly had all stats available for players and goalies for a few weeks. Then they shut it down. It was fun while it lasted...

Yes....so true. My son has been fortunate to play on a top 20 18U AA and top 25 16U AA team over the last few years, with one going to Nationals. At the time, we had at least 2 other teams in our division ranked in the top 10-30 as well I remember looking at other districts and thought...outside of Central States and maybe Michigan, we have it so tough....you see the same teams/organizations in other districts going to Nationals practically every year because they have no competition...

Minot State played the 20th ranked NCAA team, Colorado College, last night and lost 7-1. I did not watch the game, but from looking at the box score, CC played their 2nd and 3rd string goalies. Shots were 31-15. Minot plays #5 Denver tonight..a NCHC.tv subscription is needed to watch. https://cctigers.com/sidearmstats/mhockey/summary;team=away;category=goalies -
WPA ACHA College Club Hockey
sarampage replied to Danner27's topic in Western Pennsylvania Youth Hockey
Club hockey is all over the place. As Saucy said, teams are.much more difficult to make and depending on the school, commitment levels can be very high. I know some very good players that have been cut at some larger school ACHA teams. Sometimes it tough to compete with 21-22 year old freshman with more maturity and experience. My son was contacted by several ACHA teams from M1 to M3, in addition to some Tier II/III Junior scouts. He ended up at Pitt with a very difficult major and decided he didn't want to commit to hockey. Playing Juniors was not an option since playing NCAA was never a goal. He just wanted to get on with life... Can't remember if this has been posted before, but I came across.this article from June about club hockey. Pretty interesting.... https://www.neutralzone.net/mens/2023/06/21/get-to-know-non-ncaa-club-college-hockey/ -

A few years ago, before Lindenwood went NCAA D1, their ACHA team played Denver and lost 9-1. Denver played their scrubs and outshot them 58-14. https://denverpioneers.com/news/2021/10/2/du-pioneers-hockey-defeats-lindenwood-in-exhibition.aspx This season, Minot State gets a shot at Colorado College and Denver on 12/29 and 12/30. https://msubeavers.com/news/2023/3/1/mens-hockey-minot-state-hockey-to-clash-with-ncaa-national-champion-denver-pioneers.aspx -
Printscape Rink 2 Problems
sarampage replied to sackbear's topic in Western Pennsylvania Youth Hockey
Jimmy did much more than that. LED lighting was the first upgrade followed by renovating all locker rooms and bathrooms. Also added a locker room and upgraded the cooling.systems in both rinks. Fresh paint everywhere as well....I'm sure I'm missing more.q Yes, the benches are way too small... that's a tough one if you have the existing footprint to work with. -
This should provide some answers... https://collegehockeyinc.com/recruiting.php

NCAA rules for D1 Ice Hockey. August 1 is the date when recruits can start taking official visits and receive verbal scholarship offers (prior to their Junior year).

One went to the Gulls...and he just verbally committed to PSU.

Same here. My wife graduated from IUP and I have a few friends who played football there 30 years ago. They're all very successful in their careers. I also spent a few weekends there back in the day and thought it had a lot to offer at the price and provided a decent college town experience. -

For AAA, all the schools are Private so they always have an advantage. The LaSalle team that won a few years ago against NA had 3 future NCAA D1 players with one (Lipkin) being drafted by the Coyotes and playing World Juniors for Team USA this year.
