  1. The more I think about this, with all the issues including the hard boards/bowl shape, and the high roof, one solution would be to fill in the bowl completely and build the rink and stands at ground level. That decision though should have come when the roof collapsed, and not now. But being that there is a long list of issues/needs for this rink as of right now, that would be WAY to cost prohibitive. I am thinking it would likely be less expensive (and more practical) to build a new building somewhere with 2 sheets, and a structure like Center Ice (steel beams that cover 2 rinks, low ceilings with insulation), than it would be sink another $1m into Rostraver on top of the purchase price. It does sound like re-purposing the building might be a more practical thing than trying to sort out all the hockey related issues, and believe me I don't want to see another rink close. I have been to MANY rinks around the country and for sure Rostraver (unfortunately) is one of the least desirable rinks.

  2. Until there is split season in Pittsburgh, it's really a bad idea to promote and hold high school weekend tournaments. Weekends are for youth teams around these parts. Let the kids and parents enjoy their AAA, independent, and PAHL teams. Stay in your swim lane.

  3. Cal ? Maybe the school should buy it. I feel like someone once said when they started to remodel that school years ago a rink was being put in with the basketball facility or started but the state cut the funding. nobody is advocating for the rink to go away, as another poster said the writing is on the wall. I don’t think it makes it through next season if the church really wants it. They will pay the high asking price. if something happens to murph you can bet that family takes the first offer regardless what it is.

  4. Who wants to pay to be on two teams and then have to decide which way they are going on the weekend? Hard pass. People who 'clear their schedule' wind up hamstringing their youth team in the process. Seen it time and time again. Ask any of the Central kids and parents who were on Foxes last year. Bad for local hockey.

  5. I agree. In Rostraver's early days, the fact that it was the only game in town probably mattered more than the location. Even Lebo was built in the late 70s, Rostraver still had the advantage of relatively scarce ice. But now, YMCA (Bethel), Printscape (Southpointe), Lebo, Ice Castle, Center Ice, and Connellsville are all just close enough to be a problem. YMCA closed a sheet a few years ago and Connellsville is always in a state of disarray, so maybe it's just a matter of which domino falls first, but something is going to lose for sure. I would think if you are going to open another rink anywhere in the area, it would not be in the Mon Valley. Maybe closer to the new developments in the North Hills would be the best choice, but I think just about anywhere but the Mon Valley would be a better choice.

  6. Yes, I believe State College has had a few over the years, mainly at younger age groups, but that was years ago. Those teams seemed to have broken up and players have moved on to other organizations. Looks like none of those organizations have anything above "A" anymore.

  7. These are excellent events. Well run with good competition. There is way more exposure here for a kid who is not playing AAA, which is most kids playing high school hockey. There were college coaches occasionally in attendance, which I can't say ever happened with anything we ever did with travel. And they are way more fun to attend than any tournament we ever did through travel. The travel tournament is way overrated IMHO. All those games... it's only good for the rinks and tournament directors. Once they reach checking and a more adult stature, one game a day is all they should be playing. Takes a huge toll on their body.

  8. Other than midstate I’ve yet to see a AA team from that area. That’s pretty sad considering the Cambria team has been around a long time.

  9. Arrows were strong at 18U last year, but will lose many of their players who are aging out or off the college, correct?
