  2. I get guys wanting to continue to play, but it's really just not needed. The level of play is not as strong as the better mens leagues around here. This is essentially faux AAA for adults.

  3. It no longer works *because it ONLY shows the players’ names and games played—it does not show anything else at all. It’s like for the PAHL to use Sports Engine, they have to include something in their website data. So, if you think about it…what’s the least bit of information that we can make public and still get away with “providing data” to Sports Engine and meet their criteria. That would be listing names and games played. The PAHL made a conscious decision to close the loophole when it became public knowledge that the game sheets were available for everyone to see. I’ll maintain my view on this. What was wrong with keeping the status quo? Nobody complained about it. Nobody was up in arms because Timmy had an extra assist; or Bobby was an Apple shy of a Playmaker Award—do they still give these awards out? Probably not, if nobody knows. My whole contention was the PAHL is deliberately removing, or hiding information that was once public. It’s information that is obviously tabulated and recorded. It’s information that other Tier 2 competitive leagues make readily available. It’s not the professional level of analytics that we’re talking about. It’s just the basics of what hockey has always used when scoring. It’s the equivalent of removing the baseball scorekeeper and scoresheets.

  4. 100% - publish them anytime possible, but once published they're final. Parents F off. Don't get me wrong, so do I enjoy seeing my kid's accomplishments where others can see them on web pages such as the PIHL and others as they progressed. However, having watched any of those games I will also know which kid won important face-offs. Blocked shots, hard fore-check, positioning and all the other things nemesis mentioned are what create good hockey players and better teammates. I can leave the rink knowing his stats, if any but more importantly acknowledge the little things that few people notice. Sort of like Lindsey Horan said about US soccer fans, this really does apply to a lot of hockey parents. For the 14 and under crowd on here, don't get so caught up in the skills training as there is far too much of that. Find Coaches who will teach your kid how to play the game and they will be successful not only in hockey, but in life.

  5. Congratulations to all the teams that won their Divisions this weekend. Too bad all we get is scores! No game sheets to see how the games went! Or for that matter any coverage at all. Does PAHL have a facebook or Twitter site? It's ashamed how far behind Black Bear Tier 2 they are. Hopefully we will be able to find the MidAms on Score Sheet this weekend. If PAHL is not going to recognize their top AA players, I would suggest all those teams Join the Atlantic Hockey Federation and have their own Western PA Division.

  6. The people that are in St Louis are thrilled. It's their first Nationals and that is always special and exciting. Huge for St Vincent and the Martz (father-son) coaching tandem. Big congratulations to their program

  10. Perkiomen Valley is a public school and about the same size as the AAA schools out here, but you are right that AAA is dominated by private schools. I don't know what the answer is, but I do think making them play the biggest classification is a good solution.

  11. Anyone else find it odd that PIHL has chosen to play EVERY single one of these games at Ice Castle? I'm sure the teams from the north and east are just tickled about that.

  12. I’d say that there’s probably a sizable disparity at 3A and 2A divisions as well. I mean, the coaching staffs at all of the 3A schools really have the ability (or at least a lot of leeway) in hand-picking the best players in Eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey. They aren’t hemmed in by school district borders with nothing but the luck of the draw when they see who shows up at tryouts. I’m not seeing the even playing field when you have Flyers Cup 3A coach at Parochial Prep HS show up at a Bantam (or maybe younger than 14U) showcase with a bunch of enticing Parochial Prep merch, and freebies while sniffing out the top end hockey players and parents…telling them that he can assist with admissions, fundraising, sponsorships for their son and how it’s so much better playing hockey with him at Parochial Prep rather than playing at Hoboken HS. I don’t know what the solution is exactly; but you gotta believe that there’s the potential to have all kinds of corruption going on when you basically have a small college atmosphere and can recruit players under the guise of “Student-Athletes.” I could be way off base (I do not have any first hand knowledge—just stories I’ve heard from others). But, I think that it’s naive to think that there’s no in-season tampering, or maybe even under the table money exchanges going to some players for “X”, or for after school jobs that don’t exist. It really is something special when the occasional Pens Cup winner bests Eastern PAs Flyers Cup champion.

  13. Yea that is how they do it out east. All private schools must play AAA. It pushes all the large public schools down which is why you get the massive disparity between east and west at the A level. Typically the top A teams out east are schools are as big or bigger than some of the AAA schools here.

  14. So, looking at all of the AAA schools in Eastern Pennsylvania playing for the Flyers Cup…all of the schools listed are private schools. They don’t have one public school with a delineated line that separates one school district from another. I think that I even read some names on the school rosters with birthplaces/hometowns that are not even in Pennsylvania. It’s weird because when you look at the Western Pennsylvania AAA school rosters, you don’t see where their hometowns are located…because (with the exception of only 2 schools—Cathedral Prep and Central Catholic), it’s already known where they live.

  15. "Doing it the best possible way" would be to keep track not just points and shutouts, for reasons I already explained. It would include hits, blocks, shots, turnovers, and take aways, etc. Maybe then we'd see players challenging themselves to play the whole game of hockey rather than cherry picking and trying to go coast to coast every time they get the puck? The best possible way isn't keeping track of 3 or 4 statistics.

  17. Maybe they should just all play for fun and not keep score! But then why even have PAHL? Just let all the kids play pickup at their home rinks! I just think if you are going to do something do it the best possible way. There will always be parents who complain about something. That's life! I admire the kids who play outside of PAHL and have their stats published!

  18. Yes, maybe MidAm could subsidize with their $5 million nest egg. Non-profits are NOT supposed to have those kinds of funds. It's not cheap.

  19. Last season you could see statistics on their website and I'm not sure many people even knew about it. You had to click a few different buttons on the site to get there. Even if they aren't 100% accurate I think it's cool for the kids to see how they stack up. Screw the parents who want to complain, they'll always have something to whine about.

  20. The scorekeeping is going to be inconsistent. It is dependent on largely untrained, parent volunteers serving as the scorekeeper. It is probably worse at the younger age groups where some of the parents, like the players, are new to the sport and the role. Everyone should be willing to accept this and know the stats are not the be all end all. Not posting the stats, however, does beg the question of why keep them at all? Why not just report the final scores and penalty minutes and move on? The answer lies in that the leauge does keep and use the stats. I suspect they are useful in making placement decisions in subsequent seasons. If the league is going to keep the stats, and use them internally, what is the real harm in publishing them? I've seen two theories put forth and address each below: 1.) Post-game parent complaints. The PAHL could adopt a rule/policy position along the final lines and post it on their site. "All scoring is final once signed by the appropriate officials and submitted to the league office. The PAHL will not hear any appeals regarding scoresheets....." 2.) Other teams leagues will use public scoring to poach/recruit. Who cares. It's a small community here and for the most part people know who is who. Frankly, the managers, coaches, and member organizations have the scoresheets and could use them for recruiting purposes already. Not publishing the scores is not the best way to govern recruiting issues.

  21. If the stats are published or not, parents and coaches already question scoring decisions. I still officiate games, and at the younger age groups I get questioned more about awarding secondary assists than I do about getting calls right in a lot of games. As far as shots goes, that has always been arbitrary even at the NHL level (I can remember the stories about the way NJ was legendary for some of the shot totals they came up with in the 2000's), so that will never be agreed upon. I disagree with the idea of giving out awards for scoring accomplishments because we already see players (and parents) who are ONLY concerned with how many goals their little player scores and that would only perpetuate selfish play. The bare minimum should be that the stats should be published and updated each week during the season. At the very least, this would provide a single source regardless if people are satisfied with the accuracy. People aren't always happy with the accuracy of the stats the NHL publishes, that's the cost of doing business.

  22. AWESOME! Truer words have never been spoken! Your whole text is right on the money! We need to keep this discussion alive and try to put pressure on the PAHL through the member organizations to change their dinosaur way of thinking. You would think that if enough members want stats and pressure them it will happen! PIHL uses the same platform, You can see stats all the way down to Middle school. Stats aren't hiding anyone from other organizations. They all know who the best players in PAHL AA are. If coaches want to poach them they already have all the info they need. Just a poor excuse from PAHL!

  23. Yes, that is one reason that I have also heard. The other main reason that have heard (as to why the gag order was implemented to ban statistical publication of the teams and players) was due to fear of parents becoming unruly and complaining about the inaccuracies in shots/saves, assists, goals, etc and the obvious omission from the parents’ expertise. All I know is that these things happen all over North American youth hockey. The successful leagues have a policy in place that addresses disputes in a timely and efficient manner. Either reason that is given as to why they don’t maintain public transparency with statistical data, are both based on the primary tenant of “fear.” Instead of the league awarding an individual trophy for most points, or most goals, or most assists by a forward and/or defenseman/defensewoman; they give out the “participation trophy” equivalency by removing evidence of their existence. Life is a competition. People keep score. Oftentimes, it validates one’s hard work, effort, and commitment to obtaining a team’s success through the individual effort of the 6-person unit at any one time on the ice.

  25. Top 5? Armstrong is the gold standard for homerism, and hearing the Armstrong faithful parents attempt to say it isn’t so is comic relief.

  26. Armstrong would easily be in the top 5.

  27. Imagine if you could see the actual scoresheets. It would substantiate the rinks where the visiting teams routinely and blatantly get homered.

  28. PAHL wants to charge the money and do the least work possible. Basically they run an organized in-house league that travels to play. I can see it getting to where they're being challenged with a competitor now and will probably end up rolling over and giving up as they continue to lose players and teams. However, I'll add that the AHF/THF groups on Facebook have an awful lot of complaining about "my kid faced 60 shots but the scoresheet only said 58", "they totally missed my kid's secondary assists 3 time this weekend", or any different incarnations of that you can think of. So I can see where PAHL doesn't want hounded week in and week out with those kind of complaints.

  29. Sure would be nice to see the score sheets and have the PAHL name an all tournament team!

  30. Wouldn't it be nice if the PAHL had a social media presence and actually did more to recognize the players in their league! You would have the best of both leagues here at home!

With parity showcases All-Stars and Championships the AHF offers a complete experience for our members. Taken from the AHF website! Wouldn't it be nice if the PAHL could do just some of this!

  34. well aren't you just a ray of sunshine. I did some research : The Colonials got off to their best start in program history in 2021 at 11-3 and saw themselves ranked within the USCHO Top 20 for much of the season, reaching a program-best #17 in January. At 15-9 overall and 10-5-0 in AHA play, the Colonials earned a West Division title while boasting the AHA Coach of the Year as well as conference MVP, Rookie of the Year, and Defenseman of the Year. The top offensive team in AHA and one of the most prolific in all of college hockey, RMU's 85 goals was one of the highest totals in all of NCAA DI, and their 25% success rate on the power-play was tops in the conference. - this happens to be the SAME year the program was ended by the President. Schooley's team has reached four AHA title games and raised three championship banners since the start of the decade. After making the program's first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament via an AHA postseason title in 2013-14, the Colonials ruled the league during the grueling regular season in 2014-15 and 2015-16, winning 24 games in each of those years. Additionally - several players from RMU have gone on to play professional hockey on some level. Then let's talk about the women's program - 4 women played in the Olympics - 2 earning medals. 3 banners for winning CHA and several women drafted into Professional Women's hockey.

  35. If I am not mistaken, one of the things that RMU doesn't like about the Island facility is that it is off campus, and therefore not as easy for resident students to attend games at. This was one of the stated advantages that the on campus basketball arena had over the hockey arena. So I assume they hope they'll get more spectators at an on campus arena.

  36. The statement in the Trib explicitly says the following, "The 100,000-square-foot development also would house enhanced training and locker room facilities, offices, plus regional amenities to meet the needs of youth and amateur hockey players." As soon as this building would open, I would think Black Bear would be waiting with their checkbook. If I remember correctly they had, at some point, made an offer or had reached out about the current rink during the controversy when the Men's and Women's teams were dissolved.

  37. HAHA, try to find some stats! Especially in the PAHL. Kids nominated by Coaches! Teams can make up whatever stats they want for independent team players! MidAm tryouts a total joke! Coaches kids nominated most often!

  38. I’m sure Black Bear would be very quick to buy the facility and keep it operational.
