Jack Handey
Until there is split season in Pittsburgh, it's really a bad idea to promote and hold high school weekend tournaments. Weekends are for youth teams around these parts. Let the kids and parents enjoy their AAA, independent, and PAHL teams. Stay in your swim lane.

Saucey
These are excellent events. Well run with good competition. There is way more exposure here for a kid who is not playing AAA, which is most kids playing high school hockey. There were college coaches occasionally in attendance, which I can't say ever happened with anything we ever did with travel. And they are way more fun to attend than any tournament we ever did through travel. The travel tournament is way overrated IMHO. All those games... it's only good for the rinks and tournament directors. Once they reach checking and a more adult stature, one game a day is all they should be playing. Takes a huge toll on their body.
Jack Handey
Who wants to pay to be on two teams and then have to decide which way they are going on the weekend? Hard pass. People who 'clear their schedule' wind up hamstringing their youth team in the process. Seen it time and time again. Ask any of the Central kids and parents who were on Foxes last year. Bad for local hockey.

Bad for local hockey. Not to pile on too much, but it is also obviously a bit unfair when you consider some high schools can play 60 games and some barely get 20. I know a lot goes into it, but the fact that a high school team is even allowed that many games is kind of ridiculous. You wouldn't ever hear the end of it if a local HS football team flew to Florida every weekend in the spring to play games, yet it is very easy to imagine a high school hockey team doing something similar. Spear not many if any HS Teams play 60 Games (Maybe 30-35 is more like it) . These Tournaments are a great opportunity to play schools from other areas and prepare for the Penguins Cup and State Run and that's the goal for most HS Programs. Many players play a dual 2nd 16 U or 18 U Tier 2 to get a crack at Districts an get additional ice time taking the schedule to 50-60 Games, which is a lot less than 60 - 80 some AAA programs play. HS is the opportunity to "get additional ice time", but the priority is their team, especially if national bound. Again - you fix all of this with a split season.

I've never liked the idea of a split season for National Bound teams. First half of the season ends in October then the team is only back together for a few practices before States/Districts.

Bad for local hockey. That depends on your perspective. At 18u, that entire play level is a crap shoot anyway. To me, 18u is bonus hockey by that age as kids begin to focus on life after high school. It isn't the priority of most kids by that time.

Any 16u AA or A Major team has the same problem because most of those kids are playing varsity too. Hey, at 16u/18u, I agree their focus expands beyond hockey. There is social life, part-time jobs, girlfriends, etc. Add to that, you lose a few weekends for standardized tests, a few weekends for homecoming and other dances. There just isn't time in the course of the season for HS teams to hog entire weekends. And there's no recourse for the youth teams - their swim lane is fixed to Saturday and Sunday, and they can't decide to move PAHL games or weekend tournament games to a random Monday Tuesday or Thursday.

I am sure it depends on how good your HS team is, too. The HS teams that are playing weekend tournaments, those kids would pick that over the travel. My kids are over the travel tournament in general. A couple every year since they were nine...yeah.
