Well, it appears they realized there was another revenue stream to squeeze.

I can't speak about whether their service is any good, but I'll say this: out east they own everything and maybe this isn't an issue, but what this means for us locally is that if you are a team whose home rink is a BB rink, you'll have to have both LiveBarn and BBTV if the grandparents want to watch the games, or if, like me, you normally download all the games for review.

Or if your kid doesn't play for a Black Bear team, but plays a game in one of their rinks via PIHL or PAHL or tournament, etc.

That said, I'm sure it's more up to date than livebarn, and they are marketing all the bells and whistles that'll be at your fingertips to get your kid a chance at the NHL...

The only upside I see is that livebarn will need to step up it's game. But you'll still be missing games or paying for 2 services.

I wonder what this means for the parents who set up their own livestreams? Probably will be told they aren't allowed to film.

There was a thread about this on the AHF Youth Hockey parents group uncensored on facebook.  The news started breaking at an AHF managers meeting a month or so ago.  I am not involved with an AHF team and was not present at any of the meetings but followed the treads out of curiosity.  According to some of the posts, if you put much weight in a facebook post, is that there is a rule (quoted below).

**************

11.0 Streaming and/or Recording of Games

It is illegal to video any games in the AHF.  If a player, parent, family member or friend product (or any other version of such) a video or livestream or any other broadcast production of an AHF even or game, the player can be immediately suspended or dismissed from the team, league, tournament for the remainder of the season with no refunds provided.

*************

Apparently there will be a $50/athlete fee for AHF teams this season for the video service.

The comments were generally upset with the fee, wording of the rule, and threats of expulsion.

Wow, that sounds pretty harsh and over reaching. I'd almost want to blatantly film as a visiting team with a player just playing there, and no affiliation to BB. Can't suspend your kid if he has nothing to do with BB.

And I think that 50 dollar fee is just another fee, nothing to do with the video.

I think that only applies to AHF league games which they control all the teams since they run the league.  Im guessing they have no control over the PAHL teams or PAHL games.

If it was $50 to access the video for the whole season, I wouldn't have a major issue with that. I doubt that is the case though.

Technically, rinks with LiveBarn aren't supposed to let spectators stream although no one enforces it. Is the poor kid at the counter really going to walk through the stands and stop people from recording? The reason I know this is that during COVID restrictions, when there wasn't a lot of spectators allowed in some rinks, I asked the rink for permission for a student to go in and record the game so those who couldn't attend could watch. At that time, the rink was only allowing one parent per kid to enter. Anyways, the rink manager sent me their contract with LiveBarn showing that they were supposed to prevent anyone from filming the game and spectators should be told to use LiveBarn instead.

As I said, no one enforces it in LiveBarn rinks - it just came up because we tried to be proactive and ask permission (mistake). BB will probably be a lot more stringent about these types of bans though, I would guess.

$50 a season? Hell I’d gladly pay $50 a month if the quality is better than LiveBarn.
LiveBarn camera quality is atrocious and until now they have had a monopoly on the market.
Not saying BBTV is the best thing to happen but I don’t hate it, IF the quality is significantly better.

I am however, very appreciative of the guys who stream the games for my kids teams. 1080p live on youtube is awesome when I can’t be there in person.

Great. Another streaming service to add on to the ever increasing  number of apps and viewing platforms that I already pay out the nose for. What’s one more little, tiny, minuscule, hardly noticeable automatic recurring charge gonna do?

BB is quickly moving down my personal scale of organizations who negatively impact my finances and lifestyle unnecessarily.

I guess the cutover has happened.   Black Bear rinks in the area are showing as VOD Only on LiveBarn.   Anyone have the BBTV yet to comment on how it compares?  Interested in getting it if it's a dramatic improvement.

Nothing on Black BearTV site!  Big tournament this weekend in Pittsburgh at those rinks.  Hope they don't mess it up!

From what I can tell, they seem to turn it on and off based on who is playing.  PAHL teams, it is on, AHF/THF games it is off. That is on a very small sample size though.

Is Frozen Pond doing the same if its Yetis or a high schools vs. an Icemen game?  Its not a Black Bear rink, but the Icemen play in AHF/THF.

Looks like Frozen Pond is still Livebarn...  i think it's only BlackBear owned rinks.   For example, cfsBank Event Center (Mon Valley) is VOD only.   Seems like it's 4 in Western PA.   Do a search on "VOD only" and 77 rinks are listed.

$2,600 for a 4 game showcase with no rules posted yet.  For that price, I'd expect ice cuts every period.

The prices of tournaments have gotten outrageous over the past 4-5 years

Yes absolutely ridiculous especially since it is such a mixed bag of teams.
